Book excerpt: Founded over a decade ago, AB Concept has confirmed its position as one of Asia's most ambitious, forward-thinking architectural and design firms. Honoured with an array of international awards, AB Concept has been behind some of the world's most acclaimed executive developments as well as hospitality and residential projects. For the first time in their decade-long history, cofounders Ed Ng and Terence Ngan have compiled their stunning projects into one collection, Language of Luxe by AB Concept. Chronicling their projects over 300 pages, Language of Luxe maps AB Concept's evolution, offering an insight into the team's creative process and artistic vision. As Ed and Terence are authorities in their field, government bodies - including Create HK and Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) - regularly invite them to speak at public forums to promote Hong Kong as a design hub. Innovative and adventurous, Ed and Terence's designs are daring explorations of space and style, each one revealing their genuine respect for history, culture and the arts. Based in Hong Kong and with an office in Bangkok, Ed and Terence are part of a new generation of Asian designers who are bringing a cross-cultural aesthetic to their designs and making an impact on the international scene. Every AB Concept property reflects Ed and Terence's ability to make the elegant look effortless. Driven to create sensual spaces that seamlessly integrate form and function, their style dictum is simple: Understated rather than overkill. As AB Concept's lead architect, Hospitality Design named Terence Ngan as one of its 2010 'Wave of the Future' honorees, acknowledging both the originality of his designs and his technical mastery. For each project, Ed Ng introduces an element of surprise. Whether it's an unexpected use of colour or a modern twist on a classic form, each project tells a new story and evokes a sense of individuality. Together with select residential developments, Language of Luxe captures AB Concept's most acclaimed hospitality projects, including the SPA at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore, the W Retreat & Spa in Bali and Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan.

Book excerpt: This report highlights the accomplishments of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) consultations and round-table discussions on the PMP/AB that were held during 2019. These include the following: (i) the Second Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB2) (29–31 January 2019); (ii) the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB): First Technical Working Group Meeting (TWG1) (20–22 March 2019); and (iii) the Roundtable Discussions on Aquaculture Biosecurity (22–26 July 2019). It reports on the progress made towards formulating, planning and developing implementation mechanisms for the PMP/AB, based on the comments and recommendations provided by the wide range of stakeholders and experts who participated in these events. In August 2019, the Tenth Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) Sub-Committee on Aquaculture, held in Trondheim, Norway endorsed the PMP/AB and the development of a multidonor-assisted, long-term aquaculture biosecurity component of an aquaculture programme, including its five pillars. Therefore, the FAO, through its Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, now has a mandate for the further development and implementation of the PMP/AB. Future activities include the establishment of an official Technical Working Group (TWG) that will drive the further development of the technical aspects of the PMP/AB, wider consensus building, initial application (pilot testing) and refinement of the PMP/AB tools, and resource mobilization for the aquaculture biosecurity programme. Guidance documents and resources for advocacy and training on the PMP/AB are currently in development to facilitate adoption at the national level.

Book The Economics of Human Systems Integration

Download or read book The Economics of Human Systems Integration written by William B. Rouse and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental Economic Principles, Methods, and Tools for Addressing Human Systems Integration Issues and Tradeoffs Human Systems Integration (HSI) is a new and fundamental integrating discipline designed to help move business and engineering cultures toward more human-centered systems. Integrating consideration of human abilities, limitations, and preferences into engineering systems yields important cost and performance benefits that otherwise would not have been accomplished. In order for this new discipline to be effective, however, a cultural change—starting with organizational leadership—is often necessary. The Economics of Human Systems Integration explains the difficulties underlying valuation of investments in people's training and education, safety and health, and work productivity. It provides an overview of how the field of economics addresses these difficulties, focusing on human issues associated with design, development, production, operations, maintenance, and sustainment of complex systems. The set of thought leaders recruited as contributors to this volume collectively provides a compelling set of data and principles for assessing the economic value of investing in people, not just in general but in specific investment situations. The early chapters provide the contexts for HSI and investment analysis, illustrating the enormous difference context makes in how issues are best framed and analyzed. A host of practical methods and tools for investment valuation are then presented. Provided are: A variety of real-world applications of economic analysis ranging from military acquisition and automotive investment to healthcare and high-tech investments in general, in both the U.S. and abroad A range of economics-based methods and tools for cost analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and investment analysis, as well as sources of data for performing such analyses Differing perspectives on economic decision-making, including a range of private sector points of view, as well as government and regulatory perspectives In addition, five real-world case studies illustrate how such valuations have been done and their major impacts on investment decisions. HSI professionals, systems engineers, and finance professionals who address investment analysis will appreciate the wide range of methods and real-life applications; senior undergraduates and masters-level graduate students will find this to be an excellent textbook that provides theory and supports practice.

