Book excerpt: The wedding bouquet symbolizes a hope: that love will sail into the life of the person who catches it. For four guests at Abby's wedding, though, love is the last thing they're looking for. Isn't it ironic, then, that when a whirling ceiling fan disintegrates the carefully crafted nosegay, its pieces fly beyond the crowd of husband-hungry women -and parts end up in the hands of these four hardened observers? See if the bouquet/romance tradition holds true for... Felicity, the love-worn florist who's horrified to see newspaper photos of her bouquet going to pieces. Konnie, the brokenhearted widow who's determined never to let love bloom in her life again. Rosie, the caterer whose dreams are crushed flatter than her wedding cake, destroyed by a clumsy groomsman. Geoff, who quickly hands his flowers to an admiring little girl - and to her big sister, whose love for him is anything but childish. Can God use fragmented flowers to plant seeds of love in fallow hearts? Can He create a bouquet of love from the chaos in these four lives?

Book Passio SS Perpetuae Et Felicitatis Engl

Download or read book Passio SS Perpetuae Et Felicitatis Engl written by Thomas J. Heffernan and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most widely read and studied texts composed in Late Antiquity is the prison diary of Vibia Perpetua, a young woman of the elite classes who was martyred in March of the year 202 or 203 C.E. in Carthage, as part of a civic celebration honoring Caesar Geta. She was well-married and had recently become the mother of a baby son, but despite her advantages, she refused to recant her faith when she was arrested with other recent converts to Christianity. Imprisoned with her was her pregnant slave Felicity. Perpetua's steadfastness in her belief led to her martyrdom in the amphitheater. A description of the heroic deaths of both women, and the autobiography of one of the leaders of the Christian community, Saturus, is woven into Perpetua's diary by an anonymous editor, who tells us that, as they died, Perpetua, Felicity, and the other condemned Christians bid farewell with a kiss of peace. This unique and precious text survives in one Greek and in nine Latin manuscript versions. Thomas Heffernan's new study contains much that has never been done before, including a prosopography of all the individuals mentioned in the Passion, a new English translation and the first detailed historical commentary in English on the entire narrative of the Passion. It also includes a newly edited version of the Latin text based on all the extant manuscripts and - rarer still - the Greek text. He concludes the book with a complete codicological description of all of the known manuscripts and thorough scholarly indices of the text itself. Perpetua's prison diary is a revered text of early Christianity, and Heffernan's new translation and commentary brings unprecedented scholarly resources to the much-loved Passion.

Book The Wedding that Wasn t

Download or read book The Wedding that Wasn t written by Lori Wilde and published by Zebra Books. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A runaway bride sets true love in motion—from the New York Times bestselling author whose “novels are always a delight!” (Jill Shalvis, author of Almost Just Friends) On the morning Felicity Patterson was born, a bluebird crashed into the bedroom window pane and died. The superstitious midwife announced that the baby would never know true happiness. Silly stuff, of course, and Felicity doesn’t want to believe the prophesy has anything to do with the string of heartaches she’s experienced. Or the fact that bluebirds haven’t been seen in Serendipity, Texas, for decades. In any case, things are looking up. Since the town’s leading family chose her B&B to host their daughter’s society wedding, The Bluebird Inn has become the hottest venue around. Until the bride says, “I don’t!” and blows out of town on a hijacked Ducati. Rumors of a jinx have guests canceling their reservations in droves—all except Tom Loving. The retired Army officer and amateur ornithologist hopes to lure the bluebirds back to Serendipity. What does Felicity have to lose? Only her heart, it seems. But maybe it’s time for her luck to change—and love to take wing . . . Originally published in A Wedding on Bluebird Way Praise for Lori Wilde “Lori Wilde writes characters who always speak to my heart.”—RaeAnne Thayne, New York Times bestselling author “Every now and then a book comes along that touches every emotion, from heart rending tears to belly laughs. The Moonglow Sisters is a one of those rare books. From the first line to the last sigh, it was amazing.”—Carolyn Brown, New York Times bestselling author

Book excerpt: In 1941, the United Kingdom was in desperate straits, standing alone with its troops against the colossal war machine of Nazi Germany. There was always Prime Minister Winston Churchill, however, who growled his defiance to Hitler and induced in his people a determination to endure. The Adams family shared that determination and their own kind of optimism. Emma went happily into her marriage with Jonathan, while Boots's son Tim, in between his hazardous exploits as a Commando, helped his fiancee Felicity in her courageous fight against blindness, the result of a terrible injury in the bombing. Rosie Adams was due to marry Matthew Chapman from Dorset, but Chinese Lady was unsure about it. He seemed a fine enough man, but what with a lame leg that prevented him from doing his bit for his country, and the uncertainty of his garage business, she felt that he was hardly the ideal choice for such an eligible young woman as Rosie. As for Boots and his new wife Polly, they came up with some very unexpected news for the family...
