Carrington was ordered into the Powder River and Big Horn countries to build and garrison forts along the Bozeman Trail for the protection of white travelers. His wife Margaret, a dozen officer s wives and eleven children traveled with the troops. Margaret maintained a detailed journal of the day-to-day operations of the men and families of the 2nd Battalion. Encompassing not only the daily life on the plains, it ventures into the conflicts between the Indians (Red Cloud, Chief Spotted Tail) and the white intruders into the Indians hunting grounds. The Indian s defense of their lands in the face of the rush to the Black Hills gold fields escalated until it erupted in the Fetterman Massacre of 1866. It is from Margaret s journals that this book was written as an eyewitness account of incidents that plagued this troubled time. Revised and enlarged to include new information and notes gathered from 10 years after the first edition was printed, this edition is illustrated with maps, woodcuts and Indian portraits. Readers can follow other operations in the valleys of Powder, Tongue, Big Horn and Yellowstone rivers. It includes an Introduction by Colonel Henry B. Carrington, written after his wife s death. Excerpt: ... chapter xxiv. rtrrishan's Massacre--Its Lessons. December, 21st, 1866, was to us the saddest day of the year. Though snow covered the mountains, and there was every indication of the return of severe weather, the morning was quite pleasant. Men only wore blouses at their work, and the train, although much later than usual, went to the Pinery with a strong guard, so that the teamsters, choppers, and escort, all armed, numbered not far from ninety men. The children ran in about 11 o'clock, shouting "Indians!" and the pickets on Pilot Hill could be distinctly seen giving the signal of " many Indians," on the line of the wood road; and news was also furnished that the train was in corral only a short distance from the garrison. The officers and all the ladies were soon watching for other usual demonstrations, while a detail was being organized to relieve the train. Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel Fetterman, then walking back and forth before his quarters, near whero the colonel was giving his instructions, asked and obtained permission to go with the detachment. Lieutenant Grummond, also at his own request, took a part of Company C, 2d United States Cavalry, --making the whole force just seventy-eight officers and men. Captain Brown, unknown to the officers of the garrison, as well as citizens Wheatlcy and Fisher, both experienced frontiersmen and good shots, also joined the party. It was just at the time when a few more trains of saw-logs would furnish ample lumber material to complete tho office building and a fifth company quarters, already well under progress.
