Book The History of Aberdeen Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Aberdeen Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Walter Thom and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Aberdeen, Vol. 1 of 2 The utility of topographical history is generally acknowledge. It is composed chiefly of local facts, and minute details relative to men and manners, which form valuable materials for the antiquary and national historian. But the authors of such works can lay little claim to that merit which is the basis of literary reputation, as their labours are of an humble cast, and require only the exertion of industry. Without presuming, therefore, to solicit any higher title than that of a collector and compiler, the writer of these volumes only expects, that his pretensions to impartiality, both as to his statements and deductions, will not be disputed. He can assure the public, that he has not been in any respect influenced by party prejudices; and while he has avoided whatever might prove a just ground of offence, he has manifested no desire to court the favour of those in power. He is aware that candour and impartiality are the first qualifications of an author; and he trusts that the pages of this work will evince his adherence to these principles. Book excerpt: This volume, the earlier of the two-volume official History of Aberdeen, provides a comprehensive picture of the development of the two historic burghs of Old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen over their first seven centuries, from 1100 to 1800. As early as the 14th century, Aberdeen was: recognized as one of the 'four great towns of Scotland'. Early settlement, the growing townscape and social change over the centuries are all traced. Aberdeen's contacts with the sea and other towns overseas and its economy and politics, both local and national, are assessed. And Aberdonians themselves, the vital forces behind the history of the two burghs, are highlighted: their faith and culture, homes and health, and their education and pastimes are all rediscovered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Aberdeen Case There is reason to believe that the merits of this Case are very imperfectly understood by many persons whose opinions in regard to it are held with much tenacity of feeling, and expressed with a corresponding warmth of language. That this should be the case is almost inevitable. The initial obstacles in the way of reaching a sound, unprejudiced conclusion were numerous, and like difficulties are becoming more numerous and perplexing, as time passes and the contest thickens. Let us try to exhibit some of these, without saying anything that might be deemed personal, or likely to give offence to reasonable minds. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of Old Aberdeen, 1157-1891, Vol. 1 The religious and educational interests centred in the Old Town have in a measure thrust the civil institutions and life of the people into the background, and though these latter may not relatively compare in importance with the two former, yet the life within the Bishop's burgh, far from being uninteresting and uninstructive, is capable Of adding much to our knowledge of the conditions of society in a past age, and of setting before us old customs and usages not now in practice. The almost perfect freedom exercised by the burgesses in all their affairs during the period covered by the extant minutes of the Council is a noteworthy fact. With few exceptions the minutes of the Town Council might be those Of any Royal Burgh, so free were the burghal institutions from the control of the Bishop as lord superior. Book The Countess of Erroll

Download or read book The Countess of Erroll written by Ed. D Edwards and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey encapsulates a three year mystery that began in Edinburgh, Scotland in October 2006 in which I was led by a variety of mysterious historical symbols to learn about the life and challenges of Lady Mary Hay in Cruden Bay, Scotland, who was the 14th Countess of Errol during the years of 1711-1758. Mary Hay was the Senior Great Officer, Royal Office of Scotland and Chief of the King's Household in Scotland. She succeeded to the title in 1717 when she became Lady Hay and Baroness of Stain, 23rd Chief of the Hays (since 1171) and Mac Garaidh Mhar (a Celtic title). In 1727 she nominated John Duke of Roxburgh, to act as Her Deputy and walk in the procession for the coronation of George II. In 1745 she raised an army of Buchan men who stood for "Bonnie Prince Charlie"-Prince Charles Edward Stuart. She was close to sixty years of age at the time. At this time, Mary was a practicing Episcopalian and as this faith was persecuted by the Hanoverians she fitted out a grain store as a place of worship. This was known in Cruden Bay as `Countess Mary's Girnal'. It was burnt to the ground in 1746 by English Dragoons. She succeeded her brother, Charles Hay, and was succeeded by grandnephew Lord James Boyd Kilmarnock, the grandson of her late sister Margaret.
