Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year in Spain, Vol. 1 of 2: By a Young American Some reason may, perhaps, be required for the work being put forth without a name. The au thor's name would insure it no acceptation; and there would, besides, be little modesty in appearing as the hero of a narrative, which, to be interesting, must become egotistical and exclusive. If it should succeed, the author will not enjoy it the less that he will enjoy it in secret. But he dreads the con trary. The difficulties which he has encountered in procuring publication are ominous of evil, and he would willingly avoid the odium of having made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year in Spain, Vol. 1 of 2: By a Young American Giving his Satanic Majesty due credit for the temptation mentioned in our motto, the present work originated in a desire to convey some notion of the manners and customs of the Spanish nation. The writer found much that was peculiar and interesting in them, and was thence led to think, that what had furnished so much pleasure in the immediate study, might not be wholly unattractive when contemplated through the secondary medium of description. Though this object should not be attained by the work now offered to the public, it may, perhaps, serve to attract attention to a country, which, though inferior to none in interest, has been of all others the most neglected. Book Spain Vol 1

Download or read book Spain Vol 1 written by Spain Rodriguez and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain Rodriguez is a legend in comix, whose life story was as exciting as the adventures of his comic book protagonists. Mentored by an artist mom, drawn to comic books and juvenile delinquency, a motorcycle outlaw, an influential artistic force in the underground press, and one of the original seven samurai of Zap Comix, this is the first volume in another historic landmark series from Fantagraphics. His alter ego Trashman, Agent of the Sixth International, sworn to fight the oppressor with his brothers and sisters… especially the sisters (ahem). The 170 pages of Trashman stories that Spain drew throughout his career form the backbone of this volume, along with his first hand accounts of riding with the Road Vultures Motorcycle Club (a gang once considered so dangerous that the police chief of Buffalo, New York, declared war on them) and his 1969 East Village Other series about cop corruption, Manning. This first volume is rounded with an informative inside account of Spain’s life and loves in the emerging counterculture of New York’s Lower East Side.

Book Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain Volume 1

Download or read book Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain Volume 1 written by Alexander von Humboldt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of this critical edition includes a note on the text from the Humboldt in English team, an introduction by editors Vera M. Kutzinski and Ottmar Ette, a preface to the first edition by Alexander von Humboldt, and the translation of Volumes 1 and 2 of Humboldt’s Essai politique sur le royaume de de Nouvelle Espagne from 1825 to 1827. Alexander von Humboldt was the most celebrated modern chronicler of North and South America and the Caribbean, and this translation of his essay on New Spain—the first modern regional economic and political geography—covers his travels across today’s Mexico in 1803–1804. The work canvases natural-scientific and cultural-scientific objects alike, combining the results of fieldwork with archival research and expert testimony. To show how people, plants, animals, goods, and ideas moved across the globe, Humboldt wrote in a variety of styles, bending and reshaping familiar writerly conventions to keep readers attentive to new inputs. Above all, he wanted his readers to be open-minded when confronted with cultural and other differences in the Americas. Fueled by his comparative global perspective on politics, economics, and science, he used his writing to support Latin American independence and condemn slavery and other forms of colonial exploitation. It is these voluminous and innovative writings on the New World that made Humboldt the undisputed father of modern geography, early American studies, transatlantic cultural history, and environmental studies. This two-volume critical edition—the third installment in the Alexander von Humboldt in English series—is based on the full text, including all footnotes, tables, and maps, of the second, revised French edition of Essai politique sur le royaume de de Nouvelle Espagne from 1825 to 1827, which has never been translated into English before. Extensive annotations and full-color atlases are available on the series website.

Book Denmark and the New North Atlantic

Download or read book Denmark and the New North Atlantic written by Kirsten Thisted and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how the emergence of the Arctic as a new geopolitical arena affects and reshapes the area known as the North Atlantic: Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and coastal Norway. The relationship between the center of the former Danish empire and its subordinates have rested on (varying degrees of) asymmetric power relations, that are intertwined with political as well as emotional bonds. With climate change a whole new reality is emerging in the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas. Power is moving north, and new connections and partnerships are being developed. As the North Atlantic countries share a history as being part of a Danish empire, some of the hierarchies and mindsets inherited from the past still affect the present. This calls for an in-depth understanding of the cultural history of the North Atlantic as well as current relations. What narratives make up the foundation for contemporary cooperation? How are historical relations and narratives being reinterpreted today? How do postcolonial relations affect decision-making concerning natural resources? How do North Atlantic communities envision the future? A team of historians, literary theorists, art historians, ethno - graphers and culture and communication scholars with profound insight into the histories, languages and cultures of the North Atlantic have collaborated on this study of the North Atlantic countries as an emerging new center in the North. Book A History of the Inquisition of Spain Vol 1 4

Download or read book A History of the Inquisition of Spain Vol 1 4 written by Henry Charles Lea and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 1795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A History of the Inquisition of Spain" in 4 volumes is one of the best-known works by the American historian Henry Charles Lea. The Spanish Inquisition (officially known as the "Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition") was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms and to replace the Medieval Inquisition, which was under Papal control. It became the most substantive of the three different manifestations of the wider Catholic Inquisition along with the Roman Inquisition and Portuguese Inquisition. The Inquisition was originally intended primarily to identify heretics among those who converted from Judaism and Islam to Catholicism. The regulation of the faith of newly converted Catholics was intensified after the royal decrees issued in 1492 and 1502 ordering Muslims and Jews to convert to Catholicism or leave Castile. The Inquisition was not definitively abolished until 1834, during the reign of Isabella II, after a period of declining influence in the preceding century. The Spanish Inquisition is often cited in popular literature and history as an example of religious intolerance and repression.
