Book excerpt: "A SKILLFUL BLEND OF CHARACTER, PHILOSOPHY AND NARRATIVE. . .Formidable personalities embroil themselves in ruthless power struggles that would make a corporate raider blush." --The Washington Post Book World It is 1965, and Charles Ashworth has attained the plum position of bishop of Starbridge, an honor that keeps him in a heady whirl of activity that would exhaust the most seasoned corporate executive. With the invaluable support of his minions and his attractive, unsinkable wife, Ashworth stands against the amorality and decadence of the age--"Anti-Sex Ashworth." He slays his opponents by being a tough, efficient, confident churchman, the torments of his past long since dead and buried. And then the unexpected, the unthinkable, strikes. Suddenly Ashworth finds himself staring into the chasm of all the lies hes been telling himself for years: about his marriage, his children, even his views on the Church. And as he suspects his old nemesis and dean, Neville Aysgarth, of drinking too much, of financial chicanery, of--God forbid--having an affair, Ashworth discovers to his horror that he is tempted to commit the very acts that he has so publicly denounced. . . . "ENTHRALLING. . .Rich, dense, almost indecently entertaining." --San Jose Mercury News "POWERFUL. . .MIRACULOUS." --Booklist (starred review) SELECTED BY THE BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB

Book excerpt: Doctors' Wives' Disease is not an imaginary ailment. For, in the closed, inbred society of a great medical center, these women, the wives of superbly successful physicians, are driven by loneliness, boredom, and frustration along forbidden pathways. And alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity become their alternatives to despair. A radio bulletin tears the camouflage from the apparent prosperous tranquility of the community: "A prominent Weston physician has just shot and killed his wife. A man, with the victim at the time and identified only as another doctor, was also seriously wounded." Five doctors' wives hear the announcement, and each one of them comes with despair and terror to realize that her husband, himself, just might be involved in the scandal—either as philanderer or killer. Where has trust gone? And where is love? Beneath this scandalous and passionate picture of human weakness, is a tale, perhaps even more striking: and that is Dr. Slaughter's brilliant, minute, expert's picture of the urgent business of an ultramodern hospital. His descriptions—in fascinating detail—of a heart operation and a brain operation, are breathtakingly suspenseful, and based on the most advanced medical and surgical knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name Josh McDowell promises real-life, on-the-street Christian apologetics. In his first Harvest House book, Josh joins his son Sean to draw on his life’s work and comprehensively address a vital issue: why an entire generation of young Christians—and millions of older believers—is confused about what they believe, why they believe it, and how it’s relevant. The Unshakable Truth is uniquely positioned for younger Christians because it presents apologetics relationally, focusing on how Christianity’s doctrines affect relationships. The authors... ground every assertion in the overarching story of creation, incarnation, and re-creation. distill 12 crucial “faith statements”—for example, “A personal Creator God exists.” explain why each statement is trustworthy, how it applies to real life, and—using examples, stories, and experiences—what its relevance is. A spiritual gold mine for parents, youth workers, pastors—anyone wanting to reveal Christianity’s relevance to today’s life and culture.

Book Absolute Truth for a Relative World

Download or read book Absolute Truth for a Relative World written by Dennis Dinger and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult these days to hear or read and decide what is true and what is false. It seems like there are a lot of lies and deceptions floating about. Some are lies. Mostly, rather, people are telling the "truth" as they perceive it - ""relative truth."" So as Pilate asked Jesus, "What is truth?" Where does one go in the 21st Century to discern truth from falsehood? The answer is "to the Bible." God speaks in absolutes - always has - always will. The answers to most of mankind's questions can be found in the Word of God. This book is a study of truth as it appears in the Bible. It behooves mankind, especially Christians, to familiarize themselves with the Word of God. Otherwise, they can be blown about, tossed, and scattered, like fall's leaves dancing to every little breeze. We all want to be well-grounded, solid individuals. Knowing God, and the truths of His Word, can produce that result. This book should provide many answers - especially, the one to Pilate's question.

Book Saving Truth

  • Author : Abdu Murray
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2018-05-08
  • ISBN : 0310562058
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Saving Truth written by Abdu Murray and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, Western culture embraces confusion as a virtue and decries certainty as a sin. Those who are confused about sexuality and identity are viewed as heroes. Those who are confused about morality are progressive pioneers. Those who are confused about spirituality are praised as tolerant. Conversely, those who express certainty about any of these issues are seen as bigoted, oppressive, arrogant, or intolerant. This cultural phenomenon led the compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary to name "post-truth" their word of the year in 2016. How can Christians offer truth and clarity to a world that shuns both? By accurately describing the Culture of Confusion and how it has affected our society, author Abdu Murray seeks to awaken Westerners to the plight we find ourselves in. He also challenges Christians to consider how they have played a part in fostering the Culture of Confusion through bad arguments, unwise labeling, and emotional attacks. Ultimately, Saving Truth provides arguments from a Christian perspective for the foundations of truth and how those foundations apply to sexuality, identity, morality, and spirituality. For those enmeshed in the culture of confusion, the book offers a way to untangle oneself and find hope in the clarity that Christ offers.

