Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Southern California, settlers have long ventured into the Mojave Desert, seduced by its capacious horizons and fragile beauty, only to be abased by the intense heat, bone-dry terrain and maddening isolation. Industry, intent on extracting the land of its essence, set up operations, then walked away when there was nothing left worth taking. Civilization has always pushed into the frontier, and quite often the frontier pushes back. Areas like the forsaken homesteads of Wonder Valley and the abandoned mining operations of Joshua Tree seem simultaneously depleted yet majestically audacious in their quiet desolation, juxtaposed against the breathtaking landscapes of the desert. Abandoned California: The Mojave Desert is a collection of photographs and writings by Andy Willinger that capture the majesty of these forsaken buildings, vehicles and artifacts of the Mojave's once vibrant past. These sites have become meaningful, unintended statements - not only as vibrant, ephemeral artworks of minimal beauty, but as testament to the impact on nature by humanity. Undaunted, the Mojave Desert continues to brashly flaunt its skill in overcoming man's attempts to conquer it.

Book Castaways Adrift and Abandoned

Download or read book Castaways Adrift and Abandoned written by Graham Faiella and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafaring before the twentieth century bristled with peril. The safe haven of your vessel might be destroyed by tempest or misadventure, your security scuttled. When you were cast away with only the resources of pluck, stamina, hope – and luck. Where you might end up on the expanse of endless sea facing the prospect of imminent dehydrated, starving death. Or on a safe but potentially forbidding – yet occasionally lush – outcrop of an isolated shore, amongst which perils abounded accounts of courage and companionship. These are narratives of castaways abandoned to fend for themselves, and the ordeals they endured and survived and in remembrance of the seafarers who did not.

Book Hidden Warships

Download or read book Hidden Warships written by Nicholas A. Veronico and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photo-filled tour of wrecked warships around the world, with their stories recounted in “a wonderfully clear [and] lively style” (Seattle Post Intelligencer). Sunk by enemy fire, scuttled, or run aground, the number of World War II-era battleships, cruisers, submarines, and other warships that ended their service on the bottom of the world’s oceans and seas is enormous. In the decades since the conflict, wreck hunters have pored over historical records and combed the world’s oceans to find their remains. Now you too can see them up close—without getting your feet wet. In Hidden Warships, naval historian Nicholas A. Veronico details the history, recovery, and preservation of these sunken combat ships—including accounts from the divers and restorers who have worked with them. Beginning with the Japanese midget submarines that attacked Pearl Harbor and continuing into the modern era, including the 2006 sinking of the postwar aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, Veronico provides rich detail on each noteworthy vessel, including over 150 photographs, ship specifications, geographic coordinates, and more. For the enthusiast who wants an even more complete experience, the book concludes with a list of preserved ships, an Internet resource guide, and a suggested reading list to continue the exploration. Whether you plan on visiting these historic sites yourself or simply enjoy their compelling stories, Hidden Warships will guide you, above the surface and underwater, through some of the most famous relics of World War II naval warfare. “A tantalizing selection of sunken vessels, including many recent discoveries.” —Naval History Magazine

Book The Abandoned Country Annotated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an annotated version of the book 1. contains an updated biography of the author at the end of the book for a better understanding of the text. 2. This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errors "So you think the earth has been thoroughly explored, and that there is no such thing as an undiscovered continent, do you?" asked Percy Randall, as he lit a cigar and seated himself comfortably in a chair in the office of Frank Reade, Jr., for a social chat. The young inventor, who hardly needs an introduction to the reader, so well is he known the world over, turned from his desk and regarded his visitor with a quizzical smile. "Still at that old theory, Randall?" he said. "I thought you had discarded it after that last expedition of yours." Randall, a bronzed, athletic man of thirty years, but with heaps of experience as a globe-trotter and explorer, winced, but replied lightly: "Well, I did have a hard time. We lost our ship in Desolation Channel, and were forced to take to an iceberg. If we had had an overland machine like your Electric Scorcher, we could have easily crossed that ice barrier and set foot upon the new continent, the most wonderful part of the globe. But as it was we were carried north into Cape Horn waters on the berg and finally picked up by an Argentine vessel." Frank looked interested. "Then you really believe that there is an inhabited and undiscovered continent beyond that ice barrier?" he asked. "Why, I have old Jack Wendel's word for it." "A sailor's word is good except when connected with a story. The telling of a yarn is ample license for stretching the imagination." "Very good," rejoined Randall, "but old Jack has given his davy on it, and all sorts of oaths. Oh, I firmly believe him." "I would much like to hear his story," said Frank. "You would?" asked Randall, eagerly. "Yes." "Then you shall. I brought him here to-day for that purpose. He is just outside the door. I will call him." Randall opened the office door and called: "Wendel, come in here!" The next moment there appeared in the doorway the figure of a sailor of the old-time type, who spliced the mainbrace and made sennit in the forecastle in the palmy days of the "tea wagons" and seventy-four gun frigates. Jack Wendel pulled his foretop respectfully before Frank, and said: "With submission, sir, just come aboard, and at your service!" "Glad to meet you, sir!" said Frank, warmly. "Sit down. My friend here tells me that you have a wonderful yarn to tell." Wendel shot a shrewd glance at Frank, then said: "It is not a yarn, skipper. It is a true story, on my honor!" "Very good," said Frank. "I should be glad to have you repeat it to me." "And you, sir?" Wendel looked at Randall, who said: "Certainly, Jack: fire away." The old salt clasped his hands over his knees and began: "It was in '53, and I went out from Baltimore in the Mary Luce. Captain Barnaby, for Peru. There never was a stauncher ship, mates, nor the Luce. She stood up like a church in a running gale, and it was no light storm that put her under the rollers. "Well, we were forty-three souls aboard-crew, officers, and a few passengers. We had a lucky voyage all the way across the Equator and down the coast until we struck ther Horn seas. Then there was the Old Harry to pay. "We hit into a south storm, and for four days we were unable to tell where we were. The seas came aboard like avalanches and cleared the deck to the masts fore and aft. That was a leetle the toughest trip I ever had. And I haven't forgotten it. "Well, the way the wind did howl and the sea run! When at length the sun shone long enough to take an observation our skipper swore that we were south of the Antarctic Circle.

