Book excerpt: From any perspective, the fact remains: Americans are who they are today because of who they became in World War II. The requirements of that period in our history -- the uprooting of families, the turbo-charging of the economy, the face-to-face encounter with brutality, the necessities of creating and feeding a war machine -- changed the country so fundamentally and profoundly that the effects are still playing out today.WWII is a tribute in words and images to this remarkable period in American history. Here are poetry and fiction, eye-witness accounts and reporters' columns tracing the evolution of a country and its soldiers, from the first rush of adrenaline to the brutal reality of war. To illustrate the text, more than 125 evocative images -- ranging from wartime sketches to iconic masterpieces -- have been culled from museums and private collections. The works of Thomas Hart Benton, Dame Laura Knight, Jacob Lawrence, Norman Rockwell, Ben Shahn, Graham Sutherland, and others are reproduced with stunning force. Throughout, there emerges a narrative of transformation amid a poignant loss of innocence, all in the name of courage and country.

Book excerpt: Political and Military Statements in Support of the Thousands of Merchant Mariners Including Those We Honor in This Book Braving the Wartime Seas “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy . . .” (September 30, 1943, dedication of USMMA campus) President Franklin D. Roosevelt “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill “This is a hundredth gone. Too damned many of these fine lads gone. Wish there was more we could do to minimize losses.” Captain Richard R. McNulty, June 16, 1943 Note on report of death of a Cadet-Midshipman “They have brought us our lifeblood and they had paid for it with some of their own . . . they have delivered their cargoes to us who needed them so badly. In war it is performance that counts.” Quotes from Douglas MacArthur, General of the U.S. Army “Yours was the first front on every ocean, and without you, no Army and Navy can survive . . . one of the vital teams participating will be recognized as the merchant seamen in dungarees . . . we of the Navy will salute you with a final ‘Well done’.” Admiral Harold R. Stark, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe “Our operations would not have been possible without the strong support of our Merchant Marine. These gallant officers and men maintained a bridge of ships across the Pacific, and bore their share of the Japanese attacks while unloading on distant islands where the struggle was still intense and the issue not yet decided.” Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Navy, Chief of Naval Operations Braving the Wartime Seas is the final book of the American Maritime History Project, a private nonprofit foundation. The quotations were drawn from www.usmm.org. Front cover was designed by Marek Mutch, Bay Village, OH.

Book excerpt: AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER! The war may be officially over, but journalist Billie Walker's search for a missing young immigrant man will plunge her right back into the danger and drama she thought she'd left behind in Europe in this thrilling tale of courage and secrets set in glamorous postwar Sydney. Sydney, 1946. Though war correspondent Billie Walker is happy to finally be home, for her the heady postwar days are tarnished by the loss of her father and the disappearance in Europe of her husband, Jack. To make matters worse, now that the war is over, the newspapers are sidelining her reporting talents to prioritize jobs for returning soldiers. But Billie is a survivor and she's determined to take control of her own future. So she reopens her late father's business, a private investigation agency, and, slowly, the women of Sydney come knocking. At first, Billie's bread and butter is tailing cheating husbands. Then, a young man, the son of European immigrants, goes missing, and Billie finds herself on a dangerous new trail that will lead up into the highest levels of Sydney society and down into its underworld. What is the young man’s connection to an exclusive dance club and a high-class auction house? When the people Billie questions about the young man start to turn up dead, Billie is thrown into the path of Detective Inspector Hank Cooper. Will he take her seriously or will he just get in her way? As the danger mounts and Billie realizes that much more than one young man’s life is at stake, it becomes clear that though the war was won, it is far from over.

Book The Athenian Tribute Lists

Download or read book The Athenian Tribute Lists written by Benjamin Dean Meritt and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 1950-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third of four volumes presenting the standard text of, and commentary on, the inscriptions that have come to be known as the "Athenian Tribute Lists." Through the tribute lists, historians have been able to study the extent and nature of the Athenian empire that grew out of the Delian League established to combat the Persians in 478/7 B.C. The inscriptions provide evidence of the money paid to Athens by other members of the League after the tribute treasury was moved from Delos to Athens in 454 B.C. The texts persist from the 450s through to the 430s, after which the evidence is very fragmentary and often undatable. This volume provides a historical commentary on the inscriptions presented in detail in Volumes I and II, tying them into a history of the Athenian empire in narrative form.
