Having always done what is expected of her, Mila dresses the part, only dates college boys with exemplary backgrounds, and doesn't ask questions. Not about her papa's absences or his refusal to let her set foot in her birthplace--Russia. Suffocated by the rules and unanswered questions, Mila does what she's always wanted to. She boards a plane to Moscow. She never expected to fall for a man on the way. One with unexplained wealth, tattoos on his hands, and secrets in his eyes. But it doesn't take long for his caress to become a rough grasp muffling her screams. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Unfortunately, a Russian winter is the coldest of them all, and Mila soon learns the only way to escape intact is to do the impossible and thaw her captor's heart.

Book excerpt: Pastor and author J. D. Greear reveals that the secret to a robust, passionate faith isn't getting all the right answers about God, but seeing God as the awesome, glorious, and infinite presence that He is. We like God small. We prefer a God who is safe, domesticated, who thinks like we think, likes what we like, and whom we can manage, predict, and control. A small God is convenient. Practical. Manageable. For us, thinking of God as so infinitely greater and wiser than we are and who would cause us to tremble in his presence is a leftover relic from an oppressive, archaic view of religion. But what if this small version of God we've created is holding us back from the greatest experience of our lives--from genuine, confident, world-transforming faith? In Not God Enough, J.D. reveals how to discover a God who: is big enough to handle your questions, doubts, and fears is not silent is worthy of worship wants to take you from boring to bold in your faith has a purpose and mission for you on earth is pursuing you right now The truth: God is big. Bigger than big. Bigger than all the words we use to say big. Only a God of infinite power, wisdom, and majesty can answer our deepest questions and meet our deepest longings. God is not just a slightly better, slightly smarter version of you. God is infinite and glorious, and an encounter with Him won't just change the way you think about your faith. It'll change your entire life.

Book Struggling with God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Simon D Podmore
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company
  • Release : 2013-10-31
  • ISBN : 0227902114
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Struggling with God written by Simon D Podmore and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invoking the biblical motif of Jacob's struggle with the Face of God (Genesis 32), Simon D. Podmore undertakes a constructive theological account of 'spiritual trial' (tentatio; known in German mystical and Lutheran tradition as Anfechtung) in relation to enduring questions of the otherness and hiddenness of God and the self, the problem of suffering and evil, the freedom of Spirit, and the anxious relationship between temptation and ordeal, fear and desire. This book traces a genealogy of spiritual trial from medieval German mystical theology, through Lutheran and Pietistic thought (Tauler; Luther; Arndt; Boehme), and reconstructs Kierkegaard's innovative yet under-examined recovery of the category (AnfAegtelse: a Danish cognate for Anfechtung) within the modern context of the 'spiritless' decline of Christendom. Developing the relationship between struggle (Anfechtung) and release (Gelassenheit), Podmore proposes a Kierkegaardian theology of spiritual trial which elaborates the kenosis of the self before God in terms of Spirit's restless longing to rest transparently in God. Offering an original rehabilitation of the temptation of spiritual trial, this book strives for a renewed theological hermeneutic which speaks to the enduring human struggle to realise the unchanging love of God in the face of spiritual darkness.

Book Salvation Through Temptation

Download or read book Salvation Through Temptation written by Benjamin E. Heidgerken and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021-06-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvation through Temptation describes the development of predominant Greek and Latin Christian conceptions of temptation and of the work of Christ to heal and restore humankind in the context of that temptation, focusing on Maximus the Confessor and Thomas Aquinas as well-developed examples of Greek and Latin thought on these matters. Maximus and Thomas represent two trajectories concerning the woundedness of human emotionality in the wake of the primordial human sin. Heidgerken argues that Maximus stands in essential continuity with earlier Greek ascetic theology, which conceives of the weakness of fallen humankind in demonological categories, so that the Pauline law of sin is bound to external demonic agents that act upon the human mind through thoughts, desires, and sensory impressions. For Thomas, on the other hand, this wound consists primarily of an internal disordering of the faculties that results from the withdrawal of original grace: concupiscence or the fomes peccati. Yet even in this framework, the devil plays a significant role in Thomas’s account of postlapsarian temptation. On the basis of these differing frameworks for human temptation, Heidgerken demonstrates the centrality of Christ’s exemplarity in the Greek account and the centrality of Christ’s moral perfections in the Latin account. As a consequence of these emphases, the Greek tradition of Maximus places distinct limits on the ability of human emotionality (even that of Christ) to be perfected in this life, whereas Thomas’s approach allows Christ to completely embody a perfected form of human emotionality in his earthly life. Reciprocally, Thomas’s account of Christ’s moral perfections and virtue places distinct limits on his affirmation of Christ’s experience of postlapsarian temptation, whereas Maximus’s account allows for Christ to experience interior forms of temptation that more closely mirror the concrete moral experiences and circumstances of fallen human beings. Salvation through Temptation recommends a retrieval of early ascetic theology and demonology as the best contemporary systematic and ecumenically-viable approach to Christ’s temptation and victory over the devil.

