Book A Woman s Voice

Download or read book A Woman s Voice written by Amber L. Manning-Ouellette and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant social and personal area of the first-year of college is the freedom to engage in casual sex relationships. There is an indication that negative emotions and regret effect women longer than men (Esbaugh & Gute, 2008; Lambert, Kahn, & Apple, 2003; Littleton, Tabernik, Canales, Backstrom, 2009; Morgan & Zurbriggen, 2009; Nack, 2008). The purpose of the study is to investigate how first-year college women understand their sexual experiences. By gathering narratives directly from first-year college women regarding their sex education background and experiences, this dissertation will obtain information needed to offer the types of successful strategies and information secondary and postsecondary education can provide women to strengthen their cognitions and to enlighten their college experiences. This qualitative study investigates how women understand their sexual experiences through women's cognitive development. I conducted twelve 90-minute interviews with a diverse set of first-year college female participants using a structured interviewing technique with open-ended questions. This structure provided an opportunity for exploration of student's sexual decision-making and understanding of the experiences. My interviewing techniques mimic the strategies of grounded theory and I interpreted my data through a three phase thematic coding process guided by the theoretical framework of Belenky, Clinchy, Goldberger, & Tarule (1986) Women's Ways of Knowing. The findings suggest that women understand their sexual experiences through informal sex education background, public sexual identity, and private sexual identity. These identities are understood through silence and received knowledge in the women's lived experiences and ownership of knowledge. The findings also suggest a model for college women's sexual identity development and how higher education can develop successful strategies to empower women and enlighten their educational experiences to assist in their academic persistence.

Book Boys Love Manga and Beyond

Download or read book Boys Love Manga and Beyond written by Mark McLelland and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boys Love Manga and Beyond looks at a range of literary, artistic and other cultural products that celebrate the beauty of adolescent boys and young men. In Japan, depiction of the “beautiful boy” has long been a romantic and sexualized trope for both sexes and commands a high degree of cultural visibility today across a range of genres from pop music to animation. In recent decades, “Boys Love” (or simply BL) has emerged as a mainstream genre in manga, anime, and games for girls and young women. This genre was first developed in Japan in the early 1970s by a group of female artists who went on to establish themselves as major figures in Japan's manga industry. By the late 1970s many amateur women fans were getting involved in the BL phenomenon by creating and self-publishing homoerotic parodies of established male manga characters and popular media figures. The popularity of these fan-made products, sold and circulated at huge conventions, has led to an increase in the number of commercial titles available. Today, a wide range of products produced both by professionals and amateurs are brought together under the general rubric of “boys love,” and are rapidly gaining an audience throughout Asia and globally. This collection provides the first comprehensive overview in English of the BL phenomenon in Japan, its history and various subgenres and introduces translations of some key Japanese scholarship not otherwise available. Some chapters detail the historical and cultural contexts that helped BL emerge as a significant part of girls' culture in Japan. Others offer important case studies of BL production, consumption, and circulation and explain why BL has become a controversial topic in contemporary Japan.

Book Seeking But Not Finding

Download or read book Seeking But Not Finding written by Rebecca Rich and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between feelings of empowerment and improved health behavior demonstrates the relevance of feminism in sexual health. A segment of the population that is at great risk of negative sexual health outcomes is college women. Health education and promotion efforts targeting this population could have many benefits, but those benefits could be even greater if feminist tenets are incorporated. Undergraduate public health women are in a position of expertise and possess a sense of agency related to this topic. This study utilized a Feminist Theoretical framework informed by bell hooks' understandings of feminism to explore the influence of college women's perceptions of feminism on their sexual health information- and service-seeking behaviors. In eight narrative interviews, qualitative data related to perceptions of feminism and experiences with seeking sexual health services and information were collected from undergraduate public health women at a large southeastern university. Thematic analysis was used to evaluate the transcripts of those interviews, and found poetry was used to represent the women's experiences with seeking sexual health services and information. Findings showed that these women have positive perceptions of feminism, which makes them feel frustrated with the experiences that they have had of "seeking but not finding" what they know they need when it comes to sexual health services and information. This caused the women to emphasize the impact of the quality of sexuality education that young girls receive, and stress the need for improved, quality, comprehensive sexuality education for all people. Their understandings of feminism made them believe that this "seeking but not finding" is unacceptable. Undergraduate public health women have a deep understanding of health and the influence that sociopolitical factors play on individuals' well-being. Their feelings of empowerment from feminism intensify this understanding of the need for health equity, and the changes that need to be made to get there. The "hush hush" taboo nature surrounding sexuality does more harm than good. The findings of this study, through the use of language and narratives, elucidate the experiences of these women and give examples of what must be done better in the field of health education to prevent future generations from "seeking but not finding."

