Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book School Health Services in India

Download or read book School Health Services in India written by Rama V Baru and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the contribution of education to health has gained recognition, the reciprocal relationship between health and education and its outcomes have not been adequately studied. This work broadens the perspective on school health in India by locating it within the epidemiological and socio-economic context of children in the school-going age group. The collection explores the social context and programmes for school health in the country, including the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) Scheme, School Health Services and School Health Education. Studies have shown that socio-economic factors play a very important role in determining enrolment, retention, completion and learning in schools. School Health Services in India: The Social and Economic Contexts analyzes the relationship between levels of malnutrition and minor and major illnesses on the one hand, and socio-economic status, on the other. It also examines in detail the different components of the school health programme in India and how they function in different contexts. In addition, it showcases the experiences of three NGOs who have adopted innovative approaches to transact health education in government schools in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. This seminal work will be helpful to teachers and researchers working in the fields of Education and Health. It will also be immensely useful for researchers and faculty working in the areas of Social Medicine, Community Health and Social Work.

Book excerpt: The Last Mile explores the gaps and dichotomy between drafted policies and their implementation, and the last mile challenges which often make public services inaccessible to the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society. It provides an in-depth overview of the dynamics between communities, research and consultation and the implementation of policies for development. Rich in empirical data and case studies from different government programmes and reports, this book examines the implementation of government service programmes for poverty reduction, women’s empowerment, and income generation for the poor, among others, from a people’s perspective. It highlights the need for policies and institutions to align their methods to community needs. Offering guidelines for redesigning as well as solutions to counter challenges related to lack of trust and effective communication, human resource management, capacity development, redressal mechanisms, and facilitating the last mile connection, the author delineates effective ways for integrating new technologies in policy implementation. The book also addresses legacy issues in institutions and re-orienting policy for better governance, transparency, and building trust. Book Countering Gender Violence

Download or read book Countering Gender Violence written by Kanchan Mathur and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-11-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence constitutes a major form of oppressing women. Rooted in the practical experiences of rural Indian women, Countering Gender Violence explores those facets of social, cultural and economic life that otherwise appear to have little bearing on gender violence and hence are rarely examined./-//-/This book studies the phenomenon of violence which, while being meted out to individual women, is systematically rooted in the social pattern of gender relations. Addressing gender violence requires challenging the means by which gender roles and power relations are defined and articulated in society. The book focuses on ways through which these relations can be altered in favour of women. /-//-/The author concludes that strategies for countering gender violence must emerge from women’s collective and shared experience of both subordination and empowerment.

Book Recovering from Earthquakes

Download or read book Recovering from Earthquakes written by Shirish Patel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes come without warming, and often cause massive devastation, resulting not only in the loss of property but also of lives. Many of the survivors suffer from intense and lasting psychological trauma. This book covers the experience of recent earthquakes in India, and what has been learnt (and what we have failed to learn) in the process of managing the aftermath in each case. This includes immediate medical attention, long-term mental health care, and the reconstruction of housing and infrastructure in both rural and urban areas. The experiences of the contributors, many of whom have actively contributed their expertise to disaster management and recovery, help us understand what problems require a swift response and which aspects should be based on detailed analyses keeping in mind local conditions. Reconstruction is seen as offering an opportunity to rebuild society such that all sections of the population are empowered and brought into the community’s decision-making process. It is also an opportunity to develop construction techniques that are suited to local materials and skills but are also more earthquake-resistant than the old. And finally, there is the realisation that the best first responders are local community groups which need to be nurtured, and trained in crisis management and risk mitigation.
