Tensions had been rising since the year before when the company had annexed the state of Oudh. Feeling their religion and custom were undermined and threatened the sepoys of the East India Company's Bengal Presidency Army rebelled. Katherine Mary Bartrum was there to witness it all. Her diary records a day by day account of life as one of the besieged, and along with the letters that are included, give an intense image of this time. As those around are struck down by bullets and disease, Bartrum does her best to survive and help those in need including her very sick infant child. Bartrum's story is particularly tragic as she spends hour upon hour waiting for her husband and the British forces to break the siege and free those trapped, only to find out that he had been struck down with a bullet to the temple. This heart-rending account provides an insight into the Indian Mutiny, demonstrating the horrors of war from the perspective of a female civilian. Katherine Mary Bartrum's A Widow's Reminiscences of the Siege of Lucknow was published shortly after she had returned to England in 1858.

Book excerpt: Two enthralling Lucknow diaries in one special edition The siege and relief of the Residency at Lucknow is one of the principal conflicts of the Great Mutiny and became an abiding symbol of the spirit, resolution and fortitude of the men and women-military and civilian-that made the British Empire the globally dominating power it was in the Victorian age. It held a well deserved reputation for it was a scene of fierce fighting as the besieged sought to keep out attacking rebellious sepoy forces and their allies and the relieving force had to battle its way into the garrison on two occasions. These views of Lucknow are somewhat different. Leonaur has joined together two diaries, each by a female member of the besieged garrison, which chronicle-on a day by day basis-the experiences of those within the Residency's battered walls. This great value book enables the reader to compare two different perspectives on the same events. This is especially interesting because the two women came from different backgrounds and occupied different social spheres and so inevitably saw different aspects of the activities of the garrison, brought their focus onto different elements of it and evaluated their experiences in different ways. The first diary came from the pen of a civilian lady, the wife of a Churchman, and provides much valuable insight into the suffering of the families in Lucknow. The second diary is by a soldier's wife. Colonel Case of the 32nd was killed early in the siege, but military matters remained very much his widows concern among her other more domestic responsibilities. An excellent two-for-the-price-of-one view of a momentous event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Defence of Lucknow is a memoir of the dramatic events of 1857, when the native sepoy troops of the Bengal army dramatically rose up against their colonial masters. The ensuing insurrection was to become the bloodiest in the history of the British Empire, with several thousand killed on both sides. With only 1,700 men, including loyal sepoys, the British fought off many ferocious attacks. The author describes the rebels’ desperate attempts to breach the walls, as well as their extensive use of tunnels. After ninety days, with the British reduced to just 600 soldiers, relief finally arrived. The response to the mutiny was fearsome. Reinforced by Gurkhas from Nepal and the Queen’s regiments fresh from the Crimea War, the British began a bloody campaign to re-establish their rule in India. Whole villages were hanged for real or imagined sympathy for the mutineers. Later, convicted mutineers were lashed to the muzzles of cannon and had a roundshot fired through their body. It was cruel punishment known by the Indians as ‘the devil’s wind’.

Book The Making of Indian English Literature

Download or read book The Making of Indian English Literature written by Subhendu Mund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of Indian English Literature brings together seventeen well-researched essays of Subhendu Mund with a long introduction by the author historicising the development of the Indian writing in English while exploring its identity among the many appellations tagged to it. The volume demonstrates, contrary to popular perceptions, that before the official introduction of English education in India, Indians had already tried their hands in nearly all forms of literature: poetry, fiction, drama, essay, biography, autobiography, book review, literary criticism and travel writing. Besides translation activities, Indians had also started editing and publishing periodicals in English before 1835. Through archival research the author brings to discussion a number of unknown and less discussed texts which contributed to the development of the genre. The work includes exclusive essays on such early poets and writers as Kylas Chunder Dutt, Shoshee Chunder Dutt, Toru Dutt, Mirza Moorad Alee Beg, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Swami Vivekananda, H. Dutt, and Sita Chatterjee; and historiographical studies on the various aspects of the genre. The author also examines the strategies used by the early writers to indianise the western language and the form of the novel. The present volume also demonstrates how from the very beginning Indian writing in English had a subtle nationalist agenda and created a space for protest literature. The Making of Indian English Literature will prove an invaluable addition to the studies in Indian writing in English as a source of reference and motivation for further research.
