Book Shinran s Kyogyoshinsho

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shinran
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-10-25
  • ISBN : 0199863105
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Shinran s Kyogyoshinsho written by Shinran and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated translation by Daisetz Suzuki (1870-1966) comprises the first four of six chapters of the Kyogyoshinsho, the definitive doctrinal work of Shinran (1173-1262). Shinran founded the Jodo Shin sect of Pure Land Buddhism, now the largest religious organization in Japan. Writing in Classical Chinese, Shinran began this, his magnum opus, while in exile and spent the better part of thirty years after his return to Kyoto revising the text. Although unfinished, Suzuki's translation conveys the text's core religious message, showing how Shinran offered a new understanding of faith through studying teachings before engaging in praxis, rather than the more common and far more limited view of faith in Buddhism as relevant to one just beginning their pursuit of Buddhist truth. Although Suzuki is best known for his scholarship on Zen Buddhism, he took a lifelong interest in Pure Land Buddhism. Suzuki's own religious perspective is evident in his translation of gyo as ''True Living'' rather than the expected ''Practice,'' and of sho as ''True Realizing of the Pure Land'' rather than the expected ''Enlightenment'' or ''Confirmation.'' This book contains the second edition of Suzuki's translation. It includes a number of corrections to the original 1973 edition, long out of print, as well as Suzuki's unfinished preface in its original form for the first time.

Book excerpt: Choose you this day whom ye will serve . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15). What kind of Christian are you? Are you a mere formal Christian, or are you a real Christian? Are you one of these men or women who call themselves Christians, who go to the house of God on Sunday, who go to Communion, and perhaps teach a Bible class or a Sunday school class, but run around to the theater, a card party, dances, and all the frivolity and foolishness of the world the rest of the week? Are you one of the Christians who is trying to hold on to Jesus Christ with one hand and the world with the other? Or are you a real Christian who has renounced the world with your whole heart and given yourself to Jesus Christ with all your heart, a Christian who can sing, “I surrender all” and mean it? Where are you? What kind of a Christian are you? Are you for Christ or are you against Him? You know you are either one or the other, for He says so. We read in Matthew 12:30 in the words of Jesus Himself: He that is not with me is against me. Everyone is either with Jesus wholeheartedly, confessedly, and openly, or else they are against Jesus. Which are you? For Christ or against Him?

Book The Heart of Unconditional Love

Download or read book The Heart of Unconditional Love written by Tulku Thondup and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unconditional love that we all long for can be experienced in the practice of loving-kindness. In this popular form of meditation, the love inherent to our own nature is gradually expanded until it embraces infinite beings. Tulku Thondup introduces a new four-stage format for this practice, rooted in the traditional teachings of Tibetan Buddhism: We first meditate on the Buddha of Loving-Kindness as a body of unconditional love and receive his blessings. This spontaneously awakens his unconditional love in our heart. We then find the whole world reflecting back to us as a world of love and peace. Finally, we remain in oneness in the realization of ultimate love.
