Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The origin of the banana, probably in Malaysia predates written language. Spaniards transported the first banana root to the New World in 1516 in the hands of a missionary. The banana is low in fat and calories, high in carbohydrate, and used in many diets for newborns, geriatrics, diabetics, and overweights. It has vitamins (C and B6) and minerals (calcium, niacin, iron, phosphorus and lots of potassium) and comes prepacked by nature. The banana appeared in art as long as 5000 years ago, in bas-relief and fresco. It has been immortalized in song, poem, book, movie, paper currency and poster. The banana plant is an herb which can grow to 40 feet; some varieties grow as much as 8 inches in 24 hours. The fruit is borne in bunches which grow upward from the pseudo stem, and the fruit is not really a fruit but a berry! The banana is related to the palm, lily and orchid. Every aspect of the banana is interesting: its use as a tan shoe polish; creation of the first banana daiquiri; its cultivation; its political impact; its economic importance; and its culinary versatility.

In this captivating mystery that's perfect for fans of Knives Out, Senior Investigator Shana Merchant discovers that murder is a family affair. Thirteen months ago, former NYPD detective Shana Merchant barely survived being abducted by a serial killer. Now hoping to leave grisly murder cases behind, she's taken a job in her fiancé's sleepy hometown in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York. But as a nor'easter bears down on her new territory, Shana and fellow investigator Tim Wellington receive a call about a man missing on a private island. Shana and Tim travel to the isolated island owned by the wealthy Sinclair family to question the witnesses. They arrive to find blood on the scene and a house full of Sinclair family and friends on edge. While Tim guesses they're dealing with a runaway case, Shana is convinced that they have a murder on their hands. As the gale intensifies outside, she starts conducting interviews and discovers the Sinclairs and their guests are crawling with dark and dangerous secrets. Trapped on the island by the raging storm with only Tim whose reliability is thrown into question, the increasingly restless suspects, and her own trauma-fueled flashbacks for company, Shana will have to trust the one person her abduction destroyed her faith in—herself. But time is ticking down, because if Shana's right, a killer is in their midst and as the pressure mounts, so do the odds that they'll strike again.

Book A Fatal Inheritance

Download or read book A Fatal Inheritance written by Lawrence Ingrassia and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving his own moving family story with a sweeping history of cancer research, Lawrence Ingrassia delivers an intimate, gripping tale that sits at the intersection of memoir and medical thriller Ingrassia lost his mother, two sisters, brother, and nephew to cancer—different cancers developing at different points throughout their lives. And while highly unusual, his family is not the only one to wonder whether their heartbreak is the result of unbelievable bad luck, or if there might be another explanation. Through meticulous research and riveting storytelling, Ingrassia takes us from the 1960s—when Dr. Frederick Pei Li and Dr. Joseph Fraumeni Jr. first met, not yet knowing that they would help make a groundbreaking discovery that would affect cancer patients for decades to come—to present day, as Ingrassia and countless others continue to unpack and build upon Li and Fraumeni’s initial discoveries, and to understand what this means for their families. In the face of seemingly unbearable loss, Ingrassia holds onto hope. He urges us to “fight like Charlie,” his nephew who battled cancer his entire life starting with a rare tumor in his cheek at the age of two—and to look toward the future, as gene sequencing, screening protocols, CRISPR gene editing, and other developing technologies may continue to extend lifespans and perhaps, one day, even offer cures.

Book excerpt: FASCINATING NOVEL EXPLORES JESUS AND MARY’S CONTROVERSIAL BOND THROUGH THE LENSES OF CULTURAL, SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXTS. Mary Magdalene and Jesus of Nazareth’s mysterious, legendary connection can only be realized by revisiting their story through its Greco-Roman, Mediterranean cultural context. Early theologians censored details about theater, literature, dress, cuisine, wedding rituals, glass manufacturing, silk trade, politics and architecture of Mary Magdalene’s time when they did not fit dogma and doctrine. Cultural Historian Carol Aldenhoven McKay retrieves these lost frameworks as the story line follows McKay’s meticulous reconstruction of a formerly forgotten way of life. Blood and Silk: The Hidden Love Story of Mary Magdalene and Jesus of Nazareth is a novel fifteen years in the making.

Book Mighty Judgment

Download or read book Mighty Judgment written by Philip Slayton and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mighty Judgment Philip Slayton describes the important issues the Supreme Court decides for individual Canadians and for Canada as a nation, and the surprising and dramatic ways in which these decisions shape our future. In the Morgentaler case (1988), the court struck down laws restricting abortion, leaving Canada the only Western country without any abortion laws. In the Same-Sex Marriage Reference (2004), it decided that gays and lesbians could marry. In the Secession Reference (1998), it laid down the conditions under which Quebec could secede from Canada. In the Patrick case (2009), the court decided that the right of privacy does not stop the police from rifling through our garbage. More recently, the court administered a tongue-lashing to the federal government over its treatment of Canadian youth Omar Khadr, accused by the United States government of fighting with the Taliban. Mighty Judgment makes clear that the Supreme Court of Canada is a political institution, and that judges are politicians. But unlike other politicians, judges cannot be voted out of office. Slayton discusses reforms that will be needed, particularly in the way judges are chosen, once we recognize that the court decides policy and plays a pivotal role in governing Canada.

But everything has a price. Book Children of Coyote Missionaries of Saint Francis

Download or read book Children of Coyote Missionaries of Saint Francis written by Steven W. Hackel and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recovering lost voices and exploring issues intimate and institutional, this sweeping examination of Spanish California illuminates Indian struggles against a confining colonial order and amidst harrowing depopulation. To capture the enormous challenges Indians confronted, Steven W. Hackel integrates textual and quantitative sources and weaves together analyses of disease and depopulation, marriage and sexuality, crime and punishment, and religious, economic, and political change. As colonization reduced their numbers and remade California, Indians congregated in missions, where they forged communities under Franciscan oversight. Yet missions proved disastrously unhealthful and coercive, as Franciscans sought control over Indians' beliefs and instituted unfamiliar systems of labor and punishment. Even so, remnants of Indian groups still survived when Mexican officials ended Franciscan rule in the 1830s. Many regained land and found strength in ancestral cultures that predated the Spaniards' arrival. At this study's heart are the dynamic interactions in and around Mission San Carlos Borromeo between Monterey region Indians (the Children of Coyote) and Spanish missionaries, soldiers, and settlers. Hackel places these local developments in the context of the California mission system and draws comparisons between California and other areas of the Spanish Borderlands and colonial America. Concentrating on the experiences of the Costanoan and Esselen peoples during the colonial period, Children of Coyote concludes with an epilogue that carries the story of their survival to the present day.
