Book Ethical Dilemmas in Genealogy

Download or read book Ethical Dilemmas in Genealogy written by Penny Walters and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people enjoy researching their family history. However, have we stopped to ask ourselves if some of the things that we are doing within our family tree research are ethical? Have you asked people's permission to include them on your tree? What will you do if you discover secrets and lies? Should you tell your grandmother that her mother was six months pregnant when she got married? How do you approach people on your DNA testing site about matching and potentially collaborating? If you were adopted, would you try and trace your biological mother? If you have a Caribbean ancestor, how would you feel if your DNA ethnicity came back as Ghanaian? A variety of ethical dilemmas will be described and discussed, and adoption, DNA testing, and ethnicity will be discussed in detail. A brief overview of the history of genealogy, and its recent move towards professionalising will be addressed. What is the potential future of genealogy? Will computers fill out our tree for us? Should babies be DNA tested at birth? Will people in the future be able to marry their robot? With more than 700 references, this book will also aid further investigation into the topics.

Book The Psychology of Searching

  • Author : Penny Walters
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-02-18

  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book The Psychology of Searching written by Penny Walters and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, family history research and compiling pedigrees was needed for landed gentry, but is now a popular hobby. Why the sudden interest? This book will look at psychological explanations as to why we are interested in our family tree and our ancestors' pasts. We will look at the psychology of contextualising ourselves, tribal territoriality, kinship, experiencing genealogical voids from separation, the notion of homelands, romanticised heritages, cultural dejavu, race memory, becoming obsessed with searching, and putting all the pieces in our jigsaw. Why do we avidly research distant ancestors that we share so little DNA with, and feel less connection to second cousins? We will discuss the role of gender and culture in devising a tree, and how we develop an apparently seamless narrative based on fragmented information we have gleaned from various sources. Do you like your name? What are the naming patterns in your community? Has social media made us lonely, and we hoard people? How do we feel about death and dying? What do you want on your gravestone? Are we searching for who they were, or who we are?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are we, and where do we come from? The fundamental drive to answer these questions is at the heart of Finding Your Roots, the companion book to the PBS documentary series seen by 30 million people. As Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. shows us, the tools of cutting-edge genomics and deep genealogical research now allow us to learn more about our roots, looking further back in time than ever before. Gates's investigations take on the personal and genealogical histories of more than twenty luminaries, including United States Congressman John Lewis, actor Robert Downey Jr., CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, President of the "Becoming American Institute" Linda Chavez, and comedian Margaret Cho. Interwoven with their moving stories of immigration, assimilation, strife, and success, Gates provides practical information for amateur genealogists just beginning archival research on their own families' roots, and he details the advances in genetic research now available to the public. The result is an illuminating exploration of who we are, how we lost track of our roots, and how we can find them again.

Book Between Home and the Front

Download or read book Between Home and the Front written by Smithsonian National Postal Museum and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The personal letters of Americans during the Civil War preserve first-person records of news, people, and emotions that humanize the horrific events of the war and provide unique insights into the conflict's effects on individuals, families, communities, and America. Often, however, only the letters sent home survived, leaving half of the story missing. Between Home and the Front presents previously unpublished letters from the Walters family's collection held by the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum, which include the exchange of correspondence between the home front and front line, a perspective not often seen. Between Home and the Front gives us a glimpse into the poignant questions, answers, and sentiments Private David Walters of the 5th Indiana Calvary and his wife Rachel shared in their correspondence. The letters from David give details about some of the lesser-known actions of the western theater of combat, such as Morgan's Raid. The letters by Rachel Walters record how she managed the household and a young child while becoming hub of communication for the family, often receiving missives from David's brothers, Isaac and John Wesley, both of whom served with Indiana units, and relaying the information to others. From the early letters describing a Civil War soldier's enlistment to his widow's struggle in the aftermath of the war, the letters of the Walters family add incomparable details to the study of the Civil War. Between Home and the Front offers not only unique first-person accounts from those that experienced the Civil War but also meticulous annotations that provide valuable historical context for the events, people, and material culture described in the letters.
