Book Abdullah Mubarak Al Sabah

Download or read book Abdullah Mubarak Al Sabah written by Souad M. Al-Sabah and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheikh Mubarak was the founder of the modern state of Kuwait. But the man who actually led Kuwait to modernity was his son Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah, one of the most significant figures of Kuwait from the 1940s to Kuwaiti independence in 1961. Largely responsible for the creation of the Kuwaiti defence forces, Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah made a point of prioritising what he saw to be Kuwait's national interests in the face of British, American and Iranian pressures during a crucial period of change. He developed carefully crafted, cautious relations with foreign oil companies and secured Kuwait's economic standing through his driven and single-minded policies. The author here presents this part-biography, part-history of modern Kuwait, with fresh new research and insights. From America's drive to build stronger connections in the region in the 1950s, when both the Cold War and Arab nationalisms were in full play, to sensitive diplomatic issues such as water, border disputes and difficult interactions with Iraq, especially following the 1958 revolution of Abd al-Karim Qasim, the author examines Kuwait's relations with its neighbours and the West, and the role played by this pivotal figure in the country's history and development. This book makes a significant contribution to understanding the complex politics of modern Kuwait and the recent history of the Gulf States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amidst political upheaval and the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the State of Kuwait emerged as an independent country under British protection in 1899, with Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah widely accredited as the instrument of its foundation. But the path to power for Mubarak was not a simple or smooth one. The author here presents an original perspective on the difficulties and controversies surrounding Mubarak's ascension. With unparalleled insights and access to original sources she reveals the life, personality and politics of a man who, determined to secure a distinctive Kuwaiti state, helped to shape the modern Middle East. This biography provides a comprehensive overview of a time of significant political and social change in the Gulf when development, diplomacy, economics, finance and trade were both routes to political independence and the perpetuation of British domination. Remembered for his unyielding determination to boost the profile and wealth of Kuwait and establish his leadership at a turbulent time of regional war, Mubarak engineered major change for Kuwait. From the negotiations of the 1899 Anglo-Kuwait Agreement, during which Mubarak sought to outfox Lord Curzon and other British officials, to his ambitions to tame tribal politics, the author here presents a unique portrait of the man who transformed Kuwait from an Ottoman sub-province to an independent state.

Book Sabah Al Salim Al Sabah

Download or read book Sabah Al Salim Al Sabah written by Robert L. Jarman and published by Arabian Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Sabah al-Salim Al- Sabah assesses his contribution to the political history of Kuwait. Relying on documents from the British and US archives, as well as frank reminiscences of former colleagues within Kuwait, it covers his entire career, from his entry into public life in 1939, to his reign as Amir from 1965 to 1977. In domestic affairs, particular attention is paid to his growing public stature through the 1950s and early 1960s, leading to his appointment in 1962 as Kuwait's first-ever Crown Prince. His handling of the 131 constitutional crisis of 1964-5, when the National Assembly challenged the ruling family for the first time, is described in detail, drawing on participants' reminiscences as well as reports by foreign diplomats. In external affairs, Sabah al-Salim's attitude towards the Palestinian issue and his contribution to the stabilization of relations with Iraq are extensively documented. He masterminded the secret negotiations in 1962-3 which resulted in Iraq's acceptance of the independence and borders of Kuwait. The full story of these is told here for the first time in English, as is his handling of the subsequent 1973 crisis in Kuwait-Iraq relations. Britain's withdrawal from the Gulf in 1968-71 necessitated a fundamental rethink of Kuwait's foreign policy, and Sabah al-Salim's leading role in Kuwait's realignment towards the USA is documented in full.

Book Stateless in the Gulf

Download or read book Stateless in the Gulf written by Claire Beaugrand and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kuwaiti population includes around 100,000 people - approximately 10 per cent of the Kuwaiti nationals -whose legal status is contested. Often considered `stateless', they have come to be known in Kuwait as biduns, from `bidun jinsiyya', which means literally `without nationality' in Arabic. As long-term residents with close geographical ties and intimate cultural links to the emirate, the biduns claim that they are entitled to Kuwaiti nationality because they have no other. But since 1986 the State of Kuwait, has considered them `illegal residents' on Kuwaiti territory. As a result, the biduns have been denied civil and human rights and treated as undocumented migrants, with no access to employment, health, education or official birth and death certificates. It was only after the first-ever bidun protest in 2011, that the government softened restrictions imposed upon them. Claire Beaugrand argues here that, far from being an anomaly, the position of the biduns is of central importance to the understanding of state formation processes in the Gulf countries, and the ways in which identity and the boundaries of nationality are negotiated and concretely enacted.

Book Mubarak Al Sabah

Download or read book Mubarak Al Sabah written by B. Slot and published by Arabian Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mubarak Al-Sabah took control of his tiny state in 1896, just as the Ottoman Empire seemed on the point of swallowing it up. He then played for time by manipulating the indecision and venality of the Ottoman system. At the same time he managed to kindle a hesitant British interest in Kuwait, doing so by deftly exploiting a rivalry among European powers that was fuelled by speculation over Kuwait's strategic importance as the possible terminus of a railway - conceived as the vital link in rapid communication between Europe and India.

Book Stories of Democracy

Download or read book Stories of Democracy written by Mary Ann Tétreault and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sophisticated investigation of the shifting tides of democratic governance in modern Kuwait from 1921 to the present based on interviews both with political activists and members of the political elite, Stories of Democracy sheds light on a wide array of issues concerning Middle Eastern politics and democratic institutions in general. Mary Ann Tétreault explores how various political factions have sought to advance their own notions of Kuwaiti history and politics through distinctive popular appeals: (1) pro-democracy forces focusing on Kuwait's relationship to the universal values of the democratic world around them, and (2) anti-democrats proffering Arab and Muslim religious and cultural traditions. She explores how such dramatic events as the suspension of the Kuwaiti constitution in 1986 and the invasion by Iraq in 1990 occasioned major shifts in the course of the democracy movement. The current running through virtually all of the nation's political drama is the monolithic Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), used by the government as an instrument of economic strength to safeguard sovereignty in the absence of military might.

Book The Making of the Gulf War

Download or read book The Making of the Gulf War written by H. Rahman and published by Ithaca Press (GB). This book was released on 1997 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuwait's long-standing territorial dispute with Iraq, culminating in the 1991 Gulf War, should properly be viewed within an extended historical context dating back to the Ottoman period. Tracing the origins of this dispute through a detailed chronological account of events, Dr Rahman describes how Anglo-Ottoman manoeuvres in the 1890s were to have repercussions on Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations for generations to come. He considers the effect of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent redefinition of many of the boundaries of the Empire's former provinces in the Middle East. Mesopotamia, now Iraq, became a kingdom under British mandate, and in 1932 it attained independence.