From there you are swept into the Garden where you overhear Adam and Eve casually chatting about daily living, told as only Elmer L. Towns can tell. The personal experiences and Bible stories he brings to life in Temptation Overcomers are not only captivating but thought, heart, and spirit-provoking. For example, he writes, "Look at temptation from a non-moral or non-spiritual perspective. A sign on the street corner says, “No right turn." But you do it anyway...there’s no oncoming traffic. You didn’t get a ticket or a warning from the police. Did you sin, or did you just find a convenient way to get where you were going? Was turning right wrong? We are all tempted in non-moral ways every day when dealing with manmade rules—sometimes there are consequences, and other times no one cares. But what about God’s moral laws?” Temptation Overcomers overflows with ways you can claim daily triumph with 4 chapters of wisdom, 14 principles for victory-living, 28 daily devotions, and 4 comprehensive lessons that cement not only your new-found strategies but provide ways to teach others as well.

Book The Temptation of Non Being

  • Author : Artemy Magun
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

Download or read book The Temptation of Non Being written by Artemy Magun and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we enjoy artworks that depict disasters and suffering? Is this a hangover from the Modernist impulse to break the rules of harmony? Is there actually a proper way to perform negativity in art without resorting to nihilism? The Temptation of Non-Being uses these fundamental questions to paint a picture of contemporary art as beset by an outbreak of the negative, and to construct a new theory of art as a medium of complex negativity. The negative in art is explained not as a simple negation or destruction, but as a multifaceted, polymorphous structure with a vast range of strategies and techniques from parody and pastiche to defamiliarization and non-resemblance. Charting the depth of these negative practices, Artemy Magun shows how they become progressively more complex and explicit, illustrating them with interdisciplinary examples from Lars von Trier, Jacek Malczewski, Andrei Platonov and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. At the heart of this layered, nested structure lies an understanding of Modern aesthetics that helps to answer even more questions: how can the testing, probing nature of art lead to this preoccupation with the negative? Why does this negativity emerge in the first place? What can it tell us about art itself and how it functions in society? This is an erudite and provocative analysis that enriches the ongoing evaluation of both 'high' and 'low' art.

If they offend me, then I'll kill them all!" She said, I want to earn a lot of silver, and then walk all over the five kingdoms, the short paper slant, drunk the sky! Her red clothes were rippling, and she had peerless grace and grace. Her exquisite makeup was something that no one could match, and her awe-inspiring presence was incomparable. Her name was Shui Qingyan. She had put on her wedding dress three times, but had left the wedding hall three times in her wedding dress. He was forced into a dead end again and again, and then he was saved again and again. With a flip of his hand, he turned the entire world into a chessboard, trapping her at the same time. At the same time, he also tricked her into hiding himself within the eighteen strongholds, his red clothes rippling like a red lotus, planning on taking the entire world into his arms for fifteen years, but he lost himself because of her. He was an assistant of the National Medical Bureau for eight years. He was a talented young man, handsome, arrogant and unruly. He hid his thoughts in his heart and devoted his life to her without any regrets. In matters of love, who was in the right and who was in the wrong? Who could be sure? The maelstrom of power, to put it bluntly, was neither victorious nor victorious.