Book Evidence Based Policymaking

Download or read book Evidence Based Policymaking written by Karen Bogenschneider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for those who believe that good government should be based on hard evidence, and that research and policy ought to go hand-in-hand. Unfortunately, no such bond exists. Rather, there is a substantial gap, some say chasm, between the production of knowledge and its utilization. Despite much contrary evidence, the authors propose there is a way of doing public policy in a more reflective manner, and that a hunger for evidence and objectivity does exist. The book is pragmatic, drawing on advice from some of the best and brightest informants from both the research and policy communities. In their own voices, researchers provide incisive analysis about how to bridge the research/policy divide, and policymakers provide insights about why they use research, what kind is most useful, where they seek it, and how they screen its quality. The book breaks through stereotypes about what policymakers are like, and provides an insiders’ view of how the policy process really works. Readers will learn what knowledge, skills, approaches, and attitudes are needed to take research findings from the laboratory to lawmaking bodies, and how to evaluate one’s success in doing so. The book’s balance between theory and practice will appeal to students in graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in family studies and family policy, educational policy, law, political science, public administration, public health, social work, and sociology. This book will also be of interest to researchers who want to bring their ideas into policy debate and to those who work with policymakers to advance an evidence-based policy agenda.

Book We ve Never Been Alone

Download or read book We ve Never Been Alone written by Paul Von Ward and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you call them gods, angels, ETs, or aliens, sufficient proof now exists that beings more advanced than humans have influenced our history. Evidence suggests that these outsiders shaped our religions, genes, technology, and cultures. In fact, they may have provided the impetus for modern civilization. Paul Von Ward investigates why modern science and religion refuse to address the possibility that humans interact with Advanced Beings (ABs). He reviews sacred texts, myths and legends--from the Old Testament, Hebrew texts, and the Vedas, to the Greek myths, Sumerian tablets, and other historical sources to make the link between religions, their gods, and alien intervention. He shows how this history of AB intervention has been suppressed and challenges readers to reexamine the origins of notions like “divine revelation” to find common ground among the world’s cultures and religions. Previously published as God, Genes, and Consciousness.

Book Assets Livelihoods and Social Policy

Download or read book Assets Livelihoods and Social Policy written by Anis A. Dani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-05-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the lack of adequate universal social welfare for those unable to find jobs in the salaried formal sector, the livelihoods and well-being of most poor people depends heavily on their asset base. This includes their ability to access and accumulate assets, obtain decent returns from these assets, and use their asset base to manage risks. 'Assets, Livelihoods, and Social Policy' discusses the diverse strategies adopted by people in different contexts to accumulate assets through migration, housing investments, natural resources management, and informal businesses. An asset-based social policy can strengthen asset accumulation strategies as well as help the poor overcome the constraints of unfavorable institutional environments. To a considerable extent, asset accumulation strategies depend on the agency exercised by people themselves through individual or collective action. At the same time, the status of policies and institutions can enable or hinder these strategies and affect livelihood outcomes. In synthesis, the case studies lead to the differentiation among three different types of policies: - policies that affect outcomes by directly influencing access to assets by the poor such as land, housing, natural resources, or credit. - policies and public investments that change the nature of returns on assets such as investments in rural roads, agricultural inputs, and market development. - policies that transform the value of assets held by the poor by virtue of administrative decisions that increase or reduce value such as re-classification of land from arable or pasture to protected lands, land use regulations affecting resource use, or modification in regulations governing labor rights or migration. The chapters, originally commissioned to re-examine major gaps in knowledge and development practice ten years after the Copenhagen Summit on Social Development, are authored by leading scholars from economics, anthropology, sociology, geography, and development studies. This book is part of a new series, New Frontiers in Social Policy, which examines issues and approaches to extend the boundaries of social policy beyond conventional social services toward policies and institutions that improve equality of opportunity and social justice in developing countries. Other titles in the series include Inclusive States: Social Policy and Structural Inequalities, and Institutional Pathways to Equity: Addressing Inequality Traps.
