Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Port Royal Few of the many sad stories of Christian history are much sadder than is the story of Port Royal. The persecution of Port Royalists and the destruction of the Abbey were as foolish as they were criminal. But it is ever to be remembered that no suffering can be really in vain, and no seeming defeat but carries with it an element of victory. I cannot let this book go out into the world without some words of gratitude to those friends without whose generous help it could never have been written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Enthusiasts of Port-Royal If it please your Majesty, in writing to His Holiness you might say that you have particular knowledge of the persons whom they call Jansenists, that they are no other than very Catholic and very much attached to the Holy See. In reality, while the dogma was a lifeless thing locked up in the Halls of the Sorbonne, the working out of the peculiar system of religion which the name Jansenism stands for went on regardless of theological disputes, alive and pulsating with vital fire in the Monastery of port-royal. Here, even in the midst of later trouble there was, says sainte-beuve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacqueline Pascal: Convent Life at Port Royal Pascal deserves to rank among the foremost names of the race. In that age of French literature which was emblazoned with the most profuse and gorgeous array of talent, none of his contemporaries surpassed, if any equalled him in reach and depth of thought, clearness and force of expression, and an eloquence graceful, winning, witty, sublime, or overwhelming, as the theme and the occasion might demand. In Science he enrolled himself amongst those of most inventive and profound genius. To Religion and its defence he brought the homage and consecration of powers which sceptics like Condorcet and Voltaire could not venture to scorn, nor aspire even to rival. And he was not a thinker, dwelling apart from the great controversies, and the critical, practical issues of his time. He was a power in his age. Upon the history of his Church he graved indelibly his mark in the Provincial Letters, working thereby an immediate and withal an enduring influence which has no counterpart in literary history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Port Royal, Written at the Time of the Civil War With Commodore Dupont's capture, on November 7, 1861, of two earth forts which the rebels had recently thrown up at Hilton Head and Bay Point, South Caro lina, the Sea Island region became Union territory. The planters and their families having ed precipi fately, the United States Government found itself in possession of almost everything that had been theirs, the two chief items being the largest cotton crop ever yet raised there, nearly ready for exporting, and several hundred demoralized, destitute slaves, the number of whom was daily being increased by refugees and returned fugitives. The negroes were plainly a burden some problem, the cotton a valuable piece of property. The first thing to do was obvious, and fortunately the same cotton-agents who were despatched by the authorities at Washington to collect and ship the pro perty were able, by employing negroes for the purpose, to make a beginning towards solving the problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angelique of Port-Royal: 1591-1661 With the Renaissance, Europe awoke to possibilities of knowledge and of enjoyment hitherto shrouded, but the free use of the higher senses induced a longing for the freedom of the reason. It savours, perhaps, of the miraculous that the license Of the later Renaissance did not turn more generally to the seductive doctrine of the Epicurean School, and it is true to say that when its paganism was directed into Christian channels, it was a proof of the regenerating power that dwells for ever in the Church.ale The Christian channels did not, however.