Book The Abandoned Ocean

Download or read book The Abandoned Ocean written by Andrew Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Abandoned Ocean offers an in-depth appraisal of United States maritime policy from the establishment of a merchant marine immediately after the Revolutionary War through radical industry transformations of the late twentieth century. In this sweeping analysis of federal policies that promote, regulate, and subsidize American shipping, Andrew Gibson and Arthur Donovan also examine the closely related fortunes of the shipbuilding industry and the merchant and military navies. The authors consider why, since the middle of the nineteenth century, United States maritime policy has been so strikingly unsuccessful in achieving its goal to promote a commercially viable merchant marine engaged in foreign trade.

Book Legal aspects of abandoned lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear

Download or read book Legal aspects of abandoned lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear written by Hodgson, S. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing quantity of plastic waste in the marine environment including abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) is a global problem. A particular feature of ALDFG is the potential of some gears to carry on fishing for many months or even years. The study examines legal responses to ALDFG in the context of marine fisheries. After discussing the nature of the problem of ALDFG and some of the reasons why fishing gear is abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded, the study examines the response of the international community to ALDFG. A key finding is that ALDFG is at the same time, a fishing issue, a navigation problem (of vessel source pollution) and an environmental problem with the resulting involvement of FAO, IMO and UNEP as well as the UN General Assembly. After examining potential legal approaches to the problem, the study then describes the basic legal and institutional arrangements in four case study jurisdictions that have adopted legal measures to address ALDFG, namely Australia, the European Union and its Member States, Norway and the USA finding once again the tripartite responsibility of fisheries, navigation and environment ministries/agencies. The inter-sectoral nature of ALDFG suggests the need for a collaborative and coordinated approach. While not all of the case study jurisdictions make use of all ten of the individual legal measures identified, the case studies also clearly show that ALDFG is a problem that is susceptible to a legal response at the national or regional level including through the use of extended producer responsibility schemes, various reporting requirements and gear standards. Legal tools to address the problem of ALDFG clearly exist. The extent to which some, or all, of them are necessary or appropriate in a given context at national, regional or global level is not ultimately a legal question but a political one.

Book How to Abandon Ship

Download or read book How to Abandon Ship written by Phil Richards and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on interviews with the crew and captain of a torpedoed tanker who survived nineteen days in a lifeboat in heavy seas and scorching tropical sun—this information is incredibly useful even today. How to Abandon Ship was written during World War II to save the lives of seamen by instilling a commonsense, organized, no-panic clarity to getting off torpedoed ships safely and, perhaps more importantly, surviving later. It is a gem that can once again be used to save lives. Former schooner captain and author Twain Braden updates this solid and useful advice with a foreword addressing today’s technology. Braden used How to Abandon Ship to teach crewmembers fifty years after it was written while sailing the rugged and dangerous Maine coast. The writing in How to Abandon Ship is so clear it has been used in college English composition classes. You will find vivid and pertinent information on everything from medical emergencies, thirst, and hunger to weather and morale. It pulls no punches, and its advice is strident but useful. In the words of the authors: “This manual is concerned solely with human lives. Its purpose is to aid you to get off a sinking ship and to eventual safety in the best condition possible.” Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable World War II account of a maritime attack off the West African coast, for fans of Steven Sheinkin and Deborah Heiligman. At the height of World War II, the RMS Laconia was torpedoed by a German submarine five hundred miles off the coast of western Africa. The attack triggered a series of unprecedented events involving allies and enemies from both sides, and left survivors adrift at sea in shark infested oceans, fighting to stay alive with little food or water. Suspenseful and informative, and featuring historic photographs, this incredible true account is a testament to the idea that compassion can rule over conflict—even during the cruelties of war. A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection "This epic story races along, unspooling like a movie before our eyes—artfully, dramatically, revealing a little known part of WWII history. An intriguing book."―Doug Stanton, #1 New York Times bestselling author of In Harm’s Way "The authors do an excellent job of conveying the chaos and loss of this grisly historical incident without pushing young readers too deeply into the horror. Many of those who lived through the Laconia catastrophe endured weeks at sea, parched and sunburned and starving in conditions that literally drove men mad. Archival photos add immediacy to this sensational true-life story." ―Wall Street Journal "An amazing account of a World War II event that is almost entirely unknown…. This story chronicles the courage, compassion, and perseverance of the few survivors of the incident, showcasing war at its worst and humanity at its best…. School librarians will want to add this to their collection." ―Booklist

Book excerpt: Sailing across the Pacific, the U.S.S. Indianapolis had just delivered a secret cargo that would trigger the end of WW2. Her captain asked for a destroyer escort, but was told it wasn1t necessary. But she was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese sub. In 12 minutes, 300 men went down with her. More than 900 others spent 5 nights in the ocean with no water to drink, savaged by a pitiless sun and swarms of sharks. Incredibly nobody knew they were out there until a Navy patrol plane discovered them. But, 316 crewmen still survived. This book, originally pub. in 1958, was the first to describe the ordeal the survivors of the disaster endured. This updated ed., with a new intro., supplies the chilling answer to how this disaster could have happened and why. Photos.
