Book South Carolina Deed Abstracts 1740 1755 Volume 2

Download or read book South Carolina Deed Abstracts 1740 1755 Volume 2 written by Clara A. Langley and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Clara B. Langley, Pub. 1984, reprinted 416 pages, Soft Cover, Index, ISBN #0-89308-272-4. These four volumes contain the abstracts of the records of the Register of the Province of South Carolina from 1719-1772. These abstracts of conveyances and deeds, and occasionally miscellaneous records, cover all parts of the state, from the Proprietary period until just prior to the Revolution. The original copies remain in Charleston in the Office of the Register of Mesne Conveyance, where all deeds for the entire state were recorded until the state capital was moved to Columbia well after the Revolution. After 1785, the individual counties in South Carolina began recording their own deeds, but prior to this date, one must look for his or her ancestor's deed in these volumes being abstracted. These abstracts were prepared for the Works Progress Administration by Miss. Langley in the 1930's. They have been thoroughly indexed for grantors, grantees, adjacent property owners and all other individuals whose names appeared in such conveyances. Each volume contains a full-name index of individuals; a place name index of all places such as rivers, plantations, towns, countries; as well as an occupation index.

Book The Furniture of John Shearer 1790 1820

Download or read book The Furniture of John Shearer 1790 1820 written by Elizabeth A. Davison and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2011-01-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a full-color catalogue raisonne interprets the distinctive furniture made by John Shearer, one of the most accomplished and intriguing furniture makers during the post-Revolutionary period. Shearer emigrated from Scotland in the late 18th century and retained loyalist sympathies throughout his life, evidenced by the imagery and inscriptions sympathetic to various British causes_such as the suppression of the Irish rebellion in 1798 and the British victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805_that he worked into his furniture. Davison provides insight into the furniture's appeal to Anglo-American patrons, not secret loyalists, but men still culturally tied to Great Britain. Shearer's pieces are scattered among various collections, and many of them have been identified only in the last 25 years. This catalog is the only work in which all of Shearer's known pieces of furniture are presented in a single volume.

Book Uzal Johnson Loyalist Surgeon

Download or read book Uzal Johnson Loyalist Surgeon written by Uzal Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original diary of Dr. Uzal Johnson, surgeon to the command of Major Patrick Ferguson, has been housed for years at Princeton University, rarely seen by historians. Now, for the first time, the diary has been edited and published for scholars and the general public. In 1780, Johnson was chosen by Ferguson to become the surgeon of the American Volunteers, a Provincial Loyalist unit. The diary details Johnson's service and experiences in the Carolinas from 5 March 1780 to 7 March 1781. Johnson's diary makes it possible to trace the exact route of Ferguson from his entry into South Carolina to his death in the battle of Kings Mountain. Johnson gives details about that battle never before revealed. In addition, Johnson provides a rare look at the military events from the viewpoint of a royal subject. His experiences provide facts and impressions which increases the understanding of the war in the Carolinas. The material used in editing his diary is taken from primary British and American records never before printed. Maps, illustrations; Paper $24.95; Hard $34.95 plus $3.50 media mail, $4.00 priority mail.
