Upon arriving in Montgomery County near what would soon be Hillsboro, they set up a general store and real estate business and began to raise a family. A half century later, in 1870, Christiana Tillson wrote about her early days in Illinois in a memoir published by R. R. Donnelley in 1919. The Tillsons lived quite ordinary lives in extraordinary times, notes Kay J. Carr, introducing this edition. They moved west and prospered in the land business at a time when America was being transformed from a rural, agricultural country into an urban, industrial nation. Their views and sensibilities, Carr says, might seem strange to us, but they were entirely normal to people in the early nineteenth century. Thus Tillson's memoir provides fascinating but believable snapshots of ordinary nineteenth-century American life.

Excerpt: ... of pioneer 91lUnote Amherst, Mass., June 28, 1870. My Dear Daughter: HENEVER you have expressed a wish that I would write out some of my early western experiences, I have felt an inclination to comply with your request, but ill health and other hindrances have prevented. As writing is not my forte, I do not feel that I can produce anything which will at present interest you much; but my own appreciation of every record left me by my good mother and my dear husband makes me feel that I may leave you something which will interest you in after life, more than at the present time. Although you have spent the greater part of your life at the West, the accumulation of comforts, and the luxuries and improvements forty or fifty years have brought, and which are there so liberally enjoyed, forbid the realization of frontier life to those who have not by stern experience passed through such an ordeal; and though we have many pleasant recollections, I think, as a whole, the retrospect is preferable to the reality. Few would like to again pass through the bitterness for the sake of enjoying the remembrance of the few sweets. Your father's date of western life was three and a half years earlier than mine. He went to Illinois in the spring of 1819, and I did not go until the autumn of 1822. He, of course, had a sterner experience of backwoods life than I had; he also had a stronger development of hope, and a most indomitable energy that carried him through all the disagreeables that came in his way. It is rare to find one so amiable in every relation in his intercourse with the world, both socially and in business transactions, who yet could be so determined and persevering in whatever he undertook to do. His boyhood and early manhood were spent with...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many pioneer stories were written at the request of a child or grandchild. What makes Christiana Tillson's humorous memoir different was her background. Tillson's story records the reactions produced upon a refined New England woman by an environment at once predominantly southern and wholly frontier. Her youth in 1822 and her parting from all that she had known in the east were common of many later western migrants. But when she and her husband went out to try their fortunes, the "west" was what we today call the Midwest. It was still a wild, dangerous, and uncertain place to try to make a future. But the Tillson's did and Christiana left us a valuable account of their trials.

Out where the skies are a trifle bluer, Out where friendship's a little truer, That's where the West begins. Out where a fresher breeze is blowing, Where there's laughter in every streamlet flowing, Where there's more of reaping and less of sowing. That's where the West begins. Out where the world is in the making, Where fewer hearts in despair are aching, That's where the West begins. Where there's more of singing and less of sighing, Where there's more of giving and less of buying, And a man makes friends without half trying, That's where the West begins. Book Life of a Woman Pioneer

Download or read book Life of a Woman Pioneer written by James Elder Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of a Woman Pioneer: As Illustrated in the Life of Elsie Strawn Armstrong, 1789-1871 This little volume was inspired over sixty years ago, when, as a boy of from ten to fifteen years old I was very much impressed by the accounts my grandmother, Elsie Strawn Armstrong, recited to me from time to time of her early life in pioneer days of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois. She called her stanzas poetry and I supposed they ranked well with those of Longfellow and Whittier. I was impressed too, with her ability to recall her lines verbatim if given a word or two to start off on any event of her life story. I also soon learned after she came to live at my father's home that if I wished to play on the grass I must find a place remote from the house, for if seen on the lawn in front of her window, there would be a tap, tap on the glass and I would have to go to her room and sew carpet rags or thread, what seemed to me, a hundred needles. My father instructed me that I must wait on her and run errands for her whenever needed and that seemed to me to be most of the time. Nevertheless I recognized that she was deserving of attention for she was nearly blind when she first came to live with us in 1861, so I served her as cheerfully as a boy of that age could be expected to do. I kept her wood-box filled with firewood, carried out the ashes and worst of all, I had to pull out her stumps of eye-lashes as often as they were long enough to be grasped by the tweezers. I do not recall whether it was her suggestion or my own, that some time, I should publish her rhymes so that her book might be sold in the shops as other books of poetry were. At any rate I carried that intention in mind several years. At last when a complete type-written copy of all her rhymes was prepared by one of my brothers, I thought I would now begin the long deferred task and prepare a copy for the printer, but I soon saw that to correct her English would destroy the rhythm and rhymes. I spent some time trying to do the impossible and then gave it up for another series of years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
