Download or read book Fiat Flux written by William D. Lindsey and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson R. Bachelor was a Tennessee native who moved with his family to Franklin County, Arkansas, in 1870. A country doctor and natural philosopher, Bachelor was impelled to chronicle his life from 1870 to 1902, documenting the family's move to Arkansas, their settling a farm in Franklin County, and Bachelor's medical practice. Bachelor was an avid reader with wide-ranging interests in literature, science, nature, politics, and religion, and he became a self-professed freethinker in the 1870s. He was driven by a concept he called "fiat flux," an awareness of the "rapid flight of time" that motivated him to treat the people around him and the world itself as precious and fleeting. He wrote occasional pieces for a local newspaper, bringing his unusually enlightened perspectives to the subjects of women's rights, capital punishment, the role of religion in politics, and the domination of the American political system by economic elite in the 1890s. These essays, along with family letters and the original diary entries, are included here for an uncommon glimpse into the life of a country doctor in nineteenth-century Arkansas.
Download or read book Brief Abstract of Lower Norfolk County and Norfolk County Wills 1637 written by Charles Fleming McIntosh and published by . This book was released on 1914 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About four or five years ago, the Abstractor of these wills was employed to examine the titles to a large number of timber tracts, situated in Norfolk County, and to carry the same back to the original grants. The first obstacle he found in his way was the lack of an Index, for the years 1637 to 1753, and it was, therefore, necessary to index deeds and wills for that period. This index required the reading, page by page, of the first nineteen volumes in the Norfolk County Clerk's Office, and formed the basis upon which the present work was made. In using this Abstract, it is well to bear in mind the brief development of Norfolk County: Norfolk County was originally a part of Elizabeth City County, formed in 1634. About 1636 that portion of Elizabeth City County, lying on the south side of the James River, was formed into New Norfolk County. About 1637 New Norfolk County was divided into Upper Norfolk and Lower Norfolk Counties; Upper Norfolk County later became Nansemond County, and in 1691 Lower Norfolk was divided into Princess Anne County and Norfolk County. -- Preface.
Download or read book History of Perquimans County written by Ellen Goode Rawlings Winslow and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1974 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a county history that is extraordinarily rich in primary source materials, including abstracts of deeds from 1681 through the Revolutionary War period and, moreover, petitions, divisions of estates, wills, and marriages found in the records of Perquimans and adjacent North Carolina counties. Numbering in the tens of thousands, the records provide the names of all principal parties and related family members, places of residence and migration, descriptions of real and personal property, dates, boundary surveys, names of executors, witnesses, and appraisers, and dates of recording. Altogether, the index contains references to about 35,000 persons! Researchers should note that Perquimans was one of the original North Carolina precincts--with very close ties to the southeastern Virginia counties of Norfolk, Princess Anne, Nansemond, and Isle of Wight--and for many years had fluid boundaries with the North Carolina counties of Chowan, Gates, and Pasquotank.
