Book Principles of Poultry Science

Download or read book Principles of Poultry Science written by S. P. Rose and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poultry are farmed and are important sources of protein throughout the world. All students of agriculture are likely to be required to study poultry science to at least an introductory level. However, hitherto there has been no suitable textbook serving the needs of students taking a general introductory course in poultry science. This book aims to fill this gap. It explains the science underlying the productive processes of growth, reproduction and incubation. The applications of nutrition and breeding techniques are described. The book covers all the commercially important poultry species, including turkeys, quail, guinea fowls, ducks and geese, but the main emphasis is on the domestic fowl. The overall purpose is to provide the student with an understanding of the characteristics and physiological responses of domesticated poultry, with particular reference to production. The emphasis is on modeling responses rather than on biochemical and hormonal processes. The author stresses basic concepts and models, rather than practical production systems, so that the book should have worldwide applicability. The book represents a key text for degree and advanced diploma courses in agriculture.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ...pullets on a consistent 60 per cent lay eat approximately in one year: 15 pounds dry oats before sprouting. 30 pounds corn and wheat scratch. 25 pounds mash including both dry and wet. 18 quarts milk. 4 pounds shell. 26 pounds kale. The heavy breeds when held to their maximum lay will eaeh eat in one year: 19 pounds dry oats, germinated. 36 pounds corn and wheat scratch. 18 quarts milk. 22 pounds dry mash, including the wet mash. 31/2 pounds shell. 26 pounds kale besides the green pasture and lawn clippings. We were very glad of the opportunity to make these accurate computations on a rather large number of birds of many different breeds, a11d were surprised that the old text book amounts of 25 pounds each of oats, grain and mash did not coincide with the actual consumption. The flock records made in the second contest, November 1st, 1920 to October 31, 1921, will probably stand for some time to come. The weather was ideal and the succulent green food supply was unfailing. The Leghorn entries had a large percentage of pens from a few of the most expert breeders and pickers of layers which this old world has ever produced. Everything was favorable for maximum production. There are a few individuals in the present contest and perhaps three pens which are still possible record makers. but it now appears that we have approached the maximum possibilities of flock production as birds are now bred, until more efiicient equipment and more scientific distribution of the necessary feeds is developed by perhaps some member of the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF POUL'l'R'.'
