Book Winning Chess Combinations

Download or read book Winning Chess Combinations written by Yasser Seirawan and published by Everyman Chess. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinations are the central element in chess; they make the game so magical and captivating. The beautiful point of sacrificing a queen, the strongest piece, in order to checkmate with a lowly pawn brings a smile of joy to all chess lovers. Virtually all chess games possess a combination, either one hidden in the shadows of analysis carefully avoided or one that provides a decisive blow. Winning Chess Combinations is a unique work that doesn't merely repeat the wonderfully rich and vast numbers of combinations, asking readers to solve a particular diagrammed position; it is a work that is far more realistic. A combination involves a sacrifice upsetting the balance of forces, but will it work or tragically boomerang? The reader is invited to solve this critical question by identifying the advantages that a specific position holds which might make the combination successful.

Book SAP HANA and ESS A Winning Combination

Download or read book SAP HANA and ESS A Winning Combination written by Olaf Weiser and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAP HANA on IBM® POWER® is an established HANA solution with which customers can run HANA-based analytic and business applications on a flexible IBM Power based infrastructure. IT assets, such as servers, storage, and skills and operation procedures, can easily be used and reused instead of enforcing more investment into dedicated SAP HANA only appliances. In this scenario, IBM SpectrumTM Scale as the underlying block storage and files system adds further benefits to this solution stack to take advantage of scale effects, higher availability, simplification, and performance. With the IBM Elastic StorageTM Server (ESS) based on IBM Spectrum ScaleTM, RAID capabilities are added to the file system. By using the intelligent internal logic of the IBM Spectrum Scale RAID code, reasonable performance and significant disk failure recovery improvements are achieved. This IBM RedpaperTM publication focuses on the benefits and advantages of implementing a HANA solution on top of IBM Spectrum Scale storage file system. This paper is intended to help experienced administrators and IT specialists to plan and set up an IBM Spectrum Scale cluster and configure an ESS for SAP HANA workloads. It provides important tips and bestpreferred practices about how to manage IBM Spectrum Scale''s availability and performance. If you are familiar with ESS, IBM Spectrum Scale, and IBM Spectrum Scale RAID, and you need only the pertinent documentation about how to configure a IBM Spectrum Scale cluster with an ESS for SAP HANA, see Chapter 5, "IBM Spectrum Scale customization for HANA" on page 25. Before reading this IBM Redpaper publication, you should be familiar with the basic concepts of IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM Spectrum Scale RAID. This IBM Redpaper publication can be helpful for architects and specialists who are planning an SAP HANA on POWER deployment with the IBM Spectrum Scale file system. For more information about planning considerations for Power, see the SAP HANA on Power Planning Guide.

Book Fair Trade and Organic Agriculture

Download or read book Fair Trade and Organic Agriculture written by Priyanka Parvathi and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The markets for organic and fair trade certified commodities are growing rapidly, with environmentally sound and more equitable certification systems likely to offer benefits for both small-scale farmers and society at large. Despite much debate about their contribution to sustainability, there has been little scientific analysis, so it is vital to assess if it is technically and economically feasible to meet growing consumer demands regarding food safety, quality and ethics through smallholder and marginal producers. Overall, there is a need to explore the potential of these certification systems as emerging areas in research and development cooperation. This book is an important read for researchers and students in agricultural and development economics, and it is also a useful resource for policy makers and practitioners involved in organic and fair trade agriculture.

Book Understanding the Fundamentals of the U S Presidential Election System

Download or read book Understanding the Fundamentals of the U S Presidential Election System written by Alexander S. Belenky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the U.S. presidential election system to analyze the basic principles underlying the design of the existing system and those at the heart of competing proposals for improving the system. The book discusses how the use of some election rules embedded in the U.S. Constitution and in the Presidential Succession Act may cause skewed or weird election outcomes and election stalemates. The book argues that the act may not cover some rare though possible situations which the Twentieth Amendment authorizes Congress to address. Also, the book questions the constitutionality of the National Popular Vote Plan to introduce a direct popular presidential election de facto, without amending the Constitution, and addresses the plan’s “Achilles’ Heel.” In particular, the book shows that the plan may violate the Equal Protection Clause from the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution. Numerical examples are provided to show that the counterintuitive claims of the NPV originators and proponents that the plan will encourage presidential candidates to “chase” every vote in every state do not have any grounds. Finally, the book proposes a plan for improving the election system by combining at the national level the “one state, one vote” principle – embedded in the Constitution – and the “one person, one vote” principle. Under this plan no state loses its current Electoral College benefits while all the states gain more attention of presidential candidates.

Book The Blessings of Disaster

  • Author : Michel Bruneau
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2022-11-08
  • ISBN : 163388824X
  • Pages : 475 pages

Download or read book The Blessings of Disaster written by Michel Bruneau and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we doomed? As individuals, certainly, eventually, inevitably. But as a species? As a civilization? Leading catastrophe engineer Michel Bruneau thinks perhaps not. The Blessings of Disaster draws on knowledge from multiple disciplines to illustrate how our civilization’s future successes and failures in dealing with societal threats—be they pandemics, climate change, overpopulation, monetary collapse, and nuclear holocaust—can be predicted by observing how we currently cope with and react to natural and technological disasters. Maybe most importantly, this entertaining and often counter-intuitive book shows how we can think in better ways about disasters, to strengthen and extend our existence as both individuals and as a species. When it comes to rare extreme events, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornados, volcanic eruptions, technological accidents, terrorist attacks, pandemics, and even existential threats, it is in our nature to set ourselves up for disasters because the gamble may be worth it. But only maybe. The Blessing of Disaster is the very real story of the relationship between humans and disasters – and it’s not a simple one. Bringing together his decades-long career spanning the globe as an earthquake and disaster engineer, detailed catastrophe case studies from extreme events like Japan’s Kobe earthquake and category 5 hurricanes in the American South, along with thoughtful and practical solutions, Bruneau provides a thorough examination of the structural challenges that face today’s (and tomorrow’s) world. How we cope with today’s threats is indicative of what the future holds. Contrary to popular forecasts, it is not all gloom and doom – but some of it definitely is.

Book excerpt: The rise in legalized gambling in the United States over the last fifteen years has led to much debate among scientists and practitioners about how to conceptualize and study the phenomenon, treat persons who experience difficulties controlling their level of play, and prevent individuals from becoming problem or 'pathological' gamblers. The current volume brings together a group of basic and applied behavior scientists to discuss these matters. Gambling is designed to allow readers familiar with the general concepts and principles of behavior analysis to understand how the field is addressing the area of gambling. Graduate students taking classes in behavioral applications, or those enrolled in seminars specific to gambling, will find this collection of papers a vital resource. The book will also be useful to clinicians interested in understanding the basic and conceptual foundations that underlie successful prevention and treatment approaches.
