Book Elements of Yacht Design

Download or read book Elements of Yacht Design written by Norman L. Skene and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is intended to be a practical and concise presentation of some of the operations involved in designing yachts of all types. Cumbersome and impractical methods which are so often found in more pretentious works on naval architecture have been avoided. Those presented have been in everyday use by the author." Thus wrote Norman L. Skene in the preface to the fifth edition of Elements of Yacht Design. Skene's is one of the most famous books on yacht design ever written. First published in 1904, Skene did several revisions, the last of which was published in 1938 and is reprinted here in its original form. In 1962, the book was completely revised by Francis S. Kinney and republished as Skene's Elements of Yacht Design. Kinney's last version was published in 1973 and it is long out of print. While the experts are divided on the relative merits of the different editions, it appears that there is strong demand for Skene's original work. At last the book is again available to the many boatbuilders, aspiring naval architects, and sailors who need it for frequent reference. The index has been completely revised and expanded to make it more useful for today's readers.

Book Elements of Yacht Design Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Yacht Design Classic Reprint written by Norman L. Skene and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Yacht Design This book is intended to be a concise and practical presentation of the processes involved in designing a modern yacht. There is at present an almost utter lack of material of this character which is in accord with modern American practice, and it is thought that the book may find a useful place among works on yacht architecture. It is intended to be thoroughly practical in character, all mathematics and theoretical presentations having been eliminated as far as possible, so that the operations may be readily grasped by men without technical education. A special feature of the book is the series of curves on plates VI, VII, VIII and IX, for determining the proportions of sailing yachts of various sizes. These have been prepared by the writer from data on a large number of yachts, and should prove of great assistance in roughing out a design. The methods presented for determining stability have been selected with reference to their applicability to small work, and are not ordinarily to be found in works on naval architecture. The various operations involved in designing a sailing yacht are illustrated in the text by work on the thirty-foot water line sloop whose plans are given on plates I, II, III and IV. This is intended to be a conventional rather than an ideal design, and was chosen on account of its suitability for purposes of illustration. The complete data on this design is given in the appendix. The author is indebted to Prof. C. H. Peabody, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for criticism and suggestion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still unsolved, still baffling, still claiming new victims. Here are the untold stories. A pilot reports a strange haze enveloping his plane, then disappears; eleven hours after fuel starvation, as if calling from a void, he is heard 600 miles away. He requests permission to land, then vanishes forever. A freighter steaming over placid seas disappears without a trace. A pleasure yacht ghosts past without a soul on board. A pilot calls for help because a "weird object" is harassing his plane. A jet collides with an "unknown" and is never found. . . . Into the Bermuda Triangle is the first comprehensive examination of these baffling disappearances in more than a generation. Drawing on official reports from the NTSB and other investigative agencies as well as interviews with scientists, theorists, and survivors, leading authority Gian Quasar not only sets the record straight on previously examined cases, he also offers a bulging file of new cases, the collective results of his twelve-year investigation. In meticulous detail this unflinching account: Documents confirmed disappearances of airplanes and ships Gathers new testimony and reexamines old interviews from eyewitnesses and survivors Explores possible explanations ranging from zero-point energy to magnetic vortices Challenges our assumptions with the sheer weight of accumulated evidence In this age of technological and scientific discovery, there are still mysteries that transcend understanding. The Bermuda Triangle is one. "The best book I've ever read on this important subject."—Andrew Griffin, The Town Talk
