A month later, her father was down to two oxen with a distance still to travel, so instead of buying more, he trades her for six oxen to a man who will marry her and spend the rest of his life with her. Sebastian Appleby has always been considered odd. He worked with his father and brothers ranching just outside of Clover Creek. Unable to find a woman, he had long since determined he would always be alone. When approached with the prospect of trading oxen for a bride, he doesn’t hesitate. Entering into a marriage with Bastian is not only Abby’s only option, it feels right. She doesn’t mind his differences from other men, and he doesn’t mind that he had to pay her father for her. But will the two of them ever have real feelings for one another? Or will their marriage always be a sham?

Book excerpt: The paradoxes set up between love and sex in contemporary American life are explored with subtle insight and brilliantly incisive humor in this culturally prescient novel. Domestic Arrangements is about a recognizable family facing a recognizable dilemma—how to respond to their daughter’s first affair. The Englebergs are not altogether ordinary though: Mom is Amanda, an in-demand actress whose specialties are TV commercials and soap operas; Daddy is Lionel, the director of an Emmy-winning TV documentary; Tatiana, our fourteen-year-old narrator, is a budding actress who just filmed her first ‘tasteful’ nude scene; and finally Cordelia, Tatiana’s acerbic and sharp-witted sister who is facing her own crisis of self-image. Norma Klein’s novel speaks to a multitude of readers who will empathize with the foibles of our time in every scene of this perceptive and honest literary entertainment.

This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characters provide the entry point to the story of the books of Samuel, just as they do in all stories. In this book the history of research into characters in Samuel, and the role(s) they play in the text are examined and discussed. The contributors look at the interpretative function of characters in the Samuel stories, and at issues of textual composition and what profiling of characters within the text can add to theories surrounding this issue. Specific characters are also profiled and studied. The character of God is examined: is God kind towards Israel? Is God loving and 'worthy to be praised' 2 Sam 22.4. Characters such as Hannah are examined from the perspective of literary type, as well as Eli as priest and Samuel himself as prophet. All of the major characters within the books are studied, including David and Jonathan, and chapters also treat the minor characters and offer information on their roles in the structure of the text. The contributors provide a range of different approaches to characterization, according to their specific expertise, and provide a thorough handbook to the characters in Samuel and their roles in the literary make-up of the text.

Download or read book Keeping Record written by Abigail S Armstrong and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production and retention of written records was a common and important facet of pre-modern rulership and administration. Much of our understanding of governmental practices and expressions of authority come from the contents of such documents, which have been well studied. Less studied, however, are the records themselves as artefacts. This volume is an attempt to redress this balance by taking a more holistic, material approach to a range of written records. Through a series of case studies, this volume explores questions regarding the material characteristics of various records and their use. It demonstrates that the material features of the records, including the size and shape, the hands that wrote them and the material substrate, can shed new light on the functioning of government and the declarations of power these records asserted. The ten contributions of this volume focus on records from a variety of rulers, political systems and administrations. With four case studies from early China and six from medieval Europe, this volume offers transcultural perspectives to demonstrate how different cultures expressed rulership and administration materially through the use of text-bearing artefacts.

Book Print Power and Cultural Hegemony

Download or read book Print Power and Cultural Hegemony written by Federico Dal Bo and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federico Dal Bo examines the design of early Hebrew books from the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, focusing not only on the words in these early books but also on how they were arranged on the page. He follows in the tradition of scholars such as Christopher de Hamel, Marvin J. Heller, and David Stern, who have explored the importance of these Hebrew books in influencing Jewish learning and attracting the interest of Christians. The author discusses important prints, such as the first Talmud and rabbinical bibles, which marked a shift from being for Jewish readers only to being for both Jews and Christians. The collaboration between Jewish editors and Christian printers changed the way these books looked and the audience for whom they were intended. At first, these early prints copied the style of handwritten Hebrew manuscripts. The simple layout could be difficult to read, especially for long books like the Bible or Talmud. But over time, influenced by the humanism of the Italian Renaissance, the layout became more complex. The book also looks at how the layout changed from full-page commentaries to a more complicated design in which the main text and commentaries shared the same page. This shift challenged the idea of who was the primary author and emphasized the role of editors. The layout, with the main text in the center and the commentaries on the sides, created a kind of unwritten rule for how to read religious texts. Dal Bo's study also includes new information about a 1553 trial in which the Talmud was burned. Overall, it explores how the layout of these early Hebrew books shaped cultural power and influenced how people read.
