Book excerpt: The name "Junia" appears in Romans 16:7, and Paul identifies her (along with Andronicus) as "prominent among the apostles." In this important work, Epp investigates the mysterious disappearance of Junia from the traditions of the church. Because later theologians and scribes could not believe (or wanted to suppress) that Paul had numbered a woman among the earliest churches' apostles, Junia's name was changed in Romans to a masculine form. Despite the fact that the earliest churches met in homes and that other women were clearly leaders in the churches (e.g., Prisca and Lydia), calling Junia an apostle seemed too much for the tradition. Epp tracks how this happened in New Testament manuscripts, scribal traditions, and translations of the Bible. In this thoroughgoing study, Epp restores Junia to her rightful place.

Book Women in the New Testament

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 2017-06-15
  • ISBN : 0814638872
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Women in the New Testament written by Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the history of women, in religion as in other fields, is lost because it was overlooked or considered unimportant. It is therefore surprising that so many fragments of women's stories survive in the New Testament texts composed by men. Why did they include so many references to women and why are women, as a group, treated so positively by the male New Testament writers? Women in the New Testament shows how the stories of women are an integral part of the Gospel and its meaning for us. It also relays how we can respond to the challenge these women represent, whether we are men trying to understand or women trying to find our voices within the tradition of faith found in the New Testament. Chapter one discusses three women of expectant faith. Chapters two and three deal with women who are changed by Jesus. Chapter four focuses on New Testament women of influence. Chapters five and six show how women disciples spread and gave shape to the gospel message. Chapters are "Women of Expectant Faith," “Women Changed by Jesus,” “More Women Changed by Jesus,” “Women of Prominence,” “Women and Discipleship,” and “More Women and Discipleship.” Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan, PhD, teaches at St. Vincent College and St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She is the author of First and Second Corinthians from the Collegeville Bible Commentary series, author of the God Speaks to Us series of children's books, and editor of the Zacchaeus Studies: New Testament series published by The Liturgical Press. Book The Bible in American Law and Politics

Download or read book The Bible in American Law and Politics written by John R. Vile and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-09-19 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While scholars increasingly recognize the importance of religion throughout American history, The Bible in American Law and Politics is the first reference book to focus on the key role that the Bible has played in American public life. In considering revolting from Great Britain, Americans contemplated whether this was consistent with scripture. Americans subsequently sought to apply Biblical passages to such issues as slavery, women’s rights, national alcoholic prohibition, issues of war and peace, and the like. American presidents continue to take their oath on the Bible. Some of America’s greatest speeches, for example, Lincoln’s Second Inaugural and William Jennings Bryan’s Cross of Gold speech, have been grounded on Biblical texts or analogies. Today, Americans continue to cite the Bible for positions as diverse as LGBTQ rights, abortion, immigration, welfare, health care, and other contemporary issues. By providing essays on key speeches, books, documents, legal decisions, and other writings throughout American history that have sought to buttress arguments through citations to Scriptures or to Biblical figures, John Vile provides an indispensable guide for scholars and students in religion, American history, law, and political science to understand how Americans throughout its history have interpreted and applied the Bible to legal and political issues.

Download or read book A Woman of Joy written by Dee Brestin and published by Chariot Victor Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dee Brestin knows many women long for Bible studies that apply the Scriptures to a woman's heart and life! The letters of John have themes which are of particular interest to women: love, fellowship, confidence, hospitality, and helping our children walk in the truth. John's letters are timeless, and he tells us that our joy will be complete as our fellowship with Christ spreads to those around us (1 John 1:4). Women are like dominoes--our lives profoundly affect the direction of those in our circles of influence. As we experience greater fellowship with Jesus, those we love are motivated to begin maturing in their relationship with Him as well. This guide is one of a series by Dee especially for women. Dee Brestin ministers to the hearts of women with her speaking and writing. Besides this series of studies, she is the author of The Friendship of Women, The Lifestyles of Christian Women, And Then We Were Women (Victor), and eight Fisherman Bible study guides (Shaw). She and her husband Steve are the parents of five children and live in Kearney, Nebraska.

Book A Letter to the Ladies

Download or read book A Letter to the Ladies written by Irene S. Givens-royal and published by . This book was released on 2005-02-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a frank and engagingly casual style, the author has penned this book, an open discussion of how God impacts every part of a woman's life, from work to relationships to marriage to family - but only if we let Him. It seems we women have forgotten how to let go and let God, believing society's lie that we must be superwomen who have it all - career, husband, family, and material comforts - and we also expect ourselves to provide it all. We don't want to rely on the one person who can give us this and so much more we don't ask for - God. We have lost sight of our Savior, and as a result, we are losing everything in our lives, feeling empty and bereft.