Download or read book Burden of Proof Using Known Concepts to Reveal Eternal Truths written by Brandon Russell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is the proof? Why believe in something if there is no evidence? Also, why believe in something when there is evidence that runs contrary to a particular belief? This is basic logic and a reason why most deny a deity. Most who deny a deity argue there is no evidence. Also they point to scientific evidence to validate their skepticism. However, what if there is evidence and evidence that is overwhelming? Those who deny a deity have every right to demand evidence. Yet, what will they do when they are provided proof? The Bible advocates a God who is sovereign. If this is true everything points to his existence.God is not hiding, he wants to be known. BURDEN OF PROOF: Using Known Concepts to Reveal Eternal Truths, was written to identify the evidence of God's existence. The author answers forty thought-provoking questions that highlight the eternal truths of Scripture. Thus proving that the burden of proof does not lie with those who believe in God but with those who don't.

Book excerpt: The human race as a whole is under spiritual siege and constant attack from an enemy that keeps himself well disguised. This volume is presented to help humanity see and recognize the destructive devices of this enemy. When this book was first conceived, the idea was to alert those who were unaware of the reality of God, the creator of mankind, to the very real danger that they faced by not having an awareness of God or a relationship with Him. As the writing progressed, I realized that most of humanity is unaware of many of the devices being used for their destruction. It has been said that knowledge is the first step to avoiding problems. Reliable knowledge is truly one of our greatest weapons against the enemy who desires our demise. What have you heard about Truth? Has someone told you that truth is only a relative concept? Have there been questions in your mind regarding things proclaimed as truth? In this book Absolute Truth, author J.D. Richardson delves into these questions and sites authoritative, historical, and rational answers that will dispel the mystery and darkness surrounding the concepts and ideas of definite and absolute truth.

Book 77 Truths about Jesus Revealed in Quran

Download or read book 77 Truths about Jesus Revealed in Quran written by Jegan Fernando, MD and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book was interested in learning the four major religions of the world—Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. As a result of five years of intensive study of all the holy books, he came up with three books with the following titles: 1000 Similarities and 100 Differences between the Holy Bible and Holy Quran This will reveal the major doctrinal sameness and differences between these two religions. 700 Amazing Similarities and Differences between Bhagavad-Gita and Bible This will explain the verses of the Hindu holy book, comparing it with the Holy Bible. Word of Truth of Dhammapada and Way of Truth through Bible This book explains the 423 verses of Buddhist holy book, comparing them with that of the Holy Bible. These books were written in a simpler manner without making any changes on the original wordings for the people to easily read, understand, and explore. These books will eliminate the doubts, question, and false assumptions among these religions so that each reader will gain a sound understanding of the teachings of these four major religions of the world. Among these four religions, in my view, Christianity and Islam appear to be very close to each other. Surprisingly, the name of Jesus is mentioned in the book of Quran at least seventy-seven times. Hence, the author wants to separate this significant finding to explain further to those readers who are interested to know what the Quran reveals about the Christian prophet, Jesus. 77 Truths about Jesus Revealed in Quran! They are very interesting to read, understand, and to teach others with authenticity. These four books are very valuable tools for pastors, religious teachers, professors of religious studies, priests, Sunday schoolers, group sessions, and missionary workers. They will gain ample knowledge about the religions of those people with whom they are working with.

Book Ambiguity and the Absolute

Download or read book Ambiguity and the Absolute written by Frank Chouraqui and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Nietzsche and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Chouraqui argues, are linked by how they conceive the question of truth. Although both thinkers criticize the traditional concept of truth as objectivity, they both find that rejecting it does not solve the problem. What is it in our natural existence that gave rise to the notion of truth? The answer to that question is threefold. First, Nietzsche and Merleau-Ponty both propose a genealogy of “truth” in which to exist means to make implicit truth claims. Second, both seek to recover the preobjective ground from which truth as an erroneous concept arose. Finally, this attempt at recovery leads both thinkers to ontological considerations regarding how we must conceive of a being whose structure allows for the existence of the belief in truth. In conclusion, Chouraqui suggests that both thinkers’ investigations of the question of truth lead them to conceive of being as the process of self-falsification by which indeterminate being presents itself as determinate.
