Book excerpt: Bella Bell lives a perfectly ordinary life with a perfectly ordinary office job in suburban California, where she longs to break free from her perfect sister's shadow. So when Little Bear Café chooses her to train its new franchisee in Tokyo for the summer, she jumps at the chance. But even a dream come true can get complicated. From the moment she steps on the plane, she annoys her pompous, handsome seatmate, insults her apartment manager, and gets caught up in her new neighbors' drama. And everywhere she turns, she keeps running into the arrogant stranger from her flight—and she can't seem to get him out of her head. Ryo Yamada is at the top of his game: a high-powered job, no shortage of potential girlfriends. But his life is turned upside down when his family asks him to return to Tokyo for good because of his sister's failing health. And now he finds himself avoiding his childhood friend whose feelings he doesn't return. And bumping into the irritating, pretty redhead from his flight—who may not be so bad after all. The last thing he expects is to fall in love. As the new café opening and the end of Bella's time in Tokyo draw near, Bella and Ryo grow close—until they discover their circumstances may tear them apart. Can they find their way back to each other for good?

If you enjoy stories that delve into family dynamics, grief, love, loss, self-discovery, and navigating challenging circumstances, this novella is perfect for you. Zoey Matthew is excited to celebrate her upcoming 21st birthday and begin building the life she’s always wanted. However, her dreams are shattered when her sister and brother-in-law die in a hit-and-run accident, leaving their baby, Ella, in her care. Suddenly she has to learn how to take care of an infant and juggle her new career while grieving the loss of her sister, who had been like a mom to her after their own mother abandoned them. And losing her dad at a young age right before her mom left without a word has Zoey feeling lost and less than adequate for the job of becoming a mother to Ella. Encountering frequent challenges, Zoey gives up her career to care for her niece and throws in the towel on ever having a love life since she believes no man will be interested in her—a woman with a baby. Feeling alone and vulnerable, she finds hope and joy in the presence of new friends: a kind-hearted Claudia and a charming-baby whisperer, Derek. Zoey realizes that her life can never truly be at peace until her sister’s murderer is brought to justice and she finds out who is behind the mysterious weekly grocery deliveries. Will she uncover the truth and find closure, or will the disclosures shatter her world even further? #ComingOfAge #FamilyDynamics #GriefJourney #SelfDiscovery #NewBeginnings #MotherhoodChallenges #Resilience #LoveAndLoss
Download or read book Strange Weather in Tokyo written by Hiromi Kawakami and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2013 Man Asian Literary Prize, Strange Weather in Tokyo is a story of loneliness and love that defies age. Tsukiko, thirty–eight, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, "Sensei," in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him "Sensei" ("Teacher"). He is thirty years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to a hesitant intimacy which tilts awkwardly and poignantly into love. As Tsukiko and Sensei grow to know and love one another, time's passing is marked by Kawakami's gentle hints at the changing seasons: from warm sake to chilled beer, from the buds on the trees to the blooming of the cherry blossoms. Strange Weather in Tokyo is a moving, funny, and immersive tale of modern Japan and old–fashioned romance.

Download or read book Living and Working in Japan written by Gail Boggs Popp and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 3, 1995 I traveled to Kanazawa, Japan to teach EFL (English as a Foreign Language) for an English Language Company for one year. I kept an informal journal of my experiences, thoughts and feelings as I worked there. At the end of the year, I went back to the United States to be with my family. However, in January of 1998 I was ready to return to Japan and continue teaching for the same language school as before. Toyama was the city I chose to return to. Again, as before, I kept a journal which is recorded here. While there, I glimpsed and experienced a small part of Japanese culture, found the Japanese people to be friendly and helpful and I very much enjoyed working with the students. I also visited China, which is something I had always wanted to do. I hope the reader can get an idea of what my life was like the years I lived and worked in Japan.

Book excerpt: NOW A MAX ORIGINAL SERIES. A riveting true-life tale of newspaper noir and Japanese organized crime from an American investigative journalist who "pulls the curtain back on ... [an] element of Japanese society that few Westerners ever see" (San Francisco Examiner). Jake Adelstein is the only American journalist ever to have been admitted to the insular Tokyo Metropolitan Police Press Club, where for twelve years he covered the dark side of Japan: extortion, murder, human trafficking, fiscal corruption, and of course, the yakuza. But when his final scoop exposed a scandal that reverberated all the way from the neon soaked streets of Tokyo to the polished Halls of the FBI and resulted in a death threat for him and his family, Adelstein decided to step down. Then, he fought back. In Tokyo Vice he delivers an unprecedented look at Japanese culture and searing memoir about his rise from cub reporter to seasoned journalist with a price on his head.

Download or read book Rainy Day Ramen and the Cosmic Pachinko written by Gordon Vanstone and published by Monsoon Books. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three years in Japan, Fred Buchanan is broke, unemployed and engaged in a telepathic turf war with a feral cat behind an Okinawa convenience store. Thus begins his metaphysical odyssey back to Tokyo. Along the way, symbols and sages materialize in the form of a two-fingered jazz musician, the faded tattoo on an ex-yakuza lover, an odd brood of internet cafe refugees, the kite flyer of Kabukicho and Yukie, an alluring hostess with strips of delicious thigh and strange power imbued in the etched eye on her fingernail. Charging through Shinjuku’s neon jungle, enveloped in a boozy, nicotine-stained haze, past and present collide as an empty orchestra croons a slow dance of people and place, memory and madness, loss and love. All the while, Fred struggles to be an agent of his destiny and not another ball bearing bouncing through the cosmic pachinko. Rainy Day Ramen and the Cosmic Pachinko is told as a uniquely clever mix of Murakami-esque magical realism and gonzo Japan travelogue.
