Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protagoras of Abdera, Socrates’ older contemporary, is regarded as one of the most prominent representatives of the so-called sophistic movement. Instead of simply accepting the biased reports given by Plato and Aristotle about this sophist, the contributors to this volume review the complicated doxographical situation and make a case for Protagoras as a philosopher in his own right. Two major themes of this volume are Protagoras’ relativism and his case for a moral and political ideal, both of which are contrasted with the metaphysical idealism of his future opponents in the Academy and the mundane conventionalism typically associated with the sophists. It turns out that rather than a parasitic force of intellectual subversion, Protagoras may have been a prolific and original thinker aiming at a coherent and comprehensive view of man’s place in the world.

Book excerpt: The rich and varied epigraphic record of the city of Teos in northern Ionia has been dramatically enriched by recent excavations at the site, conducted since 2010 under the aegis of the University of Ankara. Over the past decade, the number of known inscriptions from Teos has increased from c. 300 to c. 500, and every season's campaign brings significant new finds. The most remarkable document discovered in recent years is a long honorific decree of Abdera for the dēmos of Teos, dating to the mid-160s BC (Chapter 1, Document 1). The new inscription invites a reassessment of the uniquely close relationship between Teos and her daughter-city Abdera over a period of almost four centuries, from the original Teian settlement at Abdera in the 540s BC to the Roman sack of Abdera in 170 BC and its aftermath. We hope that readers will share our excitement in retracing the long shared history of Teos and Abdera, in times of both peace and war

Book Roman Pottery in Context

Download or read book Roman Pottery in Context written by Vaitsa Malamidou and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the evidence for internal and external cultural influences in north-eastern Greece, examined through ceramic assemblages of the Roman period found near Amphipolis, Philippi, Kepia, Abdera and Thasos. The typology is based on analysis of the stratigraphy where the pottery was found, and on non-ceramic material, such as coins, inscriptions and architectural members, and the chronology is supported by identifiable imported pottery found elsewhere. The fine pottery is arranged according to type: Terra Sigillata wares, Red Slip wares and other minor groups such as Macedonia Grey and Glazed pottery. The coarse wares are classified, arranged according to their fabric, shape, and function. Along with the catalogue is a discussion of the ceramic types, their quantity and chronology. Finally, through the results of this study, the wider area of north-eastern Macedonia and Thrace is re-examined with attention to cultural influences during the Roman period.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward Schiappa
  • Publisher : Univ of South Carolina Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781570035210
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Protagoras and Logos written by Edward Schiappa and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reassesses the philosophical and pedagogical contributions of Protagoras Protagoras and Logos brings together in a meaningful synthesis the contributions and rhetoric of the first and most famous of the Older Sophists, Protagoras of Abdera. Most accounts of Protagoras rely on the somewhat hostile reports of Plato and Aristotle. By focusing on Protagoras's own surviving words, this study corrects many long-standing misinterpretations and presents significant facts: Protagoras was a first-rate philosophical thinker who positively influenced the theories of Plato and Aristotle, and Protagoras pioneered the study of language and was the first theorist of rhetoric. In addition to illustrating valuable methods of translating and reading fifth-century B.C.E. Greek passages, the book marshals evidence for the important philological conclusion that the Greek word translated as rhetoric was a coinage by Plato in the early fourth century. In this second edition, Edward Schiappa reassesses the philosophical and pedagogical contributions of Protagoras. Schiappa argues that traditional accounts of Protagoras are hampered by mistaken assumptions about the Sophists and the teaching of the art of rhetoric in the fifth century. He shows that, contrary to tradition, the so-called Older Sophists investigated and taught the skills of logos, which is closer to modern conceptions of critical reasoning than of persuasive oratory. Schiappa also offers interpretations for each of Protagoras's major surviving fragments and examines Protagoras's contributions to the theory and practice of Greek education, politics, and philosophy. In a new afterword Schiappa addresses historiographical issues that have occupied scholars in rhetorical studies over the past ten years, and throughout the study he provides references to scholarship from the last decade that has refined his views on Protagoras and other Sophists.
