Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop "Astrophotography 87", which was held in Jena, April 21-24, 1987. The workshop was organized by the Central Institute of Astrophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic and is the latest in a series devoted to the problems of photography in astronomy. The previous workshops, which have taken place every three years, were held in Edinburgh (1984), Nice (1981) and Geneva (1978). For telescopes with large fields of view, in particular Schmidt telescopes, photographic plates are the only suitable radiation receiver. Thus the effi ciency of the photographic plate determines the quality of the observation. The treatment of the plates in the photographic laboratory is also very im portant. Additional factors affecting the scientific results are the measuring machines and the methods of interpretation. All these topics were discussed in the workshop by the 62 participants (26 from the GDR and 36 from 13 other countries. Thanks go to David Malin, the chairman of the working group "Astropho tography" of the International Astronomical Union, for writing an introduc tory article for the proceedings. I am grateful to all participants who pre sented papers during the workshop for sending in their manuscripts on time. Poster papers are arranged among the other papers according to the topics they treat. All participants also wish to express their thanks to Springer Verlag for publishing the proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past years, a number of international astronomical conferences were held at the Remeis-Observatory in Bamberg, four of them sponsored by the International Astronomical Union. The first meeting was organized in 1959 and dealt with Variable Stars, the last one was held in 1981 and focussed on 'Binary and Multiple Stars as Tracers of Stellar Evolution'. The present conference was organized to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, who was born in Minden on July 22, 1784, and died in Konigsberg on March 17, 1846. When the plan for an international conference on astrometric binaries was presented to several colleagues, we received enthusiastic support and decided to pursue the idea. A Scientific Organizing Committee was soon established, consisting of: Z. Kopal Manchester, u.K.S.M. Gong Nanjing, China (Chairman) M. Grewing Tiibingen, F.R.G.V. Abalakin Pulkovo, U.S.S.R.P. v. d. Kamp Amsterdam, Netherlands J. Dommanget Uccle, Belgium M. Kitamura Tokyo, Japan M.G. Fracastoro Torino, Italy J. Rahe Bamberg, F.R.G.W. Fricke Heidelberg, F.R.G. Ya. Yatskiv Kiev, U.S.S.R.E.H. Geyer Bonn, F.R.G. The meeting took place in Bamberg at the Remeis-Observatory, Astronomical Institute of the University Erlangen-Nurnberg, from June l3 to 15, 1984. The following institutions generously supported the meeting: Deutsche Forschungs gemeinschaft, Bonn; Stadt Bamberg; Universitat Bamberg; Universitat Erlangen Nurnberg; University of Manchester.

Book Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics

Download or read book Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics written by Hans-Volker Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth HEIDELBERG International Conference on Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics, DARK2002, was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in the period 4-9 February 2002. This majestic natural area was the site of the first conference of this series (hosted since 1996 in Heidelberg) to be held outside of Germany. Dark Matter has become one of the most exciting and central fields of as trophysics, particle physics and cosmology. The conference covered, as usual for this series, a large range of topics, theoretical and experimental. Topics included Astronomical Evidence for Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Supersymmetry, Inflation and Dark Energy, Structure Formation, Hot and Cold Dark Matter, and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays all of which were represented by experts in the field. It was very nice to see again many of our 'old' friends in Dark Matter here in South Africa. The organizers were very glad to see, in addition to world experts, the new generation here. Many young participants gave very nice professional talks during the conference. We are grateful to John Ellis for doing an incredible job preparing his excellent summary talk during the sessions. Some special interest and intensive discussions were naturally raised by the first announcement of terrestrial evidence for hot dark matter, obtained from neutrino less double beta decay. This now adds to the evidence for cold dark matter which we have from DAM A for several years already, and which remained unchallenged up to now by other experiments.

Book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II

Download or read book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II written by Miguel Chavez Dagostino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an up-to-date collection of reviews and contributed articles in the field of ultraviolet astronomy. Its content has been mainly motivated by the recent access to the rest frame UV light of distant red galaxies, gained through large optical facilities. This driveway has derived in a renewed interest on the stars that presumably dominate or have important effects on the integrated UV properties of evolved systems of the nearby and faraway Universe. The topics included in this volume extend from the fresh spectroscopic analyses of high redshift early-type galaxies observed with the 8-10m class telescopes to the fundamental outcomes from various satellites, from the long-lived International Ultraviolet Explorer to current facilities, such as the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. This is one of the few volumes published in recent years devoted to UV astronomical research and the only one dedicated to the properties of evolved stellar populations at these wavelengths. This contemporary panorama will be an invaluable resource in the preparation of the next planned space missions, such as the World Space Observatory and the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope.
