This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Working Man's View of Tennyson's "Enoch Arden" Poetry is the guest of the human bosom, and wherever man is, his heart being with him, Poetry should be wel come. But it is quite another thing, giving a welcome to the poetic guest, to allow it to absorb the attention to the disharmony of all secular duties. Many thousands dream too little, and become so much absorbed in practical things that their hearts get hard as icebergs, which the heat of Love alone can soften. People of this class grow up 'with soulless bodies. Look at them, fearing to praise even the sun, that beautiful natural Poet who sends down his rays of light to translate earth with its beauty and music into a Paradise, because their souls are prostrate at the feet of Mammon, and theyhave learned to love their idol with all their affections! What is the god of day to them! Time cannot be spared from their musty ledgers and golden schemes to shake off the dust of business for an hour or two's luxury with the bright Poet of the universe. 'alas! For the victims of matter-of-fact philosophies when the heart beats only in unison with the ringing changes of gold! It is impossible to separate Poetry from man without robbing him of half his existence, and making him an enemy to religion and humanity. Poetry is the natural nectar of the Spirit. It is the sweet elixir of Love; the herald of Peace, and the angel that strews Life's path ways with heavenly flowers. Book The Reception of Alfred Tennyson in Europe

Download or read book The Reception of Alfred Tennyson in Europe written by Leonee Ormond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) has often been considered a particularly British writer in part as his official post as Poet Laureate inevitably committed him to a certain amount of patriotic writing. This volume focuses on his impact on the continent, presenting a major scholarly analysis of Tennyson's wider reception in different areas of Europe. It considers reader and critical responses and explores the effect of his poetry upon his contemporaries and later writers, as well as his influence upon illustrators, painters and musicians. The leading international contributors raise questions of translation and publication and of the choices made for this purpose along with the way in which his ideas and style influenced European writing and culture. Tennyson's reputation in Anglophone countries is now assured, following a decline in the years after his death. This volume enables us to chart the changes in Tennyson's European reputation during the later 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

Book The Major Victorian Poets Reconsiderations Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Major Victorian Poets Reconsiderations Routledge Revivals written by Isobel Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1969, this edition collection brings together a series of essays offering a re-evaluation of Victorian poetry in the light of early 20th Century criticism. The essays in this collection concentrate upon the poets whose reputations suffered from the great redirection of energy in English criticism initiated in this century by Eliot, Richards and Leavis. What theses poets wrote about, the values they expressed, the form of the poems, the language they used, all these were examined and found wanting in some radical way. One of the results of this criticism was the renewal of interest in metaphysical and eighteenth-century poetry and corresponding ebb of enthusiasm for Romantic poetry and for Victorian poetry in particular. Most of the essays in this book take as their starting point questions raised by the debate on Victorian poetry, both earlier in this century and in the more recent past. There are essays on the poetry of Tennyson, Browning and Arnold, on that of Clough, who until recently has been neglected, and Hopkins, because of, rather than in spite of, the fact that he is usually considered to be a modern poet. The volume is especially valuable in that it will give a clearer understanding of the nature of Victorian poetry, concentrating as it does on those areas of a poet’s work where critical discussion seems most necessary.
