Book excerpt: This report is a review of selected references dealing with descriptions and possible causes of damage to laser component elements functioning under high-power conditions, or to potential laser component materials exposed to high-power laser beams. Discussed are internal and surface damage, conditions prevailing in materials under lasing conditions, and the mechanisms proposed to account for the accumulation of sufficient energy for damage to take place; that is, self-focusing, stimulated Brillouin scattering, multiphoton absorption, and microplasma generation. Fifty-seven papers, published in 1964 - 1966, are included in the references.

Book Advances in Nd YAG Laser Surgery

Download or read book Advances in Nd YAG Laser Surgery written by Stephen N. Joffe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nd:YAG laser has finally become the multidisciplinary and muitispeciaity tool of the 1980s. Primarily developed for gastrointestinal applications for controlling bleeding, at present it is also used for endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, endobronchial cancer, and bladder and gynecological lesions and finding applications in otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery. De velopment of laser scalpels and focusing head-pieces has now allowed the Nd:YAG laser to be used for open surgical procedures in general and plastic surgery, head and neck surgery, urology, gynecology, dermatology, and neu rosurgery. The rapid development in ceramic technology has led to contact surgery allowing physicians a choice of excision, vaporization, coagulation, incision, or combinations thereof by easily changing probes rather than having to select new laser wavelengths. This technology is rapidly replacing the carbon dioxide laser which currently has no adequate flexible waveguide for fiberoptic en doscopy, cannot be used in a water medium (e.g., bladder), and has poor coagulation properties when compared to the Nd:YAG laser. Future developments may see the Nd:YAG laser even replacing electro cautery in the operating room due to its greater safety and efficacy. Local hyperthermia (laserthermia) with computer control, photodynamic therapy, and ophthalmic applications make the Nd:YAG laser the most exciting tech nological advancement in medicine and surgery for the 1980s.

His medical education started in 1927 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm During his study he worked parttime in the department of physiology. KARPE served as a resident in the ophthalmological department of Serafiner lasarettet from 1937 till 1941. That year, the university eye clinic was transferred to the newly built Karolinska Sjukhuset, where KARPE became assistant-head of the out-patient department, and lecturer in ophthalmology. In 1949 he was appoin ted professor in ophthalmology at the Karolinska Institute and head of the department of ophthalmology at Karolinska Sjukhuset. KARPE received his doctor degree in 1945 upon completion of his thesis: 'The basis of clinical electroretinography'. This original work opened up a completely new field of clinical investigation. Soon Swedish and foreign pupils flocked into his department to study his new method, a technique at present accepted as an indispensable tool in ophthalmic practice. Since 1945 his work as well as that of his pupils have been devoted mainly to this field of research.

Book Lasers in Medicine

Download or read book Lasers in Medicine written by Gregory T. Absten and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers were developed out of Einstein's theories, but the first work ing device was not produced until 1960. Since then, they have found applications in many areas of medicine, and hold promise for many more. This book has been written to provide a basic found ation on lasers - what they are, how they work, and what they can do for the patient. It assumes only a basic scientific background in the reader, and has many simple and clear diagrams. It should be of interest to clinicians, surgeons, nurses, safety officers, patients and interested laymen. The book consists of six chapters, and following a glossary of technical terms, begins with a brief discussion of the physics behind laser action. This section is illustrated with clear diagrams, and is written in an easy-to-follow style. It describes how laser light originates, and how it differs fundamentally from ordinary light. The remainder of the book is concerned with the use of lasers in medicine. Chapter 2 deals with the various ways in which a laser beam can interact with tissue, and shows how this depends on the particular laser being used. The following chapter describes some properties of those lasers which are most usually used in current medical practice, but also discusses new and experimental develop ments. There are various methods of getting the laser beam to the target tissue, and these are described in Chapter 4.
