Book Aboriginal Health and History

Download or read book Aboriginal Health and History written by Ernest Hunter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-06-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (1987-1991) focused attention on the behavioural dimension of Aboriginal health and the lack of appropriate services. This book is a systematic analysis of the sociohistorical and intercultural aspects of mental health in one area of remote Australia, the Kimberly. The author shows how the effects of social disruption, cultural dislocation and loss of power suffered by Aboriginal people have manifested themselves in certain behavioural patterns. The book analyses rising mortality rates from suicide, accidents and homicide amongst Kimberley Aboriginal communities and studies the economic impact of alcohol on these communities. It also considers the role of alcohol in producing violent behaviour and affecting the general level of health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yatdjuligin: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing and Midwifery Care introduces students to the fundamentals of the healthcare of Indigenous Australians, from the perspective of both the patient and the professional. Aboriginal Elder Ivy Molly Booth gifted the word Yatdjuligin to the authors to use as the title of this textbook. The word Yatdjuligin literally translates to 'talking in a good way'. For Wakgun people the process of Yatdjuligin is deeply embedded in learning. Written by a team of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nursing and midwifery academics, and practising nurses, this book is designed for both non-Indigenous and Indigenous nurses, who will work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The book includes chapters on the history of health service provision for Australian Indigenous people, gender, midwifery, community-controlled health services, remote area nursing, mental health and caring for Indigenous Elders, and features case studies and critical thinking questions.

Download or read book In Our Own Right written by Sally Goold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intimate, private, and heart wrenching stories told in this book, the first of its kind in Australia, will penetrate the hearts and souls of even the most hardened reader. Told with incredible dignity and humility, each of the individual and deeply personal stories recounted is a powerful testimony to the gross inhumanity and brutal capacity of white people in Australia - colonists who selectively destroy and humiliate, without remorse, the lives and souls of their fellow black Australians. In Our Own Right: Black Australian Nurses' Stories provides a powerful catalyst for questioning and calling into question the taken-for-granted humanity of us all.

Book Aboriginal Healthworkers

Download or read book Aboriginal Healthworkers written by Bill Genat and published by ISBS. This book was released on 2006 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aboriginal healthworkers are employed by Australian primary health care services to help bridge the gap between the Western medical clinic and their own kin. Much controversy surrounds what they can and should be doing. Aboriginal Healthworkers looks at what healthworkers do, what they think about their work, and how their work is perceived by doctors, nurses, social workers, transport workers, and, crucially, their Aboriginal clients. The author's unique contribution brings ethnographic methods to his study of a group of urban healthworkers, and allows their voices to be heard. Healthworkers speak frankly about the state of Aboriginal primary health care in Australia. Daily visits to homes of families whose health continues to be eroded by the historical legacy of exclusion, cultural oppression, and racism highlight the serious lack of professional recognition and support. In response, this powerful book portrays the unique healing practice offered by Aboriginal healthworkers and urges that practical steps be taken to bolster their holistic approach.
