Book Reading Primary Sources

Download or read book Reading Primary Sources written by Miriam Dobson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the historian approach primary sources? How do interpretations differ? How can they be used to write history? Reading Primary Sources goes a long way to providing answers for these questions. In the first part of this unique volume, the chapters give an overview of both traditional and new methodological approaches to the use of sources, analyzing the way that these have changed over time. The second part gives an overview of twelve different types of written sources, including letters, opinion polls, surveillance reports, diaries, novels, newspapers, and dreams, taking into account the huge expansion in the range of written primary sources used by historians over the last thirty years. This book is an up-to-date introduction into the historical context of these different genres, the ways they should be read, the possible insights and results these sources offer and the pitfalls of their interpretation. All of the chapters push the reader beyond a conventional understanding of source texts as mere "reflections" of a given reality, instead fostering an understanding of how each of the various genres has to be seen as a medium in its own right. Taking examples of sources from around the globe, and also including a student-friendly further reading section, this is the perfect companion for every student of history who wants to engage with sources.

The first soup kitchen was a very small, dark little place. It was really only a small space p, under an archway, and cut off from J the rest of the station by a door of sacking stretched on a wooden frame. The actual space within the room measured eight feet by seven feet, and in this not very lordly apartment was a small stove which burned, and a large one which didn't. There were a few kettles and pots, and a little coffee grinder, too, with a picture of a blue windmill on it, for which I conceived an earnest hatred, such as inanimate things sometimes inspire in one! It was so silly and so inadequate, and in order to get enough ground coffee its futile little handle had to be turned all day, while the blue windmill looked busy and did nothing, and was perfectly cheerful all the time. With these not very useful tools to work with (and it was very difficult to buy anything at (1,866) 7 Furnes at that time), there came a rush of work, which is not unusual in war time, and there was a great deal to do at the kitchen. The first convoy of wounded men used to come in about 10.30 a.m. They arrived always in one of those road trains which are common in Belgium, and which make circuits and stop at various small stations. We used to hear a horn blown, and then the noisy outer door of the station slammed, and we knew the train-load of men had arrived. The "sitting cases" were always brought in first. These were men damaged for the most part in their feet or hands, or with superficial scalp wounds, or frostbitten. They hobbled in, or were carried on men's backs, or leaned against some comrade's shoulder. And across the entrance hall of the station went, day and night, a long stream of them, to pass under the archway, and out at the other...

Book Notes from a Colored Girl

Download or read book Notes from a Colored Girl written by Karsonya Wise Whitehead and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical biography provides a scholarly analysis of the personal diaries of a young, freeborn mulatto woman during the Civil War years. In Notes from a Colored Girl, Karsonya Wise Whitehead examines the life and experiences of Emilie Frances Davis through a close reading of three pocket diaries she kept from 1863 to 1865. Whitehead explores Davis’s worldviews and politics, her perceptions of both public and private events, her personal relationships, and her place in Philadelphia’s free black community in the nineteenth century. The book also includes a six-chapter historical reconstruction of Davis’s life. While Davis’s entries provide brief, daily snapshots of her life, Whitehead interprets them in ways that illuminate nineteenth-century black American women’s experiences. Whitehead’s contribution of edited text and original narrative fills a void in scholarly documentation of women who dwelled in spaces between white elites, black entrepreneurs, and urban dwellers of every race and class. Drawing on scholarly traditions from history, literature, feminist studies, and sociolinguistics, Whitehead investigates Davis’s diary both as a complete literary artifact and in terms of her specific daily entries. With few primary sources written by black women during this time in history, Davis’s diary is a rare and extraordinarily valuable historical artifact.
