Book Innovative SANEX process for trivalent actinides separation from PUREX raffinate

Download or read book Innovative SANEX process for trivalent actinides separation from PUREX raffinate written by Michał Sypuła and published by Forschungszentrum Jülich. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recycling of nuclear spent fuel and reduction of its radiotoxicity by separation of long-lived radionuclides would definitely help to close the nuclear fuel cycle ensuring sustainability of the nuclear energy. Partitioning of the main radiotoxicity contributors followed by their conversion into short-lived radioisotopes is known as partitioning and transmutation strategy. To ensure efficient transmutation of the separated elements (minor actinides) the content of lanthanides in the irradiation targets has to be minimised. This objective can be attained by solvent extraction using highly selective ligands that are able to separate these two groups of elements from each other. The objective of this study was to develop a novel process allowing co-separation of minor actinides and lanthanides from a high active acidic feed solution with subsequent actinide recovery using just one cycle, so-called innovative SANEX process. The conditions of each step of the process were optimised to ensure high actinide separation efficiency. Additionally, screening tests of several novel lipophilic and hydrophilic ligands provided by University of Twente were performed. These tests were aiming in better understanding the influence of the extractant structural modifications onto An(III)/Ln(III) selectivity and complexation properties. ...

Book A Combinatorial Study of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia as an Electrolyte Candidate for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Download or read book A Combinatorial Study of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia as an Electrolyte Candidate for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells written by Natalie Alexandra Becerra and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial research can have two main uses. The first is to perform cursory measurements of many materials to find a composition whose properties are ideal for some known application. The second function of combinatorial research is to test many materials for ideal values of a particular property in order to learn more about that property and variables that can alter it. This study focused on adequately measuring, modeling and calculating the parameters that affect the ionic conductivity of a particular binary spread of yttria stabilized zirconia. At three separate temperatures, the resulting ionic conductivity vs. composition graphs showed trends similar to those found in the literature for bulk materials, which validate the methods that were developed and optimized in this thesis. Further studies of activation energy and phase structure were performed and produced results that also match data found in the literature. Future work can expand on the methods detailed here and examine other combinations of materials such as zirconia co-doped with yttria and scandia or gadolinium-doped ceria.

Book Dynamics of Glassy Crystalline and Liquid Ionic Conductors

Download or read book Dynamics of Glassy Crystalline and Liquid Ionic Conductors written by Junko Habasaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physics of the dynamics of ions in various ionically conducting materials, and applications including electrical energy generation and storage. The experimental techniques for measurements and characterization, molecular dynamics simulations, the theories of ion dynamics, and applications are all addressed by the authors, who are experts in their fields. The experimental techniques of measurement and characterization of dynamics of ions in glassy, crystalline, and liquid ionic conductors are introduced with the dual purpose of introducing the reader to the experimental activities of the field, and preparing the reader to understand the physical quantities derived from experiments. These experimental techniques include calorimetry, conductivity relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance, light scattering, neutron scattering, and others. Methods of molecular dynamics simulations are introduced to teach the reader to utilize the technique for practical applications to specific problems. The results elucidate the dynamics of ions on some issues that are not accessible by experiments. The properties of ion dynamics in glassy, crystalline and liquid ionic conductors brought forth by experiments and simulations are shown to be universal, i.e. independent of physical and chemical structure of the ionic conductor as long as ion-ion interaction is the dominant factor. Moreover these universal properties of ion dynamics are shown to be isomorphic to other complex interacting systems including the large class of glass-forming materials with or without ionic conductivity.By covering the basic concepts, theories/models, experimental techniques and data, molecular dynamics simulations, and relating them together, Dynamics of Glassy, Crystalline and Liquid Ionic Conductors will be of great interest to many in basic and applied research areas from the broad and diverse communities of condensed matter physicists, chemists, materials scientists and engineers. The book also provides the fundamentals for an introduction to the field and it is written in such a way that can be used for teaching courses either at the undergraduate or graduate level in academic institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main motivation for the organization of the Advanced Research Workshop in Belgirate was the promotion of discussions on the most recent issues and the future perspectives in the field of Solid State lonics. The location was chosen on purpose since Belgirate was the place were twenty years ago, also then under the sponsorship of NATO, the very first international meeting on this important and interdisciplinary field took place. That meeting was named "Fast Ion Transport in Solids" and gathered virtually everybody at that time having been active in any aspect of motion of ions in solids. The original Belgirate Meeting made for the first time visible the technological potential related to the phenomenon of the fast ionic transport in solids and, accordingly, the field was given the name "Solid State lonics". This field is now expanded to cover a wide range of technologies which includes chemical sensors for environmental and process control, electrochromic windows, mirrors and displays, fuel cells, high performance rechargeable batteries for stationary applications and electrotraction, chemotronics, semiconductor ionics, water electrolysis cells for hydrogen economy and other applications. The main idea for holding an anniversary meeting was that of discussing the most recent issues and the future perspectives of Solid State lonics just twenty years after it has started at the same location on the lake Maggiore in North Italy.

Book The Chemical Bond in Inorganic Chemistry

Download or read book The Chemical Bond in Inorganic Chemistry written by Ian David Brown and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the bond valence model, a description of acid-base bonding which is becoming increasingly popular particularly in fields such as materials science and mineralogy where solid state inorganic chemistry is important. Recent improvements in crystal structure determination have allowed the model to become more quantitative. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, and predictive, and can be used for analysing crystal structures and the conceptual modelling of local as well as extended structures. This is the first book to explore in depth the theoretical basis of the model and to show how it can be applied to synthetic and solution chemistry. It emphasizes the separate roles of the constraints of chemistry and of three-dimensional space by analysing the chemistry of solids. Many applications of the model in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy, soil science, surface science, and molecular biology are reviewed. The final chapter describes how the bond valence model relates to and represents a simplification of other models of inorganic chemical bonding.

Book Proceedings of the 9th Asian Conference on Solid State Ionics

Furthermore, solid state ionics is now being combined with the emerging nanotechnology to produce new knowledge and applications. This book covers the following topics: fuel cells and membranes; batteries; sensors and electrochromics; fundamentals of ionic transport and defect chemistry; cation/anion/mixed ionic electronic conductors.