Book Black College Women s Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors Within the Context of Hookup Culture

Download or read book Black College Women s Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors Within the Context of Hookup Culture written by Wendasha Jenkins Hall and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Black women are one of the fastest growing minority populations on United States (US) college campuses. In addition, they are disproportionately burdened by the sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV epidemics facing young adults. Despite these deleterious health outcomes, little is known about the sexual behaviors and factors that affect Black college women's sexual health. One avenue of sexual health research with potential to shed light on this population's sexual behavior and risk is hookup culture. The 'hookup'--a casual sexual encounter between individuals without the expectation of a dating or romantic relationship--has become increasingly prevalent on US college campuses with 60-80% of students reporting at least one hookup experience during their college career. Considering that young adults aged 15-24 account for half of new STI diagnoses in the US each year, hookups present a potential health risk to college students. However, the existing hookup literature is overwhelming White and female, and often exclusive of historically marginalized populations such as Black women. The data resulting from predominantly White, female samples creates generalizations and assumptions regarding prototypical hookup behaviors and experiences among college students, which may inadvertently mask important racial/ethnic differences in sexual behaviors and corresponding risks. The masking of Black women's experiences could lead to the oversight of possible risk and protective factors that influence their sexual and reproductive health. The near absence of Black women in the literature is indicative of a need for intersectional research examining the possible role of race and gender on hookup participation. The purpose of this dissertation study was two-fold. The first goal was to quantitatively examine the intersecting relationship of race and gender and its association with hookup attitudes and condomless vaginal sex during hookups. The study also explored the association between pre-hookup relationship intentions and condomless vaginal sex. The second goal of the study was to qualitatively describe Black college women's perceptions of and attitudes toward hookup culture on their respective college campuses. The two papers included in this dissertation addressed the following research questions: (1) "What is the association between the intersection of race and gender and attitudes toward hookups?" and (2) "What is the association between pre-hookup relationship intentions, race, gender and condom use during last vaginal hookup encounter?" Preliminary findings from the qualitative phase of the study are also discussed. In all, the quantitative findings from this study indicated that both race and gender were statistically, significantly associated with college students' attitudes toward hooking up. Black students and female students held more conservative attitudes toward hooking up than their White and male counterparts, respectively. Further, both race and gender were statistically, significantly associated and condom use during last vaginal hookup. Black students and male students were more likely to report condom use during their last vaginal hookup when compared to their White and female counterparts, respectively. Pre-hookup relationship intentions were also found to play a significant role in condom use at last vaginal hookup. Students who desired a relationship with their hookup partner were less likely to report condom use than those who had no desire or were unsure of their relationship intentions. In both studies, the interaction between race and gender was found to have no influence on attitudes toward hooking up and condom use during last vaginal hookup. The preliminary qualitative findings from the focus groups suggest that Black college women's sexual attitudes and experiences of romantic and casual sexual relationships with hookup culture are influenced by both racial and gendered stereotypes and expectations of appropriate sexual behavior. Accordingly, future research should further examine the intersectional influences of race and gender on Black college women's sexual experiences to enhance our understanding of the sexual health disparities facing this population and inform culturally congruent interventions."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Gender and Self care in Undergraduate University Students microform a Qualitative Study

Download or read book Gender and Self care in Undergraduate University Students microform a Qualitative Study written by Anne Johnston Munroe and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in the interpretive paradigm, this research sought to better understand the ways in which men and women experience their physical and mental health and the methods they employ to augment or maintain their health. Another purpose of the research was to develop grounded theory since there is no framework to guide self-care research. Because men and women generally are not familiar with the term "self-care", the research question was "How do you take care of your physical and mental health?" The population I selected was undergraduate students. The study revealed that the issues salient to the men and women were different, though not exclusive to each gender. The themes that were described by the men were achievement, friendship, and intimacy. For the women, the themes discussed most were appearance, worry, and talk. These categories were unlike those that are generally found in the "health" research literature. The students indicated that their definition of the "self" differed from that generally found in "health" research and writing. Over all, the students' self-definitions were holistic comprising physical, sexual, emotional, moral, intellectual, and spiritual aspects. The students reported that "care" was determined by the degree to which the individual accepted stereotyped notions of gender role appropriate to their sex. The study identified a number of ideologies and specific communication styles related to gender that restricted the "health" opportunities of men and women. Men had to be active, to "do everything", "to do it well", "to do it quickly" and to "do it alone". A few men spoke of messages to initiate and to be outgoing. Drinking was one way for a shy man to fit this image. Others described pressure to be sexually active. Some men also indicated that it was difficult for them to know their feelings and sometimes described strategies to avoid feeling. This study showed that women's ability to communicate verbally is restricted by social conventions. Evidence of the circumscribed nature of women's speech was in their difficulty being open about sexuality with their mothers, in the incapacity to express anger, in their inability to stand up to others who might take advantage of them. The women identified a number of barriers to women's friendships such as gossip in the residences and back-stabbing. Women also had learned that it was important to look good. Many were dissatisfied with aspects of their appearance. Evidence from this investigation also challenged the notion that men are independent. Therefore this study indicates that there should be a re-thinking of relational theory which posits that women struggle with separateness while men struggle with connection. This study indicated that men had difficulty separating themselves from their male peers. I determined that two overlapping models which contained all six themes was the best way to envision the potentiality of men and women. Talking is a central part of the experience of the women that I interviewed, including talk about feelings. The men may have been more comfortable dealing with feeling through the body: massage, and physical exercise. They also made use of music to alter their emotions. Consideration should be given to incorporating other forms of therapy such as physical activity for both men and women.

