Book excerpt: While Abner Doubleday is remembered primarily, and mistakenly, for having "invented" baseball (he did not), it was his selfless exercise of duty to his nation that should be honored. Following his youth in Auburn, New York, and his days as a cadet at West Point to the Union general's involvement in the American Civil War and his public service afterwards, he is revealed in this biography as a man who took unpopular stands but was guided by a firm vision of justice. One chapter fully explores the baseball myth.

Book excerpt: Oh, the Sundays when the powerful voices of "Wings Over Jordan" flooded, no, bombarded every house in the neighborhood. Perhaps sun oozed into our parlors or rain beat down the roses in each yard. Perhaps, the snow fell in white layers on the pavements, porches, yards of our houses but the melodic voices of our talented brothers and sisters encouraged us to go on and on and on. I'm sure this was what inspired Papa to go each day for long hours to barber, what inspired him to keep on keeping on. What made us all go ever forward in our every day happenings since, in these wonderful, inspirational songs, always introduced with, "Go Down Moses, Way down in Egypt Land. Tell Ole Pharaoh to let my people go!" our lives were peaceful because all was well with our souls. These great, grand spirituals gave this all-Black community a promise of hope and the expectancy of good things to come. To us, that was what it all was about.

  • Author : Abner Greene
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

  • ISBN : 0674065174
  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book Against Obligation written by Abner Greene and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do citizens of a nation such as the United States have a moral duty to obey the law? Do officials, when interpreting the Constitution, have an obligation to follow what that text meant when ratified? To follow precedent? To follow what the Supreme Court today says the Constitution means? These are questions of political obligation (for citizens) and interpretive obligation (for anyone interpreting the Constitution, often officials). Abner Greene argues that such obligations do not exist. Although citizens should obey some laws entirely, and other laws in some instances, no one has put forth a successful argument that citizens should obey all laws all the time. Greene's case is not only "against" obligation. It is also "for" an approach he calls "permeable sovereignty": all of our norms are on equal footing with the state's laws. Accordingly, the state should accommodate religious, philosophical, family, or tribal norms whenever possible. Greene shows that questions of interpretive obligation share many qualities with those of political obligation. In rejecting the view that constitutional interpreters must follow either prior or higher sources of constitutional meaning, Greene confronts and turns aside arguments similar to those offered for a moral duty of citizens to obey the law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Am I Doing Here? is a startling masterwork by one of the forgotten innovators of American comics. In 1945, after more than a decade as a commercial illustrator—drawing advertisements and cartoons for Life, Time, Esquire, Newsweek, and many other publications—Abner Dean invented a genre all his own: One might call it the Existential Gag Cartoon. He used the elegant draftsmanship and single-panel format of the standard cartoons of the day, but turned them to a deeper, stranger purpose. With an inimitable mixture of wit, earnestness, and enigmatic surrealism, Dean uses this most ephemeral of forms to explore the deepest mysteries of human existence. What Am I Doing Here?, Dean’s second book and perhaps his best, depicts a world at once alien and familiar, in which everyone is naked but acts like they’re clothed—a world of club-wielding commuters and byzantine inventions, secret fears and perverse satisfactions. Through it all strolls (or crawls, or floats, or stumbles) Dean’s unclad Everyman, searching for love, happiness, and the answers to life’s biggest questions. This NYRC edition is a jacketed hardcover with extra-thick paper, and features brand-new, restored scans of the original artwork throughout.

Book Al Capp

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Schumacher
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2013-02-26
  • ISBN : 1608197859
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Al Capp written by Michael Schumacher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than thirty years have passed since Al Capp's death, and he may no longer be a household name. But at the height of his career, his groundbreaking comic strip, Li'l Abner, reached ninety million readers. The strip ran for forty-three years, spawned two movies and a Broadway musical, and originated such expressions as "hogwash" and "double-whammy." Capp himself was a familiar personality on TV and radio; as a satirist, he was frequently compared to Mark Twain. Though Li'l Abner brought millions joy, the man behind the strip was a complicated and often unpleasant person. A childhood accident cost him a leg-leading him to art as a means of distinguishing himself. His apprenticeship with Ham Fisher, creator of Joe Palooka, started a twenty-year feud that ended in Fisher's suicide. Capp enjoyed outsized publicity for a cartoonist, but his status abetted sexual misconduct and protected him from the severest repercussions. Late in life, his politics became extremely conservative; he counted Richard Nixon as a friend, and his gift for satire was redirected at targets like John Lennon, Joan Baez, and anti-war protesters on campuses across the country. With unprecedented access to Capp's archives and a wealth of new material, Michael Schumacher and Denis Kitchen have written a probing biography. Capp's story is one of incredible highs and lows, of popularity and villainy, of success and failure-told here with authority and heart.

Book Abner Doubleday His Life and Times

Download or read book Abner Doubleday His Life and Times written by JoAnn Smith Bartlett and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abner Doubleday: His Life and Times is a full-length biography of a man who lingered on the fringes of history for nearly 150 years. His story is one of a man who was remembered for a myth, not his actual deeds. This story sheds light on the man who was as complex as any modern person; a man who was far ahead of his time. When General John F. Reynolds fell at the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg, it was Doubleday who took on the command of the troops during the first day. As the Union retreated at the end of the day and the two armies flowed through the streets, Abner was seen in the midst of the wounded and stragglers as he tried to learn more details of the action. He rode rapidly back to the front. His horse was covered with foam and the flushed face of the General bespoke the tremendous strain under which he was laboring. A subordinate officer described Abner, He handles his troops under fire with the same composure he would exhibit at a review or parade. (He is) a man of unquestioned bravery, cool and clear sighted on the battlefield.
