Book Indigenous Perspectives on Sacred Natural Sites

Download or read book Indigenous Perspectives on Sacred Natural Sites written by Jonathan Liljeblad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much previous literature on sacred natural sites has been written from a non-indigenous perspective. In contrast, this book facilitates a greater self-expression of indigenous perspectives regarding treatment of the sacred and its protection and governance in the face of threats from various forms of natural resource exploitation and development. It provides indigenous custodians the opportunity to explain how they view and treat the sacred through a written account that is available to a global audience. It thus illuminates similarities and differences of both definitions, interpretations and governance approaches regarding sacred natural phenomena and their conservation. The volume presents an international range of case studies, from the recent controversy of pipeline construction at Standing Rock, a sacred site for the Sioux people spanning North and South Dakota, to others located in Australia, Canada, East Timor, Hawaii, India, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria and the Philippines. Each chapter includes an analytical introduction and conclusion written by the editors to identify common themes, unique insights and key messages. The book is therefore a valuable teaching resource for students of indigenous studies, anthropology, religion, heritage, human rights and law, nature conservation and environmental protection. It will also be of great interest to professionals and NGOs concerned with nature and heritage conservation.

Book Heritage Values in Site Management

Download or read book Heritage Values in Site Management written by Marta De la Torre and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of the four historic sites featured in this publication-Grosse Ile and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site in Canada, Chaco Culture National Historical Park in the United States, Port Arthur Historic Site in Australia, and Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site in the United Kingdom-provides valuable insight into the creation and management of heritage values. Each case study articulates how values are identified and assessed by the governing bodies; where (and with whom) the values reside; how the values are implemented into management policies and objectives; and the impact that these decisions have on the sites themselves. This book will be a vital tool for institutions and individuals engaged in the study or practice of site management, conservation planning, and/or historic preservation. Also included is a CD-ROM that contains supplemental management and planning documents created and used by the site-management authorities."

Book Aboriginal Environmental Impacts

Download or read book Aboriginal Environmental Impacts written by James L. Kohen and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Captain Arthur Phillip arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney, he saw a magnificent harbour lined with trees. Many areas were park-like in appearance with well-spaced trees interspersed with patches of grass. The local Aborigines were soon driven away and with them went the practice of regularly burning off the undergrowth. The grass disappeared and the undergrowth took over, and so emerged the 'untidy' bush of the foreshore that we see today. For 50,000 years before white settlement the Aboriginal people were an integral part of the environment. They harvested the land and they changed the environment to suit themselves. Fire was their tool for doing this. The degree to which hunting and burning has changed the patterns of vegetation and populations of fauna is hotly debated. Were the Aborigines responsible for the disappearance of the megafauna? In this book Kohen says they were a contributing factor, but probably only after major population declines due to climate change. He presents the arguments and evidence to show that Aboriginal influence on many ecosystems of this continent has been profound and that any understanding of the Australian environment must take this into account.
