Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absolute Relations of Time and Space At the meeting of the British Association in 1902, Lord Rayleigh gave a paper entitled "Does motion through the ether cause double refraction?" in which he described some experiments which seemed to indicate that the answer was in the negative. I recollect that on this occasion Professor Larmor was asked whether he would expect any such effect and he replied that he did not expect any. In the discussion which followed reference was made to the null results of all attempts to detect uniform motion through the ether and to the way in which things seemed to conspire together to give these null results. The impression made on me by this discussion was: that in order properly to understand what happened, it would be necessary to be quite clear as to what we mean by equality of lengths, etc., and I decided that I should try at some future time to carry out an analysis of this subject. I am not certain that I had not some idea of doing this even before the British Association meeting, but in any case, the inspiration came from Sir Joseph Larmor, either at this meeting or on some previous occasion while attending his lectures. Some years later I proceeded to try to carry out this idea, and while-engaged in endeavouring to solve the problem, I heard for the first time of Einstein's work. From the first I felt that Einstein's standpoint and method of treatment were unsatisfactory, though his mathematical transformations might be sound enough, and I decided to proceed in my own way in search of a suitable basis for a theory. In particular I felt strongly repelled by the idea that events could be simultaneous to one person and not simultaneous to another; which was one of Einstein's chief contentions. This seemed to destroy all sense of the reality of the external world and to leave the physical universe no better than a dream, or rather, a nightmare. Book excerpt: In my smaller book, "The Absolute Relations of Time and Space," I gave an abbreviated account of this work and added an appendix showing how the various complicated geometries which are treated of in Einstein's generalized relativity could be obtained by means of a modified measure of interval. However, most relativists have been too busily engaged in praising Einstein to spare the time to go into my work. One result of this has been that, by taking the idea of measurement as the fundamental thing, a very large number, if not the majority, of relativists have fallen into the very serious error of asserting that the length of what they call a "world-line " is a minimum between any two points of it. In my "Theory of Time and Space "I showed (p. 360) that this is not correct. Finding that a number of writers were making this mistake, I wrote a letter which appeared in Nature (February 5, 1920, p. 599) in which I invited attention to this matter and pointed out that in what I called "inertia lines '' the length, so far from being a minimum, was actually a maximum in the mathematical sense; while, in what I called "separation lines" the length was neither a maximum nor a minimum. In this letter I gave actual numerical examples to illustrate these points. I invited attention to the matter again in my "Absolute Relations of Time and Space" (p. 71), published in 1920. In spite of these efforts of mine, I again find this blunder cropping up in works published this year. Now it seems to me that it is a very important point since, in ordinary geometry, there is no such thing as a "longest" line joining two points. The idea would, I think, be apt to cause bewilderment in the mind of a person meeting it for the first time, unless it were properly presented to him. The idea of a "straight line" which was neither a maximum nor a minimum would, I fancy, cause even greater bewilderment, and he would wish to know how such lines were to be defined. In Einstein's generalized relativity, the element of interval is taken as a starting-point, although the idea of an interval in the minds of many writers is so obscure that they ascribe a minimum property to it which it does not possess. Although I have tried so often to impress on relativists that the ordinary method of treating space-time theory is unsatisfactory, I propose to make one more attempt to show that the measurement of intervals is not the simple thing that is so often supposed. Let us consider the simple time-space theory in which the length of an element ds of what I call a "separation line" is given by the formula: ds2 = dx2 + dy2 + dz2 - dt2. Let O be the origin of co-ordinates and let P be any point on the axis of x, at a distance l from O, measured, say, in the positive direction. Let F(x) be any arbitrary differentiable function of x which is continuous and single valued, and which is equal to zero for x = O and for x = l. Now consider the space-time curve the equations of which are: y = t = F(x), 2 = O. It is evident that this curve passes through O and P. But now we have dy=dt, dz=o ds2=dx2 and so on.Thus we have ds=dx, so the length measured along the space-time curve from O to P is equal to the length of O to P measured directly along the axis of x. That is, it i equal to l. Thus a space-time curve the equation of which contain an arbitrary function can have the same length between two points as the direct length measured between those two points. -Nature, Volume 110 [1922]

In the mid-seventeenth century, a new kind of answer emerged: time or eternal duration is 'absolute', in the sense that it is independent of human minds and material bodies. Emily Thomas explores the development of absolute time or eternal duration during one of Britain's richest and most creative metaphysical periods, from the 1640s to the 1730s. She introduces an interconnected set of main characters - Henry More, Walter Charleton, Isaac Barrow, Isaac Newton, John Locke, Samuel Clarke, and John Jackson - alongside a large and varied supporting cast, whose metaphysical views are all read in their historical context and given a place in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century development of thought about time. In addition to interpreting the metaphysics of these thinkers, Absolute Time advances two general, developmental theses. Book excerpt: An intermittent but mentally quite disabling illness prevented Henry Mehlberg from becoming recognized more widely as the formidable scholar he was, when at his best. During World War II, he had lived in hiding under the false identity of an egg farmer, when the Nazis occupied his native Poland. After relatively short academic appointments at the University of Toronto and at Princeton University, he taught at the University of Chicago until reaching the age of normal retirement. But partly at the initiative of his Chicago colleague Charles Morris, who had preceded him to a 'post-retirement' profes sorship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and with the support of Eugene Wigner, he then received an appointment at that University, where he remained until his death in 1979. In Chicago, he organized a discussion group of scholars from that area as a kind of small scale model of the Vienna Circle, which met at his apart ment, where he lived with his first wife Janina, a mathematician. It was during this Chicago period that the functional disturbances from his illness were pronounced and not infrequent. The very unfortunate result was that colleagues who had no prior knowledge of the caliber of his writings in Polish and French or of his very considerable intellectual powers, had little incentive to read his published work, which he had begun to write in English.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Henryk Mehlberg, primarily because I want to recall his name to readers in the West; for, although Professor Mehlberg was the foremost Polish philosopher in the field of philosophy of time-in that version which is related to twentieth century physics-his fundamental work concerning time was published in English 43 years after its original publication (cf. Mehlberg, 1980). I am deeply indebted to Henryk Mehlberg. For two years after the Second World War, I was his student at Wroclaw University (where he lectured on philosophy and mathematical logic). At that time, I developed, under his influence, a long-life fascination with the philosophy of time, and was taught by him how to approach these problems effectively. My research in this field has resulted in three books. The first, Prop erties of Time, published (in Polish) in 1970, concerns the topological properties and properties of symmetry (homogeneity and anisotropy) of time. The second, The Nature of Time, published (in Polish) in 1975, looks at possible definitions of time within both theories of relativity. The present book is the third, originally published (in Polish) in 1979; it concerns philosophical problems of past, present, and future and is here presented in English to reach a wider audience.

Standard grammars claim Hebrew was aspect-prominent in the Bible, and tense-prominent in the Mishnah. But the semantic value of the verb forms in the intervening period in which the Dead Sea Scrolls were written has remained controversial. Penner answers the question of Qumran Hebrew verb form semantics using an empirical method: a database calculating the correlation between each form and each function, establishing that the ancient author’s selection of verb form is determined not by aspect, but by tense or modality. Penner then applies these findings to controversial interpretations of three Qumran texts.
