Book The Philosophy of Buddhism

Download or read book The Philosophy of Buddhism written by A. Verdu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1981-09-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riddles that world-causation pose to the human mind lie at the bottom of all cosmological systems of thought. In their origins, all philosophical attitudes are conditioned by partiality and "perspectivism. " The philosopher's attempted flight towards the seemingly remote kingdom of truth is often aborted by the binding twines of perspectival language. Thus his insights lose themselves in conflicting, contradictory manifestos. Greek cosmology, as it is formally set forth by the pre-Socratics, is a clear example of this weary pilgrimage of mind's embodied vision from angle to angle, from perspective to perspective. Not less is to be expected from the systems of Hinduism and, mutatis mutandis, also of Buddhist thought. More confined from the very outset to the study of reality as a study of human existence, of its awareness of embodiment, of its spatio-temporal bondage, and of its ultimate ontological status, Buddhism gave rise to truly astounding theories of "life-world" causation. The process of Buddhist thought, as it refers to the nature of the human experience as "in-the-world" existence, covers a vast range of doctrines, from original theories of pluralism and phenomenalism with sectional, multifarious and relativistic notions of causality, through the unitary conceptions of monistic idealism, up to the top of universal integrationism and dialectical totalism.

The sublime ideas embodied in this book have been made possible thanks to her present selfless deeds in the field of Yoga; besides her previous spiritual karmas are manifesting themselves to lead men, woman and children towards inner greatness. Many people have seen the Inner Light through her teachings. This book deals with Self-Analysis, the power, the deep meditation, the Divine Light, the Universal Love, the Bliss that pervades the souls of human beings, the height of inner perfection and the flood-gate of spirituality in practical action. Intellect fades away before the power of Spirit through which the possibility of Super-Consciousness is perfectly revealed. Book The Margins of Discretion in Transnational Administrative Acts

Download or read book The Margins of Discretion in Transnational Administrative Acts written by Kathrin Hamenstädt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the expulsion of delinquent foreigners and their exclusion from the territory through a comparative lens. The book begins with a vertical perspective, focusing on the effects of European standards on the law of expulsion and entry bans in Germany and the Netherlands, and the law regulating deportation from the United Kingdom. It explores how these countries use their margin of discretion, granted by European law, to solve the societal, political and legal challenges that are posed by delinquent foreigners. Moreover, it highlights the similarities, convergences and differences between these countries' approaches to the topic. Subsequently, the book adopts a horizontal perspective by focusing on the effects of national decisions on other states, thereby addressing transnational administrative acts. National expulsion decisions and entry bans can be given effect throughout European countries, with the consequence that other states are in principle obliged to enforce them by refusing foreigners access to their territory. This obligation arises despite the fact that expulsion decisions and entry bans are adopted on the basis of diverging national provisions. Even though the margin of discretion of national decision makers has already been limited, the remaining differences call for further recommendations, which are put forward in this book.

Book The Jaina Worldview

Download or read book The Jaina Worldview written by Lucas den Boer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an analysis of the philosophical chapters of the Tattvārthādhigama (TA), a foundational text for the Jaina tradition and the first text that presented the Jaina worldview in a clear and systematic way. The book also includes the first English translation of its oldest commentary, the Tattvārthādhigamabhāṣya (TABh). Focusing on the philosophical sections of the TA and TABh, which deviate from the traditional views and introduce several new concepts for the Jaina tradition, the analysis suggests that the TA and the TABh were written by different authors, and that both texts contain several historical layers. The texts reflect aspects of the concurrent intellectual movements, and the textual analysis includes comparisons with the views of other schools, such as the Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika traditions, and offers an in-depth analysis of the philosophical content of these works. The appendix contains an English translation from the original Sanskrit text of the TA and provides the first English translation of the commentary on these passages from the TABh. Situating the text in the wider history of Indian philosophy, the book offers a better understanding of the role of the Jainas in the history of Indian thought. It will be of interest to those studying Indian philosophy, Indian thought and Asian religions.

Download or read book A Culture of Sufism written by Dina Le Gall and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Culture of Sufism opens a window to a new understanding of one of the most prolific and enduring of all the Sufi brotherhoods, the Naqshbandiyya, as it spread from its birthplace in central Asia to Iran, Anatolia, Arabia, and the Balkans between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Drawing on original sources and carefully aware of the power of modern paradigms to obscure, Le Gall portrays a Naqshbandiyya that was devotionally sober yet not demysticized and rigorously orthodox without being politically activist. She argues that the establishment of this brotherhood in Ottoman society was not the product of political instrumentality. Instead the Naqshbandī dissemination is best explained in reference to a series of little-appreciated organizational and cultural modes such as proclivity to long-distance travel, independence from specialized Sufi institutions, linguistic adaptability, commitment to writing and copying, and the practice of bequeathing spiritual authority to non-kin.

