Download or read book A Word that Sets Free written by Mark Ellingsen and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the heritage of African-American churches, Mark Ellingsen has created innovative, visionary sermons on Old Testament texts from the Revised Common Lectionary. His messages reflect his unique vantage point as a Lutheran of Norwegian heritage teaching at a historically black seminary, and they are a model for anyone who wants to learn how to relate the Bible to the cutting-edge social issues of our day. Ellingsen suggests that many American Christians have abdicated their responsibility to advocate justice in our society or to talk about what the gospel can do in our lives and society as a whole from Monday through Saturday. Ellingsen believes these Old Testament texts are relevant to our contemporary lives. An all-too-common view of many Christians is look to the New Testament to find the liberating word of God, while viewing the Old Testament as being about the law and the confining demands of tradition. But Ellingsen says that the history of Christianity proves this is not true. He observes that Martin Luther was primarily an Old Testament scholar, and that African-American churches have based many of their traditions of liberation on Old Testament stories and prophetic traditions. Mark Ellingsen's offering of sermons based on Old Testament texts reflects his usual thorough biblical scholarship and his readable, down-to-earth style that consistently render his material useful to both scholars and those seeking the inspiration of a faithful Christian. Richard H. Stough, Publisher King Publications Mark Ellingsen has had a rich and varied career as a parish pastor and a seminary professor. In addition to serving several Lutheran congregations in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, he has held teaching positions at Luther-Northwestern Seminary and the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France. Ellingsen currently is on the faculty of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, the largest historic African-American seminary in the United States. A regular contributor to several homiletics periodicals, Ellingsen is also the author of ten books, some of which have been used as homiletics texts in many American and Canadian seminaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in in 1976, Hermann Levin Goldschmidt's Contradiction Set Free, (Freiheit für den Widerspruch), reflects the push to explore new forms of critical thinking that gained momentum in the decade between Theodor Adorno's Negative Dialectics of 1966 and Paul Feyerabend's Against Method in 1975. The book articulates Goldschmidt's reclamation of an epistemologically critical position that acknowledges the deep underlying link between the modes of production of knowledge and the social and political life they produce. In signalling a breakout from the academic rut and its repressive hold, Goldschmidt pointed beyond the ossified methods of a philosophical discourse whose oppressive consequences could no longer be ignored.Contradiction Set Free makes available for the first time in English a pivotal work by one of the great critical thinkers of the 20th century.

Download or read book The Amazing Illustrated Word Game Memory Books Volume 2 Set 2 written by Frank H. Gaertner and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Volume 2, Set 2 of the AIWGMB, is a continuation of a three-set series of stories and illustrations representing all of the 7-letter words captured by The Central Twenty-One Five-Letter Stems that feed into the Central Seven Six-Letter Stems of Volume 1, Set 1. Knowledge and flash, photographic-memory recall of these word lists, together with those of the Auxiliary Seven Six-Letter Stems of Volume 1, Set 2 can be valuable assets for any wannabe, top contender in our rapidly growing, competitive, word-game, social networks. The wordlists, organized in Mentafile(TM) format, are coded with peg-words assigned to each letter of the alphabet. This type of iconic coding-organization can make letter-management, and identification of 7-letter words within scrambled arrays, effortless, almost as though one has an app that automatically brings bonus-words to mind as one plays off letters "on-the-way" to one of the Central Seven Six-Letter Stems. For example, in a board game, where letters must be unscrambled to reveal hidden words, one might hold, in alphagram order, the following seven letters; ADNRSTU. For those accomplished with Vol. 2, Set 2 of the AIWGMB, the identification of the five-letter stem, RNAST, and the letter, D, within ADNRSTU, would be instantaneous, along with the mental search for the story and illustration of "She STRANDS the drunk on a TUNDRA'S plain." Alternatively, one might hold ADNRSST, which would immediately bring up the word STRANDS from that story. STANDER, the only other possibility for a 7-letter RNASTD word would show up with the holding of ADENRST, the only bonus word featured in the drunk file of RNEAST, one of the Central Seven Six-Letter Stems of Vol. 1, Set 1. Therefore, with no E, R or S in the hand, one skilled in the use of The AIWGMB would know, with valuable certainty, that no 7-letter bonus words were available for play. But the fun's not over. It really begins when we add to our search the thirty four, 8-letter RNASTD words of RNAST, RNEAST and INRAST. Having learned to "read" alphagrams from the flashcards connected to the stories and Illustrations of this series, we now watch our opponents shrink in terror as we unleash our knowledge and skill at finding and playing one of these 8-letter winners!
Download or read book The Flames of Florence written by Donna Russo Morin and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this historical novel, six female painters in Renaissance Florence are challenged as a religious fanatic tears apart their city—and their friendship. Lorenzo de Medici is dead, and his son Piero has brought war and famine upon the city of Florence. Yet the glory that is Renaissance artistry grows more magnificent, as does the work of the women known as Da Vinci's Disciples. Now they face their most dangerous challenge, one shrouded in the cloak of a monk. From the ashes of war, Friar Girolamo Savonarola rises. Some call him a savior and a prophet, a man willing to overthrow tyrannical rulers and corrupt clergy—the Borgia Pope among them. Fra Girolamo is determined to remold Florence from an avaricious, secular culture to a paragon of Christian virtues. Others call Savonarola a delusional heretic, incapable of anything but self-serving fanaticism. When he sets out to destroy all secular art forms, Da Vinci's Disciples call him an enemy . . . but not all of them. “Illicit plots, mysterious paintings, and Leonardo da Vinci all have their part to play in this delicious, heart-pounding work.” —Kate Quinn, New York Times and USA Today–bestselling author of The Alice Network “Morin, a master of her craft, has penned an intricate story full of lush historical detail with a plot that will leave you breathless.” —Tasha Alexander, New York Times–bestselling author of Death in St. Petersburg
