Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through careful, detailed consideration of a host of primary documents about the young activists who formed the Underground Railroad's underappreciated operational workforce, this book offers fresh insight to the complex question, "Who ended slavery?" Bound for the Future: Child Heroes of the Underground Railroad illuminates the vital contributions of specific, underappreciated child activists within the extremely local circumstances of their daily work. It also provides meaningful context to the actions of these young activists within the much broader social practice of resisting slavery, and offers fresh insight into the complicated question of who was responsible for ending slavery. Through a thorough examination of these subjects, author Jonathan Shectman proves his central thesis: in many specific cases, children were the essential lifeblood of the Underground Railroad's operational workforce. This text will appeal to wide range of readers, including young students, educators, scholars, and anyone seeking a fresh perspective on civil rights, anti-slavery activism, and U.S. history.

Book The Life and Death of Gus Reed

Download or read book The Life and Death of Gus Reed written by Thomas Bahde and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gus Reed was a freed slave who traveled north as Sherman’s March was sweeping through Georgia in 1864. His journey ended in Springfield, Illinois, a city undergoing fundamental changes as its white citizens struggled to understand the political, legal, and cultural consequences of emancipation and black citizenship. Reed became known as a petty thief, appearing time and again in the records of the state’s courts and prisons. In late 1877, he burglarized the home of a well-known Springfield attorney—and brother of Abraham Lincoln’s former law partner—a crime for which he was convicted and sentenced to the Illinois State Penitentiary. Reed died at the penitentiary in 1878, shackled to the door of his cell for days with a gag strapped in his mouth. An investigation established that two guards were responsible for the prisoner’s death, but neither they nor the prison warden suffered any penalty. The guards were dismissed, the investigation was closed, and Reed was forgotten. Gus Reed’s story connects the political and legal cultures of white supremacy, black migration and black communities, the Midwest’s experience with the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the resurgence of nationwide opposition to African American civil rights in the late nineteenth century. These experiences shaped a nation with deep and unresolved misgivings about race, as well as distinctive and conflicting ideas about justice and how to achieve it.

Book People of the Underground Railroad

Download or read book People of the Underground Railroad written by Tom Calarco and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Underground Railroad was perhaps the best example in U.S. history of blacks and whites working together for the common good. People of the Underground Railroad is the largest in-depth collection of profiles of those individuals involved in the spiriting of black slaves to freedom in the northern states and Canada beginning around 1800 and lasting to the early Civil War years. One hundred entries introduce people who had a significant role in the rescuing, harboring, or conducting of the fugitives—from abolitionists, evangelical ministers, Quakers, philanthropists, lawyers, judges, physicians, journalists, educators, to novelists, feminists, and barbers—as well as notable runaways. The selections are geographically representational of the broad railroad network. There is renewed interest in the Underground Railroad, exemplified by the new National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati and energized scholarly inquiry. People of the Underground Railroad presents authoritative information gathered from the latest research and established sources, many of them from period publications. Designed for student research and general browsing, in-depth essay entries include further reading. Numerous sidebars complement the entries. A timeline, illustrations, and map help put the profiles into context.

Book excerpt: Eden’s Gate Kacie Cameron fell in love with Eden’s Gate Plantation when she read of its history. Drawn by a tremendous longing to learn more, she made a trip to Eden’s Gate. When Kacie saw the portrait of the original owner’s son, Bradford Hampton for the first time, the power of the feelings that swept through her almost frightened her. She told herself it was crazy to react that way to the portrait of a dead man…of a man who’d died in a steamboat explosion so long ago. The gut-wrenching emotions churning within her as she’d stared up at the dark-haired, handsome Brad’s compelling features did not disappear, though, and when she is miraculously swept back in time, she knows she must find a way to save him from that terrible fate. Something Blue Stationed in Arizona, Cavalry Captain Philip Long returns to Boston for the reading of his wealthy father’s will and to settle the estate. Philip is deeply troubled when he learns his father added a clause to the will that dictates he must marry within six months and stay married for a year or he will lose every cent of his inheritance. Unless he chooses to walk away from his fortune, Philip knows he’s trapped. But when he rescues young saloon girl Mattie Jackson from an attack by some vicious drunks on his trip back to Fort McDowell, he believes he’s found the answer to his problem. He’ll propose a “marriage in name only” to Mattie to save her from the life she’s been forced to lead, and once their year together is over, he’ll pay her a substantial amount so they can part ways…Or will they? Love might just interfere. Lottery of Love Elise Matthews has worked hard to make her catering service a success in order to support herself and her younger brother, Rod, after their parents died, and she buys lottery tickets every week just to keep up the tradition her father had. When she lands a contract with the rich owner of the local football team, she’s ecstatic. She rushes to the auto body shop where Rod works to tell him and their friend, Zach Thomas, who owns the shop, the news. Zach is happy for Elise. He secretly loves her and has always wanted the best for her, but now that she’ll be dealing with the rich folks on a regular basis, he fears she won’t have much use for a regular working guy like him anymore. Elise has always longed to be rich, and when the team owner proposes to her, she finds herself torn between the surprising love she’s finally realized she feels for Zach and the prospect of marrying a very wealthy man. Will true love win out? Will Zach win “The Lottery of Love?” Time Stolen Love For an investigative report on serial killers, television reporter Roni Mitchell is in London walking the streets of Whitechapel where Jack the Ripper once roamed. In an antique store she finds a gold pocket watch that was found at the scene of one of the Ripper’s murders. As she is heading back to her hotel, she hears the muted sound of a chime. Puzzled, she opens the box to discover the watch is working. Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, a dark, threatening figure attacks her. Roni manages to escape, but as she flees she realizes she’s traveled back to the time of the Ripper, and that she can now research her story firsthand . . .