Book The Blissful Abidance Series Volume Two

Download or read book The Blissful Abidance Series Volume Two written by Floyd Henderson and published by Henderson Books. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology contains the six books that make up what has been called "The Blissful Abidance Series" for those seeking to live blissfully and happily for the remainder of the manifestation. The series offers an opportunity for seekers to understand what bliss is and what bliss is not; to understand why one must reach a zero-concept, no-mind state if any degree of peace is to manifest; to understand how to be liberated from the bliss-negating influence of personality; to understand how to fixate in the bliss rather than fluctuating constantly between states of happiness and unhappiness; to understand why freedom must be built from a position of emptiness and neutrality; and to find how to overlay Reality on the relative so that the relative can be enjoyed more fully. How many seekers are frustrated by not having attained bliss? How many seekers think that they have failed or that their teacher has failed? The problem lies in all of the misunderstandings about bliss, so the author explains what bliss actually is and what bliss is not. To understand that distinction is to provide the opportunity to finally relax and take it easy. The author also shows how originally the mind was a constructive tool but has become a tool of destruction and self-destruction. Advaitin sages for centuries have correctly noted that the main problem among the masses centers in the mind; this book addresses the remedy. Also, this book also studies the nine most basic persona types and offers the way to be free of the influences of personality; furthermore, almost all persons on the planet are seeking, but most are trapped in the fluctuations between happiness and unhappiness. The source of fluctuations and chaos are discussed along with the means by which they can end. Finally, the content of this book shows what the relative existence looks like if Reality is overlaid upon it as well as what it will be like if that does not happen.

Book The Addiction Prone Personality

Download or read book The Addiction Prone Personality written by Gordon E. Barnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates whether or not there is a causal link between personality traits and the development of alcohol abuse. Findings suggest that there is such a link: people who are inclined toward sensation-seeking are likely to consume more alcohol, and those who show high levels of psychotic and/or antisocial behavior are more inclined to have alcohol problems. The authors successfully develop and validate a measure of the Addiction-Prone Personality.

Download or read book Ornament of Abhidharma written by Chim Jampalyang and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 1368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The single greatest Tibetan commentary—never previously translated—on one of the most well-known and cited works of classical Indian Buddhism. This work by a scholar of the Kadam school is the most authoritative Tibetan commentary on Vasubandhu’s Treasury of Abhidharma (Abhidharmakosa). In terms of stature and authority, Vasubandhu’s Treasury rivals Buddhaghosa’s contemporaneous Path of Purification and deals with such central themes as the dynamics of emotions and karma, of mental and meditative states; it treats both the cosmos and the life within. Chim Jampalyang’s exposition of it is the greatest flowering of Abhidharma studies in Tibet. Usually referred to as the Chimzö, it is to this day a key textbook in the great monastic universities. A veritable encyclopedia, it spans all areas of classical Indian Buddhist knowledge and is an indispensable reference for scholars of Buddhism. The Library of Tibetan Classics is a special series being developed by the Institute of Tibetan Classics to make key classical Tibetan texts part of the global literary and intellectual heritage. Eventually comprising thirty-two large volumes, the collection will contain over two hundred distinct texts by more than a hundred of the best-known Tibetan authors. These texts have been selected in consultation with the preeminent lineage holders of all the schools and other senior Tibetan scholars to represent the Tibetan literary tradition as a whole.

Book The Civic Culture Transformed

Download or read book The Civic Culture Transformed written by Russell J. Dalton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-evaluates Almond, Verba, and Pye's original ideas about the shape of a civic culture that supports democracy. Marshaling a massive amount of cross-national, longitudinal public opinion data from the World Values Survey Association, the authors demonstrate multiple manifestations of a deep shift in the mass attitudes and behaviors that undergird democracy. The chapters in this book show that in dozens of countries around the world, citizens have turned away from allegiance toward a decidedly 'assertive' posture to politics: they have become more distrustful of electoral politics, institutions, and representatives and are more ready to confront elites with demands from below. Most importantly, societies that have advanced the most in the transition from an allegiant to an assertive model of citizenship are better-performing democracies - in terms of both accountable and effective governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INITIAL AWAKENING is most important shift that can occur within our lifetime, but even that key development is no more than an invitation to the larger dance. Ultimately, if we do not clear up after we wake up, then awakening will have been of little consequence. In the absence of that critical clearing process our awakening is reduced to becoming a pleasant memory of an important event that happened long ago and which we presently cannot quite remember or explain. The movement toward abidance in, and embodiment as the Living Truth is what authentic spirituality is really all about. The articles in this book are written predominantly for those already in the post-awakening state. However, many of the challenges and difficulties we face in the earlier levels of awakening will be familiar to any earnest seeker presently in the pre-awakened state. Regardless of whether you are a seeker, or a finder, you'll find aid and comfort here from someone who's helped many hundreds of clients and students around the world.FRED DAVIS studied and practiced Eastern wisdom for twenty-five years prior to 2006, when seeking ended, and true awakening commenced. In recent years he's become a student of ancient Western philosophy as well. He is the creator and editor of AwakeningClarityNow.com, and the founder of The Living Method of Awakening. Fred is also the author of the nondual bestsellers, The Book of Undoing, Book of Unknowing, and Beyond Recovery: Nonduality and the Twelve Steps. He conducts both public and private sessions online via Skype and Zoom.
