Book excerpt: The educated, well-travelled John Xavier travels from his continental base to set up a European business centre in Dublin for his employers in the late 1990s. He brings over 100s of young foreign workers with a vision to create the best working conditions possible. Sorcha Cassidy is a new hire to the HR department, having left her low-paid charity job in town, attracted by the possibilities. She joins careerists looking for a bright future and moves out to the developing suburbs. Sorcha starts to become distanced from the life she knew before as she becomes immersed in the new culture. Courtney, an American with connections to the company, has arrived to set up home with her Irish husband and they rent an apartment in the area. Sorcha's neighbours are a Polish and French couple hoping to have a family life in the new country. There are also countless Europeans and Irish locals taking their chance on a bright future. The initial start up bonhomie is short-lived as the parent company announces financial trouble and major cutbacks. The management team slowly fractures and Sorcha's already busy schedule is increased. The combination of work and lack of a personal life hits her hard. Her family history and a concern about making her life work obliges her to do an 'about turn' and reconsider her situation. Religion does not provide any answers and she finds herself attracted to the burgeoning anti-capitalist movement. A trip to the US shows large divisions between rich and poor. She realises that she has little choice but to stay within the system for the time being while consciously working on a plan of her own to create her own ideal existence.

Peirce, William James, John Dewey and George H Mead. Pragmatism begins with a thoroughgoing critique of the Cartesianism that dominated so much of modern philosophy. The pragmatic thinkers reject a sharp dichotomy between subject and object, mind-body dualism, the quest for certainty and the spectator theory of knowledge. They seek to bring about a sea change in philosophy that highlights the social character of human experience and normative social practices, the self-correcting nature of all inquiry, and the continuity of theory and practice. And they-especially James, Dewey, and Mead-emphasize the democratic ethical-political consequences of a pragmatic orientation. Book excerpt: Edited by Richard Grusin of the Center for 21st Century Studies, this is the first book to name and characterize—and therefore consolidate—a wide array of current critical, theoretical, and philosophical approaches to the humanities and social sciences under the concept of the nonhuman turn. Each of these approaches is engaged in decentering the human in favor of a concern for the nonhuman, understood by contributors in a variety of ways—in terms of animals, affectivity, bodies, materiality, technologies, and organic and geophysical systems. The nonhuman turn in twenty-first-century studies can be traced to multiple intellectual and theoretical developments from the last decades of the twentieth century: actor-network theory, affect theory, animal studies, assemblage theory, cognitive sciences, new materialism, new media theory, speculative realism, and systems theory. Such varied analytical and theoretical formations obviously diverge and disagree in many of their assumptions, objects, and methodologies. However, they all take up aspects of the nonhuman as critical to the future of twenty-first-century studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Unlike the posthuman turn, the nonhuman turn does not make a claim about teleology or progress in which we begin with the human and see a transformation from the human to the posthuman. Rather, the nonhuman turn insists (paraphrasing Bruno Latour) that “we have never been human,” that the human has always coevolved, coexisted, or collaborated with the nonhuman—and that the human is identified precisely by this indistinction from the nonhuman. Other essential themes in the book include: IS&R research models, frameworks and theories; search and works tasks and situations in context; interaction between humans and machines; information acquisition, relevance and information use; research design and methodology based on a structured set of explicit variables - all set into the holistic cognitive approach. The present monograph invites the reader into a construction project - there is much research to do for a contextual understanding of IS&R. The Turn represents a wide-ranging perspective of IS&R by providing a novel unique research framework, covering both individual and social aspects of information behavior, including the generation, searching, retrieval and use of information.
