Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Brontës had their moors, I have my marshes," Lorine Niedecker wrote of flood-prone Black Hawk Island in Wisconsin, where she lived most of her life. Her life by water, as she called it, could not have been further removed from the avant-garde poetry scene where she also made a home. Niedecker is one of the most important poets of her generation and an essential member of the Objectivist circle. Her work attracted high praise from her peers--Marianne Moore, William Carlos Williams, Louis Zukofsky, Cid Corman, Clayton Eshleman--with whom she exchanged life-sustaining letters. Niedecker was also a major woman poet who interrogated issues of gender, domesticity, work, marriage, and sexual politics long before the modern feminist movement. Her marginal status, both geographically and as a woman, translates into a major poetry. Niedecker's lyric voice is one of the most subtle and sensuous of the twentieth century. Her ear is constantly alive to sounds of nature, oddities of vernacular speech, textures of vowels and consonants. Often compared to Emily Dickinson, Niedecker writes a poetry of wit and emotion, cosmopolitan experimentation and down-home American speech. This much-anticipated volume presents all of Niedecker's surviving poetry, plays, and creative prose in the sequence of their composition. It includes many poems previously unpublished in book form plus all of Niedecker's surviving 1930s surrealist work and her 1936-46 folk poetry, bringing to light the formative experimental phases of her early career. With an introduction that offers an account of the poet's life and notes that provide detailed textual information, this book will be the definitive reader's and scholar's edition of Niedecker's work.

Book Records of Woman with Other Poems

Download or read book Records of Woman with Other Poems written by Felicia Hemans and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felicia Hemans (1793-1835), one of the most influential and widely-read poets of the nineteenth century, wrote Records of Woman in 1828 at the height of her long career. In the series, which includes nineteen poems about exemplary lives, Hemans explores what it means to be a woman, challenging traditional beliefs while at the same time reinforcing persistent stereotypes. Her work celebrates the lives, events, and imagined thoughts of unremembered women from different cultures and time periods whose deeds show nobility of spirit and inner strength. In her introduction, Paula Feldman examines how Hemans's poetry shaped and was shaped by nineteenth-century literary tastes, and she reconsiders the aesthetic value of Hemans's work and the current understanding of the nature of Romanticism.

Book Orpheus with His Lute

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elisabeth Henry
  • Publisher : SIU Press
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780809317691
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Orpheus with His Lute written by Elisabeth Henry and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend of Orpheus has exerted a powerful influence on the work of poets and artists through the ages--from the poetry of Virgil and Ovid and the Ovidian romances of the Middle Ages to the new mythologies of Blake and Rilke. Orpheus was believed to have aroused responses from inanimate nature as well as from living creatures, bringing about a peaceful order and even--in some cases-- restoring the dead to life. This challenging new study analyses the changing images of Orpheus in the poetry, sculpture and vase-painting of the ancient world. The author shows how later versions diverge from the early story of the divinely inspired poet-musician and reflect conflicting ideas about the nature of poetic creativity, its sources and powers. Orpheus with His Lute is essential reading for all those interested in literature and the psychology of aesthetic experience. It will also be of value to students of philosophy and the history of religion.
