Book excerpt: Abraham is the father of the three religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism. Our understanding of Abraham and his stories differs depending on which religion we believe. However, let us begin with our belief and examine his story while he was Avram. He was born as a descendant of Shem in 2166 B.C.; at a place where idols were worshiped by a group known as the Chaldeans. We know those practices influenced Terah: his father, when we look at the Book of Joshua 24:2-3, which states, “2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith YAHUAH ELOHIM of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods. 3 And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac." Avram stood out as a man who sought and listened to YAHUAH when He spoke. Avram was eventually referred to as a friend of YAHUAH. When exploring Abraham’s life, we will show the three main events that stand out and examine why YAHUAH chose him to start a new chapter in redemptive history. Avram made one huge mistake with Hagar, but YAHUAH used him anyway. YAHUAH called Avram, but did you know He had to do so twice? There are two instances where Avram had to leave his hometown; first, he left Ur of the Chaldeans along with his father, Terah. Read Genesis 11:31, which says, “31 And Terah took Avram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Avram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.” Read carefully what Genesis 12:1 states, “1 Now YAHUAH had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” Notice his “kindred” was with him. We are told he departed his father's house, and he left Haran at the age of 75; this can be found in Genesis 12:4. It states, “4 So Avram departed, as YAHUAH had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Avram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.” Remember what we are told in Acts 7:2, which states, “2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The ELOHIM of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,” Here we see ELOHIM appearing to Avram in Mesopotamia before he dwelt in Haran (Charran). This event happened before Genesis 11:31. We will discover that Avram lived as a stranger in a foreign land, a land promised to him but was never given a foot of; the author of Hebrew 11:9 records this as an act of faith. It states, “9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.” Abraham believed in YAHUAH's promise and placed his hope in that promise. Wherever he went, he built an altar for YAHUAH; and lived according to His commands. Follow us on his journey from Avram to Abraham; the truth is just one click away.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Abraham smashing his father’s idols might be the most important Jewish story ever told and the key to how Jews define themselves. In a work at once deeply erudite and wonderfully accessible, Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin conducts readers through the life and legacy of this powerful story and explains how it has shaped Jewish consciousness. Offering a radical view of Jewish existence, The Gods Are Broken! views the story of the young Abraham as the “primal trauma” of Jewish history, one critical to the development of a certain Jewish comfort with rebelliousness and one that, happening in every generation, has helped Jews develop a unique identity. Salkin shows how the story continues to reverberate through the ages, even in its connection to the phenomenon of anti-Semitism. Salkin’s work—combining biblical texts, archaeology, rabbinic insights, Hasidic texts (some never before translated), philosophy, history, poetry, contemporary Jewish thought, sociology, and popular culture—is nothing less than a journey through two thousand years of Jewish life and intellectual endeavor.

Book Abraham the Nations and the Hagarites

Download or read book Abraham the Nations and the Hagarites written by Martin Goodman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews, Christians and Muslims describe their origins with close reference to the narrative of Abraham, including the complex story of Abraham's relation to Hagar. This volume sketches the history of interpretation of some of the key passages in this narrative, not least the verses which state that in Abraham all the nations of the earth will be blessed. This passage, which features prominently in Christian historiography, is largely disregarded in ancient Judaism, prompting the question how the relation between Abraham and the nations was perceived in Jewish sources. This focus is supplemented with the question how Islamic historiography relates to the Abraham narrative, and in particular to the descent of the Arabs from Abraham through Ishmael and Hagar. In studying the traditional readings of these narratives, the volume offers a detailed yet wide-ranging analysis of important aspects of the accounts of their origins which emerged within the three Abrahamic religions.

Book excerpt: Did you know that Abraham was born a Chaldean but died a Hebrew? This is a fascinating story of a man who took God at his word, and did everything God asked him to do without hesitation. Ten times God tested him, but he never wavered. That's why God called him righteous and blessed him beyond measure. The Story of Abraham takes us back to the city of Ur of the Chaldees, about 250 years after the flood, before God called Abraham. The southern part of ancient Mesopotamia was called Chaldea, and Ur was the most important city in Chaldea, which was located on the western part of the Euphrates River. The land of Chaldea contained riches beyond imagination, and Ur was the wealthiest city in that part of the world. In this story you will learn why God chose Abraham, how he became the father of all who believe in the Lord God, how he became a Hebrew and why only one of his sons was born according to God's plan of salvation.

Book The Commentary of Abraham Ibn Ezra on the Pentateuch Leviticus

Download or read book The Commentary of Abraham Ibn Ezra on the Pentateuch Leviticus written by Abraham ben Meïr Ibn Ezra and published by KTAV Publishing House, Inc.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet, Biblical commentator, grammarian, astronomer, mathematician--Abraham ibn Ezra was one of the most remarkable men of his time and one of the relatively few whose works have become the heritage of all those who wish to understand the Hebrew Bible properly. Ibn Ezra combined a passion for the plain sense of the verse with a reverence for the Rabbis as transmitters of reliable tradition. His most widely used works are his commentaries on the Torah, which are admired for their depth and penetration into the mysteries of the Hebrew language, the text of the Torah and the meaning of the mitzvot. Because of their many-faceted character and elusive language, his commentaries are often difficult to understand in their original Hebrew, and have thus inspired many super-commentaries. Here for the first time is an English translation of ibn Ezra's commentary on the Book of Leviticus, and the Book of Deuteronomy based on those super-commentaries, in a style which is both faithful to the original and yet enables those who wish to fathom his meaning to do so. An English rendering of Leviticus and Deuteronomy appears at the top of each page; the bottom of each page contains the translation of ibn Ezra's commentary. This volume includes and Appendix of astronomical units, and indices of Biblical and Talmudic references.

Book The Hebrew Story of Abraham and Isaac

Download or read book The Hebrew Story of Abraham and Isaac written by Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-05-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in the series about our Hebrew Fathers (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob). I wrote this book for someone who would be willing to come along with me on an exciting journey of deeper reflection, someone willing to pull back the layers of translation traditions by looking at the original Hebrew in the story of Abraham and his son Isaac. Whether you are part of today's "Jewish people" or of the nations of the world that worship Israel's God in Christ Jesus - this book is for you because these great Torah stories are your heritage as well. Without them, you, too, just like an Israelite of old, do not know where you came from and where it is that you are going.
