Book Occultism in a Global Perspective

Download or read book Occultism in a Global Perspective written by Henrik Bogdan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the ideas and practices associated with occultism is a rapidly growing branch of contemporary scholarship. However, most research has focused on English and French speaking areas and has not addressed the wider spread and significance of occultism. Occultism in a Global Perspective presents a broad international overview. Essays range across the German magical order of the Fraternitas Saturni, esoteric Satanism in Denmark, sexual magic in Colombia and the reception of occultism in modern Turkey, India and the former Yugoslavia. As any other form of cultural practice, the occult is not isolated from its social, discursive, religious, and political environment. By studying occultism in its global context, the book offers insights into the reciprocal relationships that colour and shape regional occultism.

Book A Free Woman on God s Earth

Download or read book A Free Woman on God s Earth written by Jana Laiz and published by Crow Flies Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Free Woman On God's Earth" The True Story of Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman, The Slave Who Won Her Freedom is the inspiring story of Mumbet, an enslaved African woman who lived in Sheffield, Massachusetts during Revolutionary War times. Owned by John and Hannah Ashley, Mumbet served eleven patriots as they wrote impassioned letters to King George demanding freedom from the British. Mumbet could not help but overhear their conversations. These Declaration of Grievances became the Sheffield Resolves, or the Sheffield Declaration, the precursor to the Declaration of Independence and the irony of the sentiments in this document was not lost on Mumbet. After a particularly brutal incident, where Mistress Hannah Ashley intends to strike a servant girl with a hot poker from the hearth, Mumbet puts her own arm up to block the blow and is burned to the bone. When she finally heals, she realizes she can no longer live enslaved and waits for the right moment. The moment comes in 1780 with the ratification of the Massachusetts Constitution, making into the law the words, "All men are created free and equal." Mumbet takes these words and used them to sue for her freedom. On August 21, 1781, she becomes a free woman.

Book A Woman s Place Leader Guide

Download or read book A Woman s Place Leader Guide written by Foundry Media LLC and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to women and work, there is often an “us-versus-them” mentality, dividing women according to the choices they make. Yet all women have a shared calling to work in a way that glorifies God—whether it be in the office, home, ministry, or beyond. In this eight-week study built around Katelyn Beaty’s A Woman’s Place book, groups will explore the idea of a woman’s work. The book contains profiles of eight women, considerations of Scripture, and reflections on the meaning of work. This study provides additional Bible study resources, journal prompts, and questions for reflection to help groups to move through Beaty’s message in a rich and meaningful way with an emphasis on Scripture and prayer. Through authentic discussion, women will be encouraged to affirm one another in their calling to engage in the holy act of work, regardless of their specific choices. The Leader Guide contains eight session plan outlines, complete with discussion points and questions, group activities, prayers, and leader helps for facilitating a group. Other components for the study, each available separately, include a Praticipant Guide and a DVD (with closed captioning) featuring eight sessions, each approximately eight minutes long presenting Beaty and guest interviewees.
