Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dynamic text comprehensively examines dimensions of Women's health. The 1990s have identified women's health as a critical new frontier in health education. This book takes neither a traditional nor feminist approach to women's health. It is a data driven, contemporary combination of both approaches with an emphasis on informed personal decision making. The book offers a scientific review of women's health issues from epidemiological, historical, legal, social and clinical perspectives. The concept of "Consumerism" is stressed throughout the spectrum of women's health issues. Based on scientific data and clinical findings, this book is referenced with the most current information and data available. The text is ideal for courses focusing on women's studies in health education, nursing, allied health, and psychology." "Special Features: clinically accurate assessment of the issues; sensitivity to, and discussion of, the full spectrum of factors that contribute to the issues (ethnic, psycho-social, political, legal, etc.); format helps structure students' analytical and personal decision making skills."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Women s Health Missing from U S Medicine

Download or read book Women s Health Missing from U S Medicine written by Sue Vilhauer Rosser and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The male-centered focus of clinical research has led to the understudy and underfunding of women's diseases; the exclusion of women from experimental drug trials; and the failure to understand the health of the elderly, who are mostly female. Women's Health critiques male-focused medical research and health care practice and explores solutions available through medical education to make women's health and well-being share the focus of the medical mission. Sue Rosser begins her critique by examining ethical problems raised by an androcentric focus in clinical research. Then she examines the problems such a focus raises in internal medicine, psychiatry, and obstetrics and gynecology. Chapters trace the origins of gender bias in clinical specialty research to its roots in the related basic science discipline. The next three chapters underline the profound effects that the understudy of women's health has for particular subpopulations of women. Virtually no research has been undertaken that acknowledges the diversity among women; minority women, lesbians, and elderly women largely have been ignored in the scant research that has centered on women's health needs. proposed through implementation of changes in methodologies, curricula, classroom and clinical climates, teaching methods, and evaluation in medical education. Sure Rosser is a feminist medical educator with a mission to decenter the current medical model in order to make it more inclusive and human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have made it clear that they desire a broader, integrative approach to their care. Here, for the first time, Integrative Women's Health weaves together the best of conventional treatments with mind-body interventions, nutritional strategies, herbal therapies, dietary supplements, acupuncture, and manual medicine, providing clinicians with a roadmap for practicing comprehensive integrative care. Presenting the best evidence in a concise, accessible format, and written exclusively by female clinicians, this text addresses many aspects of women's health, including feminine perspectives on aging, spirituality and sexuality, specific recommendations for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, headaches, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, and cancer, as well as integrative approaches to premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, menopause, fibroids, and endometriosis. Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners provide insight into the ways in which these systems manage reproductive conditions. As leading educators in integrative medicine, editors Dr. Maizes and Dr. Low Dog demonstrate how clinicians can implement their recommendations in practice, but they also go beyond practical care to examine how to motivate patients, enhance a health history, and understand the spiritual dimensions of healing.
