Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique concept frames Richard Foreman's ';Wilful Misunderstandings', a collection of short stories from Lepus Books. In each of these thirty-four tales the author takes a word, phrase or saying, twisting it into a new meaning, and by extension a new reality. The stories that emerge extend across a diverse stylistic range through sci-fi, adventure, crime, romance, horror, folk tale and magic realism. The many worlds of ';Wilful Misunderstandings' can be rampantly surrealistic at times, not so very different from our own at others. A ';parapet' becomes a beast assigned as a familiar to would-be mystics. If you go out and ';stretch your legs' you come home taller. ';Accolade' is a drink that gives you a pat on the back. But in each tale, readers will meet engaging characters in intriguing situations - some humorous, some perilous, some with deep emotional resonance.

Book Sidgwick s Ethics and Victorian Moral Philosophy

Download or read book Sidgwick s Ethics and Victorian Moral Philosophy written by Jerome B. Schneewind and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Sidgwick's The Methods of Ethics challenges comparison, as no other work in moral philosophy, with Aristotle's Ethics in the depth of its understanding of practical rationality, and in its architectural coherence it rivals the work of Kant. In this historical, rather than critical study, Professor Schneewind shows how Sidgwick's arguments and conclusions represent rational developments of the work of Sidgwick's predecessors, and brings out the nature and structure of the reasoning underlying his position.

Book excerpt: ""Using to the full the last half century's great accessions to the comparative study of religion, [Dodds] has given a coherent and convincing reconstruction of the Dionysiac background--and, indeed, foreground--of the play, illustrating it with many instructive non-Greek and modern parallels.... Equally instructive and stimulating is the acute analysis of the play's dramatic elements, its characters, scenes, conflicts, actions, speeches.... This edition far surpasses its predecessors in vitality, sympathy, and scope."--W.B. Stanford, Hermathena LXV. Including a comprehensive discussion of the play's background and an incisive assessment of its dramatic structure, this edition makes an outstanding contribution to Euripides scholarship."--Amazon.

Book Making Words Sing

  • Author : Jonathan Dunsby
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2004-06-10

Download or read book Making Words Sing written by Jonathan Dunsby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-10 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a classical song a song? In a wide-ranging 2004 discussion, covering such contrasting composers as Brahms and Berberian, Schubert and Kurtág, Jonathan Dunsby considers the nature of vocality in songs of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The essence and scope of poetic and literary meaning in the Lied tradition is subjected to close scrutiny against the backdrop of 'new musicological' thinking and music-theoretical orthodoxies. The reader is thus offered the best insights available within an evidence-based approach to musical discourse. Schoenberg figures conspicuously as both songsmith and theorist, and some easily comprehensible Schenkerian approaches are used to convey ideas of musical time and expressive focus. In this work of scholarship and theoretical depth, Professor Dunsby's highly original approach and engaging style will ensure its appeal to all practising musicians and students of Romantic and modern music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth has always been a central preoccupation of philosophy in allits forms and traditions. Yet in the late twentieth century truth became suddenly rather unfashionable. The precedence given to assortedpolitical and ideological agendas, along with the rise of relativism, postmodernism and pseudoscience in academia, led to a decline both of truth as a serious subject, and an intellectual tradition thatbegan with the Enlightenment. Why Truth Matters is a timely, incisive and entertaining look at how and why modern thought and culture lost sight of the importance of truth. It is also an eloquent and inspiring argument for restoring truth to its rightful place. Jeremy Stangroom and Ophelia Benson, editors of the successful butterfliesandwheels website-itself established to "fight fashionable nonsense"-identify and debunk such senselessness, and the spurious claims made for it, in all its forms. Their account ranges over religious fundamentalism, Holocaust denial, the challenges of postmodernism and deconstruction, the wilful misinterpretation of evolutionary biology, identity politics and wishful thinking. Why Truth Matters is both a rallying cry for the enlightened vision and an essential read for anyone who's everbeen bored, frustrated, bewildered or plain enraged by the worst excesses of the fashionable intelligentsia.

Book Negotiating Ageing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Simon Biggs
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-11-15
  • ISBN : 131736550X
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Negotiating Ageing written by Simon Biggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is growing older and this is a historically unprecedented phenomenon. Negotiating such change, personally, socially and for governments and international organisations requires an act of cultural adaptation. Two key questions arise: What is the purpose of a long life? and How do we adapt to societies where generations are of approximately the same size? A number of pre-existing narratives can be identified; however, it is argued that contemporary policies have produced a premature answer which may eclipse the potential arising from lifecourse change. In this book Simon Biggs discusses ways of interrogating these questions and the adaptations we make to them. Four major areas, all of which have been suggested as solutions to population ageing, are critically assessed, including work as an answer, the relationship between work, ageing and health, narratives of spirit, belief and wisdom, the body and the natural, anti-ageing medicine, critical approaches to dementia, plus family and intergenerational relations. This book is particiularly useful for those trying to make sense of population ageing and negotiate solutions. It describes a number of concepts that can be used to assess what we are told about a long life and how generations can adapt together. With the cultural landscape moving away from traditional interpretations of old age, the question of adult ageing is of growing interest to a number of groups. This book is essential reading for social and health-care workers, other helping professionals, policy makers, social scientists and all who encounter the prospect of a long life.

Book A History of Zoroastrianism Zoroastrianism under Macedonian and Roman Rule

Download or read book A History of Zoroastrianism Zoroastrianism under Macedonian and Roman Rule written by Mary Boyce and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces the history of Zoroastrianism at times and places where its existence has previously been largely ignored, or treated only episodically. Literary, archaeological and numismatic evidence has been drawn on (some of it only recently brought to light), and local developments are distinguished. In Iran itself some 200 years of Macedonian rule had little effect on the national religion. To the east, Zoroastrianism survived in the Greco-Bactrian kingdoms and under Mauryan suzereinty, where it came into contact with Buddhism. In Eastern Mediterranean lands it was maintained by Iranian expatriates well down into Roman imperial times. They adopted Greek for their written tongue, and Zoroastrian doctrines thus became known in the Greco-Roman world. Study is made accordingly of Zoroastrian contributions to Hellenistic thought, and to Judaism, Christianity and Mithraism; and an excursus provides a thorough reassessment of the Zoroastrian pseudepigrapha.
