Book excerpt: This fictional memoir, set in a blue-collar neighborhood movie theater of a Midwestern city, will remind the reader how quickly the past fades and yet how powerfully it persists unrecognized below the surface of later conscious decisions. Alternately comic, nostalgic, reflective, and even whimsical, the narrator recalls his tenure as the doorman and general flunky of the Imperial Theater threatened by the competition of television. He gradually drifts into a partnership with the long time woman manager, desperate to keep the theater going as a community institution, to restore with his free labor and her personal expense the dilapidated condition of the theater and to change the format from traditional B films to musicals of the 40's and 50's. The memoir itself is a form of restoration, a reliving in his imagination of a long ago apprenticeship in the workplace, which stood in sharp contrast to the sheltered enclave of family and school. He encounters a rich gallery of characters, some of whom assume the role of mentor, advocating alternative values and a wider horizon of possibilities, while revealing at the same time the conflicting, ambiguous, and bittersweet consequences in their own lives that foreshadow the adult world he is about to enter.

Book excerpt: Poetry. VIGIL is an ode to creating--to following a path from a dimly-lit home through a quiet wood, to the banks of a watercourse and back again. This collection, Chiyuma Elliott's second, is set across a range of physical and formal landscapes that are visited by charming spirits, Ambition, Love, Ghost, and Bird. In the company of these guides, VIGIL contemplates life, loss, and what sustains us. These poems are devotions to the kinds of vigils each of us has known: telling stories about the stars, planting a garden, and awaiting a lover's late-night return home. Introspective while eschewing isolation, VIGIL untangles the complexities of love, loss, and healing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vigil and Vision: New Sonnets January. This is the bitter birth-month of the year. The sun looms large against the leaden sky, Rayless and red, as 'twere a giant's eye, That through the mists of death abroad doth peer: The fettered earth is dumb for frosty cheer, Veiling its face to let the blast go by. Who said, "Spring cometh"? Out upon the lie! Spring's dead and buried: January's here. Shut to the door; heap logs upon the fire. If in your heart there harbour yet some heat, Some sense of flowers and light and Summer-sweet, In some half-fabulous dream of days foregone Remembered, feed withal hope's funeral pyre, So you may live to look upon the dawn. February. How long, o Lord, how long the Winter's woes? Is it to purge the world of sin and stain That in its winding-sheet it stands again For penance, pining in the shrouded snows? Methinks, I do remember of the rose To have heard fable in some far domain Of old fantastic dreams and fancies vain; But what in sooth it was, God only knows' Was ever aught but Winter in the land Was ever snow time past and Springtime come, To bless the brown earth with her flowerful hands? Well nigh the cuckoo's call, the wild bee's hum Have we forgot. Yet, through the chill snow-cope The kindly crocus blooms and bids us hope. Book excerpt: A rich and exciting new urban fantasy, perfect for fans of Harry Dresden and Peter Grant. Verity Fassbinder has her feet in two worlds. The daughter of one human and one Weyrd parent, she has very little power herself, but does claim unusual strength and the ability to walk between one world and the other as a couple of her talents. A rarity, she is charged with keeping the peace, and ensuring the Weyrd remain hidden. But now Sirens are dying, illegal wine made from the tears of human children is for sale - and in the hands of those who hold to old, dangerous ways - and someone has released an unknown and terrifyingly destructive force on the streets of Brisbane. Verity must investigate, or risk ancient forces carving the world apart. Vigil is the first book in award-winning author Angela Slatter's Verity Fassbinder series. 'Slatter's work is excellent, and eminently readable . . . It's easy to see how she's managed to make such an impact on the genre' - British Fantasy Society

Book Feline Clinical Parasitology

Download or read book Feline Clinical Parasitology written by Dwight D. Bowman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-08 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are books available dealing with canine parasitology, there is at present no book detailing parasites that offers clinical information specific to felines. Cats differ significantly from dogs in their parasitic infections and infestations. Although dogs and cats do share a few parasites, the vast majority of the parasites of these pets are specific to either cats or dogs, not to both. This must-have reference offers an in-depth examination of feline parasites. Topics covered include parasite identification, history, geographic distribution, pathogeneisis, epidemiology, zoonosis, diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention. Because of the immense worldwide popularity of cats and due to the amount of travel undertaken by cats and their owners, the authors have produced a book that is international in scope. Consequently, this exhaustive reference has strong appeal to practitioners and veterinary parasitologists in North America and around the world.

