Book excerpt: FROM POPULAR ROMANCE AUTHOR ROXANNE BLACKHALL Book two in the Bristol Park series Pair a biology teacher with a coach and a struggling student athlete for one explosive game of chemistry. Gina Tellis is happy with her single life. She loves her job as a high school biology teacher in the Catskills town of Abbeydon and doesn' t need a man telling her what to do. Her routine gets turned on its head when the school hires a new coach who is too hot for words, but she' s content to admire from afar. She' s got zero interest in some former sports star. Brandon Waters is trying to rebuild his life after an injury took him out of hockey forever. He came to Abbeydon to escape the constant pressure and attention, but small-town life has its own challenges— like everybody knowing your business. He didn' t count on meeting a woman who pushes all of his happy buttons. He sure as hell didn' t count on falling for her. Then Gina notices the school' s star quarterback is struggling with his classes and she pits herself against the typical academics versus sports power struggle to help her student. She finds a surprising ally in Brandon, and chemistry simmers as the two work together to help the young player. Their budding relationship gets sidelined by her biases against sports and his fears of his continued struggles to deal with the lasting impact of his injuries. Brandon will need to open up and let Gina help him, but first, she needs to accept the teacher and the jock can work together.

Sparks fly, but neither of them wants anything meaningful. Until they do and everything changes. Stacy Barclay needs this ski weekend with her best friends, badly. It' s the perfect chance to relax with her besties and recharge so she can squash the competition for the associate position at the investment firm where she works. Luke originally came to Abbeydon for a break, but the charm of the small town had him taking a ski-guide job and staying. Stacy is fun to flirt with, but that' s as far as he' ll let it go. He' s already dealt with heartbreak once and has no plans to revisit. His heart is safely locked in ice that never melts, but something about Bristol Park, and Stacy, is chipping away at his resolve to stay emotionally detached. Then they get stuck in a remote cabin together and things begin to heat up, tempting them both to abandon themselves to love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM EXCITING ROMANCE AUTHOR ROXANNE BLACKHALL Book one in the Logan County Love series Homecomings should be about family and rekindled romance, not arson and murder. ATF Fire Investigator, Drea Hidalgo, loved her action-filled job in Washington, DC, until a house fire almost consumed her, and she was forced to transfer to teaching. For years, Drea avoided the small, nosy town where she grew up, but after her grandfather suffers a heart attack, she has to go back. When she finds out he has advanced lung cancer, she stays to care for him. Now, she's stuck in a town that harbors too many uncomfortable memories, including ones of Danny Parsons— her first love, and her first heartbreak. Danny Parsons had his own dreams. A football scholarship offered a chance at a different life with Drea, but when his older brother skipped town, leaving Danny as the only child to continue the family ranch, he had to choose between love and duty. Since then, he's been using the steady hands and level head of his quarterbacking days to develop and expand the family business. The quiet contentment of that work is disrupted when Drea— the only woman he's ever loved— steps back into his world. When a series of deadly fires rocks the town, Drea's professional instincts kick in, but the local police don't want her help. Drea is torn between catching a killer, caring for her grandfather, and her rekindled relationship with Danny.

Book Chronology of the Evolution Creationism Controversy

Download or read book Chronology of the Evolution Creationism Controversy written by Randy Moore and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique chronology with entries describing the key events in the 3,000-year conflict between religion and science over the explanation and definition of life on Earth. Exhaustively researched and authoritative, Chronology of the Evolution-Creationism Controversy does what no other work does: it examines the conflict between the religious and scientific views of life on Earth in its full 3,000-year historical context, showing readers how this roiling debate has played out over the centuries. With hundreds of entries, Chronology of the Evolution-Creationism Controversy describes specific cultural, religious, and scientific events relevant to the evolution-creationism controversy from the first notions of creationism in ancient Egypt to the present. Within this historical approach, it identifies a number of recurring themes that have shaped the debate through the ages, including famous court cases, the recurrence of the "intelligent design" argument, disagreements over the age of the Earth, and the impact of technological advances on both the scientific and faith-based viewpoints. While approaching the subject globally throughout, the book's second half focuses on tensions between science and religious thought in the United States since the early 1900s.

Book The Frame and the Mirror

  • Author : Thomas P. Brockelman
  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780810117754
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book The Frame and the Mirror written by Thomas P. Brockelman and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the postmodern is a collage--as some critics have suggested--or if collage is itself a kernel of the postmodern, what does this mean for our way of understanding the world? The Frame and the Mirror uses this question to probe the distinctive character of the postmodern situation and the philosophical problem of representation. Brockelman's work is itself a collage of sorts, using juxtapositions of critics and art historical figures to conduct a debate between such figures as Karsten Harries, Gianni Vattimo, Rosalind Krauss, Immanuel Kant, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Slavo Zizek, and Le Corbusier about issues such as truth in art, perspectivism, theatricality, the sublime, psychoanalytic theory, politics, and urbanism. More than an introduction to the postmodern, The Frame and the Mirror advances our understanding of the contemporary world by relating its features to the peculiar characteristics of collage. Ultimately, Brockelman shows how collage demands that we reinterpret modernity, conceiving of it as suspended between a loss of certainty and a new kind of knowledge about the human condition. In doing so, his work challenges many of the claims made in the name of postmodernism--and offers in their place a new and ironic view of the cultural space in which contemporary and historical events occur.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Journal of Rachel Van Dyke," a compelling primary document previously unpublished, offers insights into the life and mind of a seventeen-year-old young woman, while also providing a fascinating window into the cultural and social landscape of the early national period. Rachel was a thoughtful, intelligent, observer, and her journal is an important account of upper- and middle-class life in the growing city of New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her entries reveal her remarkably studied views on social customs, marriage, gender roles, friendship, and religion. The journal is dominated by two interrelated themes: Rachel's desire to broaden her knowledge and her friendship with her teacher, Ebenezer Grosvenor. Since Ebenezer was both her teacher and her romantic interest, it is impossible to distinguish between the themes of education and romance that dominate her writings. On several occasions, Rachel and Ebenezer exchanged their private journals with each other. During these exchanges, Ebenezer added comments in the margins of Rachel's journal, producing areas of written "conversation" between them. The marginalia adds to the complexity of the journal and provides evidence of and insight into Rachel's romantic and intellectual relationship with him. The written interactions between Rachel and Ebenezer, together with discussions of friendship and courtship rituals provided throughout the journal, enrich our understanding of social life during the early national period. To Read My Heart will be of interest to students of American history, women's studies, and nineteenth-century literature; all readers will be captivated by the rich expression and emotional experience of the journal. Whether she is relating the story of a young friend's wedding, the death of a small boy, or the capture of a slave in Guinea, Rachel's pages have universal appeal as she seeks to understand her own role as an emerging adult.
