Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is presented of one year of systematic zenith observations made with similar photometers at two observing stations:Haleakala (latitude N 20.7 degrees) and Fritz Peak (latitude N 39.9 degrees). It is shown that, for an effec * tive wavelength of 5300 A, there is a change of intensity with sidereal time (and therefore right ascension) due to three components:(1) integrated starlight, (2) zodiacal light, and (3) airglow continuum. Quantitative separation of the components is made.A critical comparison is made with some earlier investigations with particular reference to the problem of the galactic light.(Author).

Book Absolute Photometry of the Light of the Night Sky

Download or read book Absolute Photometry of the Light of the Night Sky written by F. E. Roach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Absolute Photometry of the Light of the Night Sky: The Zenith Intensity of Haleakala (Latitude N 20. 7°) And at Fritz Peak (Latitude N 39. 9°) The earth-bound Observer not only has to attempt the resolution of the three components but also must contend with the effects of the extinction and scattering of the lower atmosphere. The problem of making the extinction and scattering corrections becomes progressively more difficult as the horizon is approached but, fortunately, zenith observations are not seriously affected. Book excerpt: In the vast expanse of the universe, where the night sky reveals countless stars, planets, and galaxies, the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds. Among the many tools at the disposal of astronomers and astrophysicists, photometry stands as a beacon of precision and insight. This book, "Photometry: Science, Sensitivity, and Its Connection to Astronomy," is your guided journey into the fascinating world of measuring and interpreting light in the cosmos. As you gaze upon the night sky, you might wonder: How do astronomers decipher the secrets held within the twinkling stars and distant galaxies? The answer lies in photometry, a powerful technique that allows scientists to quantify and analyze the luminous emissions of celestial objects. From determining the properties of stars and planets to unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos itself, photometry serves as the bedrock of astronomical research. In this book, we embark on an exploration of the science of photometry, delving deep into its principles, techniques, and applications. Whether you are an aspiring astronomer, a seasoned researcher, or simply a curious soul with a passion for the night sky, this book will illuminate the path to understanding the luminous tapestry of our universe.

Download or read book Astronomical Photometry written by Eugene F. Milone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will bring together experts in the field of astronomical photometry to discuss how their subfields provide the precision and accuracy in astronomical energy flux measurements that are needed to permit tests of astrophysical theories. Differential photometers and photometry, improvements in infrared precision, the improvements in precision and accuracy of CCD photometry, the absolute calibration of flux, the development of the Johnson UBVRI photometric system and other passband systems to measure and precisely classify specific types of stars and astrophysical quantities, and the current capabilities of spectrophotometry, and polarimetry to provide precise and accurate data, will all be discussed in this volume. The discussion of `differential’ or `two-star’ photometers will include those developed for planetary as well as stellar photometry and will range from the Princeton polarizing photometer through the pioneering work of Walraven to the differential photometers designed to measure the ashen light of Venus and to counter the effects of aurorae at high latitude sites; the last to be discussed will be the Rapid Alternate Detection System (RADS) developed at the University of Calgary in the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy appears to us as a combination of art, science, and philosophy. Its study puts the universe into perspective, giving a sense of pleasure in its beauty, awe at its immensity, and humility at our trivial place in it. From earliest human history, man has scrutinized the night sky - and wondered and marveled. With unaided eye but perceptive mind, he recognized order in the regular appearance and movements of individual objects, such as the planets and star groups (constellations), in their rhythmic and majestic progressions across the bowl of night. Even in the present era of scientific exactitude, there remains a profound awareness of mysteries beyond our present interpretations. It is only in comparatively recent years, however, that man has recognized that it takes more than conventional astronomy to account for the beauties ofthe night sky. Radiations in the Earth's upper atmosphere provide a foreground light, the study of which has come under a new name, aeronomy. The science of aeronomy has rapidly burgeoned, and the student of the light of the night sky finds that he is involved in an interdisciplinary domain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely updated, this second Edition gives a broad review of astronomical photometry to provide an understanding of astrophysics from a data-based perspective. It explains the underlying principles of the instruments used, and the applications and inferences derived from measurements. Each chapter has been fully revised to account for the latest developments, including the uses of CCDs. Thoroughly illustrated, this book provides an overview and historical background of the subject before reviewing the main themes within astronomical photometry. The central chapters focus on the practical design of the instruments and methodology used. The book continues by discussing specialized topics in stellar astronomy, concentrating on the information that can be derived from the analysis of the light curves of variable stars and especially close binary systems.