Book Sheep s Vigil by a Fervent Person

Download or read book Sheep s Vigil by a Fervent Person written by Fernando Pessoa and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A temporary move to Toronto in the winter of 2000, a twisted ankle, an empty house -- all inspired Moure as she read Alberto Caeiro/Fernando Pessoa's classic long poem O Guardador de Rebanhos. For fun, she started to translate, altering tones and vocabularies. From the Portuguese countryside and roaming sheep of 1914, a 21st century Toronto emerged, its neighbourhoods still echoing the 1950s, their dips and hollows, hordes of wild cats, paved creeks. Her poem became a translation, a transcreation, the jubilant and irrepressible vigil of a fervent person. "Suddenly," says Moure impishly, "I had found my master." Caeiro's sheep were his thoughts and his thoughts, he claimed, were all sensations. Moure's sheep are stray cats and from her place in Caeiro's poetry, she creates a woman alive in an urban world where the rural has not vanished, where the archaic suffuses us even when we do not beckon it, and yet the present tense floods us fully.

Now, Grace and Minnie Maude set off to rescue Charlie. Wentworth’s only hope, he believes, is his old friend Henry Rathbone, who volunteers to search for the wayward young man with the help of two new companions—Squeaky Robinson, a reformed brothel-keeper, and Crow, a mysterious slum doctor. Book excerpt: From the National Book Award-winning, bestselling author of Three Junes comes "an engrossing, richly drawn and exquisitely told story of small-town residents grappling with the difficulties of changing times" (People). “Full of secrets and surprises...A must-read.” —J. Courtney Sullivan, author of Friends and Strangers When two unexpected visitors arrive in an insular coastal village, they threaten the equilibrium of a community already confronting climate instability, political violence, and domestic upheavals. A decade from now, in the historic town of Vigil Harbor, there is a rash of divorces among the yacht-club set, a marine biologist despairs at the state of the world, a spurned wife is bent on revenge, and the renowned architect Austin Kepner pursues a passion for building homes designed to withstand the escalating fury of relentless storms. Austin’s stepson, Brecht, has dropped out of college in New York and returned home after narrowly escaping one of the terrorist acts that, like hurricanes, have become increasingly common. Then two strangers arrive: a stranded traveler with subversive charms and a widow seeking clues about a past lover with ties to Austin—a woman who may have been more than merely human. These strangers and their hidden motives come together unexpectedly in an incident that endangers lives—including Brecht’s—with dramatic repercussions for the entire town. Vigil Harbor reveals Julia Glass in all her virtuosity, braiding multiple voices and dazzling strands of plot into a story where mortal longings and fears intersect with immortal mysteries of the deep as well as of the heart.

Book The Grimalkin Almanac in Four Parts Winter

Download or read book The Grimalkin Almanac in Four Parts Winter written by Imeldra Moonpaw and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a busy, present day clowder or settlement we can often lose sight of the more subtle things in life - the quiet rustling of the leaves on a summer day, the trilling of the nightingale in the bush, or the happy gurgling of a stream as it makes its way down to the sea. Our whiskers must always be atwitch for the first sign of the turning season may be missed in the hustle and bustle of life - the hint of red on the oak leaf, a small gathering of swallows at the end of summer, and the slight chilly bite on the nose that tells us winter is on the way. And so, we refer to our books, our calendars and our almanacs to prepare for the tasks at paw and take heart that, although our existences may change over the course of our lifetimes, the activities and responsibilities of living within a community do not and will forever keep our clowders and settlements going. So it has been for many thousands of years and will continue for many thousands to come.