Book excerpt: A closer look into the new sexual culture on college campuses It happens every weekend: In a haze of hormones and alcohol, groups of male and female college students meet at a frat party, a bar, or hanging out in a dorm room, and then hook up for an evening of sex first, questions later. As casually as the sexual encounter begins, so it often ends with no strings attached; after all, it was “just a hook up.” While a hook up might mean anything from kissing to oral sex to going all the way, the lack of commitment is paramount. Hooking Up is an intimate look at how and why college students get together, what hooking up means to them, and why it has replaced dating on college campuses. In surprisingly frank interviews, students reveal the circumstances that have led to the rise of the booty call and the death of dinner-and-a-movie. Whether it is an expression of postfeminist independence or a form of youthful rebellion, hooking up has become the only game in town on many campuses. In Hooking Up, Kathleen A. Bogle argues that college life itself promotes casual relationships among students on campus. The book sheds light on everything from the differences in what young men and women want from a hook up to why freshmen girls are more likely to hook up than their upper-class sisters and the effects this period has on the sexual and romantic relationships of both men and women after college. Importantly, she shows us that the standards for young men and women are not as different as they used to be, as women talk about “friends with benefits” and “one and done” hook ups. Breaking through many misconceptions about casual sex on college campuses, Hooking Up is the first book to understand the new sexual culture on its own terms, with vivid real-life stories of young men and women as they navigate the newest sexual revolution.

Book Sexual Desire Pleasure and Wellness

Download or read book Sexual Desire Pleasure and Wellness written by Lilanta Joy Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public health researchers most often take a risk-based approach to adolescent sexuality, framing it in terms of disease, pregnancy and negative health outcomes. The overall purpose of the present study is to understand the external and internal factors that shape the sexual self-awareness of Black adolescent females by addressing the following questions with a sex-positive framework: How do Black women in their recollections as Black girls perceive and internalize their lived experiences of sexual desire and pleasure? How do Black women in their recollections as Black girls create meaning around desire and pleasure within the context of the dimensions of sexual wellness: physical, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and environmental? This qualitative study included the following methods of data collection: interview, demographic survey, Female Sexual Subjectivity Inventory scale, and journal entries. Each case represented the recollections of Black women as Black girls, from the ages of 10 to 19 years old. This study revealed an immense variability among the 10 participants' sexual experiences. The participants' overwhelming lack of knowledge about their bodies and the human sexual response. Participants shared similar narratives about the lack of information and communication about sex with their parents. Participants reported prioritizing their partner's pleasure over their own pleasure in early and middle adolescence. However, as the participants transitioned into late adolescence, their narratives were more reflective of sexual reciprocity. participants' reports of mixed messages from parents, church, and media. These mixed messages lead to largely negative feelings and associations about their sexuality. Participants reported varying amounts of sexual agency in relation to the internalized messages they received regarding sexual desire and pleasure from parents, religious sources, peers, and media. Despite reports of ambivalence in knowledge about their bodies and the human sexual response, entitlement to self and partnered pleasure, and self-efficacy to achieve pleasure in early and middle adolescence, as participants entered late adolescents there was a visual shift in a healthier perception of sexual desire and pleasure. An integrative model of Black Feminist Thought and the dimensions of sexual wellness illustrates a sex-positive approach to the sexual health and well-being of young Black women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′It is not often I can use "accessible" and "phenomenology" in the same sentence, but reading the new book, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis...certainly provides me the occasion to do so. I can say this because these authors provide an engaging and clear introduction to a relatively new analytical approach′ - The Weekly Qualitative Report Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is an increasingly popular approach to qualitative inquiry. This handy text covers its theoretical foundations and provides a detailed guide to conducting IPA research. Extended worked examples from the authors′ own studies in health, sexuality, psychological distress and identity illustrate the breadth and depth of IPA research. Each of the chapters also offers a guide to other good exemplars of IPA research in the designated area. The final section of the book considers how IPA connects with other contemporary qualitative approaches like discourse and narrative analysis and how it addresses issues to do with validity. The book is written in an accessible style and will be extremely useful to students and researchers in psychology and related disciplines in the health and social sciences.

Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.
