Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html The word of God, being the most true and perfect rule of piety, as said, all Christians need, but shepherds, that is, bishops and priests, especially: for they took the “key of understanding” ( Luke 11:52 ), which is the word of God “No one can serve two masters ,” says the Lord ( Matt. 6:24 ). About this, St. John Chrysostom teaches: “Do not tell me that you are not worshiping the golden idol, but show me that you are not doing what the gold commands you to do. For the images of idolatry are different: one honors the mammon for gentlemen, another - the womb for God, another - the most universal lust. You do not devour oxen like the Greeks, but much worse, you slaughter your soul; you don’t kneel, you don’t worship, but with great obedience you do everything that commands you womb, gold and lust torment. Therefore, the Greeks are vile, because our passions have been enriched.” (Conversation 6 on the Epistle to the Romans).

Book Simply Christian

  • Author : N. T. Wright
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2010-02-09
  • ISBN : 0061920622
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Simply Christian written by N. T. Wright and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is justice fair? Why are so many people pursuing spirituality? Why do we crave relationship? And why is beauty so beautiful? N. T. Wright argues that each of these questions takes us into the mystery of who God is and what he wants from us. For two thousand years Christianity has claimed to answer these mysteries, and this renowned biblical scholar and Anglican bishop shows that it still does today. Like C. S. Lewis did in his classic Mere Christianity, Wright makes the case for Christian faith from the ground up, assuming that the reader is starting from ground zero with no predisposition to and perhaps even some negativity toward religion in general and Christianity in particular. His goal is to describe Christianity in as simple and accessible, yet hopefully attractive and exciting, a way as possible, both to say to outsides ÔYou might want to look at this further,Ö and to say to insiders ÔYou may not have quite understood this bit clearly yet.Ö

Book One True God

  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book One True God written by Rodney Stark and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western history would be unrecognizable had it not been for people who believed in One True God. There would have been wars, but no religious wars. There would have been moral codes, but no Commandments. Had the Jews been polytheists, they would today be only another barely remembered people, less important, but just as extinct as the Babylonians. Had Christians presented Jesus to the Greco-Roman world as ''another'' God, their faith would long since have gone the way of Mithraism. And surely Islam would never have made it out of the desert had Muhammad not removed Allah from the context of Arab paganism and proclaimed him as the only God. The three great monotheisms changed everything. With his customary clarity and vigor, Rodney Stark explains how and why monotheism has such immense power both to unite and to divide. Why and how did Jews, Christians, and Muslims missionize, and when and why did their efforts falter? Why did both Christianity and Islam suddenly become less tolerant of Jews late in the eleventh century, prompting outbursts of mass murder? Why were the Jewish massacres by Christians concentrated in the cities along the Rhine River, and why did the pogroms by Muslims take place mainly in Granada? How could the Jews persist so long as a minority faith, able to withstand intense pressures to convert? Why did they sometimes assimilate? In the final chapter, Stark also examines the American experience to show that it is possible for committed monotheists to sustain norms of civility toward one another. A sweeping social history of religion, One True God shows how the great monotheisms shaped the past and created the modern world.

Book Grounded in the Gospel

Download or read book Grounded in the Gospel written by J. I. Packer and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the church's ministry of grounding new believers in the essentials of the faith has been known as catechesis--systematic instruction in faith foundations, including what we believe, how we pray and worship, and how we conduct our lives. For most evangelicals today, however, this very idea is an alien concept. Packer and Parrett, concerned for the state of the church, seek to inspire a much needed evangelical course correction. This new book makes the case for a recovery of significant catechesis as a nonnegotiable practice of churches, showing the practice to be complementary to, and of no less value than, Bible study, expository preaching, and other formational ministries, and urging evangelical churches to find room for this biblical ministry for the sake of their spiritual health and vitality.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html If Prayer , or invocation of the name of God, belongs to the threefold Christian duty: to duty to God, duty to oneself and duty to one's neighbor. 1) It is our duty to God to show our faith in Him by prayer and His calling, that we truly believe in Him, we don’t know any other God except Him, we confess the source of all His blessings, hope on Him, as on The True Father, Who loves His children and offers what he asks, just like children in the flesh do not come to a strange father, but to their own, from whom they were born, they come with petition. And the apostle says: “How to call on him in whom they have not believed” ( Rom. 10:14 )? And the Lord God Himself says: “I am the Lord your God” ( Exodus 20: 2 ), that is, know Me alone, confess, trust Me alone and seek all good from Me. “Call Me on the day of your sorrow, and I will deliver you” ***** ( Ps. 49:15 ). 2) Duty in relation to ourselves: since we are both physically and spiritually meager, poor and cursed, we must in faith seek all good from the Giver of all blessings - Heavenly Father. 3) The following applies to the duty concerning the neighbor: Christian love requires us to pray for our neighbor, and both ourselves and him should be asked for good from our God, as the apostle says: “Pray for each other to be healed” ( James 5:16 ).
