Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII. DR. NANSEN AT HOME. A House is ofttimes the true reflex of its owner's mind. A man naturally surrounds himself with the things that most appeal to his tastes. The books he most loves are on the shelves. If he have travelled, relics from foreign countries surround the room. Should he be musical, his best-loved instrument finds an honoured place. If artistic, the walls will be covered with such art as most appeals to his intelligence. The home necessarily becomes the expression of its owner's tastes. It is an old saying, that "you never know a man till you are married to him," and the words apply equally that "one never knows a man at all until one has seen him in his own home." One must know him in the midst of his household gods, every one of which can unfold a page in the history of its owner's life. Lysaker Station is some half-dozen miles from Christiania. Our little engine, almost enveloped in its snow-plough, had dragged us along slowly, and even to accomplish that short distance had taken nearly twice the allotted time. There, on the platform, awaiting our arrival, stood Dr. Fridtjof Nansen. It was a bitterly cold day--the thermometer registered 9 below zero, Fahr., or 410 of frost--and there he stood without even an overcoat, merely wearing the gray ski uniform which suited his lithesome figure so, well. His hands were enveloped in a pair of the usual Norwegian knitted "baby" gloves, without any fingers, only a thumb. All Northern nations know the advisability of keeping the extremities covered, and consequently always wear gloves, even when fishing! "Welcome, a thousand welcomes to Lysaker!" Nansen said, warmly shaking us by the hand. "But you have brought cold weather with you; I hope you will not suffer from it...".

He gained prominence at various points in his life as an explorer, scientist, diplomat, and humanitarian. He led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, traversing the island on cross-country skis. He won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14′ during his Fram expedition of 1893—1896. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.

Book Nansen

Download or read book Nansen written by Roland Huntford and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the great polar explorers of the early twentieth century - Amundsen, Shackleton, Scott in the South and Peary in the North - looms the spirit of Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), the mentor of them all. He was the father of modern polar exploration, the last act of territorial discovery before the leap into space began. Nansen was a prime illustration of Carlyle's dictum that 'the history of the world is but the biography of great men'. He was not merely a pioneer in the wildly diverse fields of oceanography and skiing, but one of the founders of neurology. A restless, unquiet Faustian spirit, Nansen was a Renaissance Man born out of his time into the new Norway of Ibsen and Grieg. He was an artist and historian, a diplomat who had dealings with Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, and played a part in the Versailles Peace Conference, where he helped the Americans in their efforts to contain the Bolsheviks. He also undertook famine relief in Russia. Finally, working for the League of Nations as both High Commissioner for Refugees and High Commissioner for the Repatriation of Prisoners of War, he became the first of the modern media-conscious international civil servants.
